Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Estimates (9/8-9)
Weekend Results:
'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' sold 604,090 admissions to gross ¥804,270,350 ($10.3 million) over the weekend. As since Friday, it's total is 800,000 admissions (no actual number yet) and ¥1.05 billion ($13.4 million).
Excellent results that should allow it to reach ¥6 billion ($75 million) or more.

'Umizaru: Brave Hearts' breaks ¥7 billion ($90 million) after nine weeks in release.
'Wolf Children' will soon surpass ¥4 billion ($51 million), making it the only non-brand animated film to ever achieve that accomplishment.
'The Avengers' enters the Top 10 after four weeks in release.
"Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' exceeded ¥1 billion after just 3 days, and will be soaring up the charts all month long when it enters the Top 3 and will probably settle for #2 behind 'Umizaru: Brave Hearts'.

Hi Corpse, any way of finding out the release date for Cobra? When it opened, it set the all-time WB opening record. Just wondered when exactly it opened. Thanks

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Charts Updated
Sept. 15-16 Weekend Forecast
1 (-) Resident Evil V: Retribution (Sony) ¥600 million ($7.6 million), NEW 2 (1) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥550 million ($7 million), Week 2 3 (-) Insight into the Universe (TOEI) ¥250 million ($3.2 million), NEW 4 (2) Rurouni Kenshin (Warner Bros.) ¥190 million ($2.4 million), Week 4 5 (3) Dearest (Toho) ¥125 million ($1.6 million), Week 4 6 (4) The Avengers (Disney) ¥100 million ($1.3 million), Week 5 7 (-) Mirror Mirror (Gaga) ¥90 million ($1.2 million), NEW 8 (5) Prometheus (FOX) ¥65 million ($800,000), Week 4 9 (7) Dreams for Sale (Asmik Ace) ¥60 million ($750,000), Week 2 10 (9) The Intouchables (Gaga) ¥50 million ($650,000), Week 3
After last weekend's rough drops, this weekend should be very healthy. Monday is also a National Holiday, which will give the box office an additional boost.
The top spot will be pretty close between 'Resident Evil V' and 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL'. It's unlikely 'REV' matches 'REIV''s opening and final total (released during the height of 3D), but the franchise is strong and the latest film probably won't drop too much from it's predecessor. I think 'Bayside' will win the weekend in admissions, but 3D will put 'REV' over-the-top in gross. 'REV's opening weekend prediction, and also 'Mirror Mirror's, excludes what they make today (Friday).
'Finding Nemo 3D' will likely miss debuting in the Top 10 despite the popularity of the original film. Re-releases have always failed in the market, and 3D re-releases haven't been performing any better. Both Star Wars 3D and Titanic 3D disappointed this year, as well as all the Disney 3D releases. As far as I know, at least since 1980, no re-release has ever been a commercial success (1 billion yen earner) in the market.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Forecast (9/15-16)
Some rate Friday data was released this afternoon:
'Resident Evil V: Retribution' sold 75% of the tickets 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' did opening day last Friday. 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' is down an impressive 30% compared to it's opening day last Friday.
This data puts the two films very close going into the weekend with approx. 145,000 admissions for 'REV' and 135,000 admissions for 'BS4' for Friday. 3D ticket prices, and how many diehard Resident Evil fans turned out before the weekend will determine the outcome.
Also of note, 'The Intouchables' saw a huge 65% increase over last Friday. I read it was adding a few more screens this weekend (rare for any film in the market given the high volume of films released every weekend) so I'm sure that played a major role. This data suggests the film may increase in it's third weekend.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Forecast (9/15-16)
To show just how big Toho is this year, here is the list of the Top 7 Distributors in NA and where Toho ranks.
Jan-Sept. 13 1. Warner Bros. - $1,237.8 2. Sony / Columbia - $1,191.1 3. Buena Vista - $1,131.9 4. Universal - $1,120.7 5. Lionsgate - $756.5 6. 20th Century Fox - $748.2 7. Toho - $697.2 (as of Aug. 31) 8. Paramount - $587.6
If up to Sept. 13th was incluced in Toho's total, they'd probably be ahead of FOX and Lionsgate since Bayside Shakedown's first 7 days and their holdovers would be included.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Estimates (9/15-16)
Sept. 15-16 Weekend Estimates
1 (-) Resident Evil V: Retribution (Sony) ¥640 million ($8.1 million), 0, NEW 2 (1) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥595 million ($7.6 million), -25%, Week 2 3 (-) Insight into the Universe (TOEI) ¥191 million ($2.4 million), 0, NEW 4 (2) Rurouni Kenshin (Warner.) ¥156 million ($2 million), -38%, Week 4 5 (3) Dearest (Toho) ¥98 million ($1.3 million), -35%, Week 4 6 (4) The Avengers (Disney) ¥92 million ($1.2 million), -34%, Week 5 7 (9) The Intouchables (Gaga) ¥69 million ($880,000), -14%, Week 3 8 (-) Key of Life (Clockworks) ¥63 million ($805,000), 0, NEW 9 (5) Prometheus (FOX) ¥55 million ($705,000), -43%, Week 4 10 (10) The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki (Toho) ¥46 million ($580,000), -27%, Week 9
'Resident Evil: Retribution's' estimate is using the same 3D share 'The Avengers' had opening weekend. If the 3D share is lower, then 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' may have repeated at No.1 because it won the weekend in admissions with about 445,000 vs. 'Resident Evil: Retribution' at 415,000. Either way, strong start for 'Resident Evil: Retribution', just off from it's predecessor by 10% or so if estimates hold. It'll probably beat it's US total this time in Japan.
And that's a great second weekend hold for 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL'. If the estimate holds, it's the biggest second weekend of the year. After 10 days, it should definitely be over ¥2 billion ($25-27 million) already.
Good debut for 'Insight into the Universe'. It looks like TOEI finally has a non-Kamen Rider hit live-action film this year.
Once again an excellent weekend for 'The Intouchables'. It's difficult to project limited releases, especially ones with incredible WOM like this one, but it's safe to say it has a long run ahead of it.
'Mirror Mirror' comes in just shy of the Top 10 in a very disappointing debut of ¥45 million ($575,000) with estimates. It's possible it edged 'Wolf Children' out of the Top 10 since they're nearly tied, but still very disappointing. No data for 'Finding Nemo 3D', but not unexpected because it's chances at opening in the Top 10 were extremely low anyway.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Estimates (9/15-16)
It did on Friday, but doesn't look like it for the weekend. Still though, it's only playing on 48 (last I checked) screens and has been in the Top 10 for three-consecutive weekends now (rising in rank this weekend). On opening weekend it sold out around 2/3 of it's showtimes and has been staying pretty close to that number since. It's incredible for a non-English, foreign-language film.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Estimates (9/15-16)
Sept. 15-16 Weekend Cinema Rankings
Toho 1. Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) Week 2 2. Resident Evil: Retribution (Sony) NEW 3. The Intouchables (Gaga) Week 3 4. Rurouni Kenshin (Warner.) Week 4 5. Insight into the Universe (TOEI) NEW 6. The Avengers (Disney) Week 5 7. Dearest (Toho) Week 4 8. Key of Life (Clockworks) NEW 9. Prometheus (FOX) Week 4 10. Safe House (Toho-Towa) Week 2
29 of 'The Intouchables' 48 screens are at Toho locations, explaining why it ranks so high every week here. A third place ranking in it's third week however is still incredibly strong and means it's selling out at least half of it's showtimes every day.
Warner, United, Shochiku, Sunshine will be posted later followed by a recap.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Estimates (9/15-16)
Yesterday's Holiday has delayed the box office results. But in other news, the Doraemon franchise has achieved a great accomplishment. Not only did this year's film become the highest grossing, and most attended film in the franchise, but also.... The Doraemon film franchise hit 97.49 million admissions this year. That makes it the second most attended film franchise in Japan Box Office History, behind only Godzilla with 99.25 million admissions. Doraemon was first introduced in Japan in 1970 in the form of a manga, which spawned an anime in 1973. Since then, the anime is still on-going with nearly 2,000 episodes and 32 theatrical releases. http://zasshi.news.yahoo.co.jp/article? ... yboyz-sociNext year the film franchise will reach 100 million admissions.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Estimates (9/15-16)
'The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki' broke through the ¥4 billion ($51 million) milestone on Monday, 59 days after opening on July 21st.http://mantan-web.jp/2012/09/18/2012091 ... 6000c.htmlIt's a exceptional achievement by being the first non-brand, original animated film to ever reach the milestone. Director Mamoru Hosoda's previous film, 'Summer Wars', grossed ¥1.65 billion ($20 million) in 2009.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Estimates (9/15-16)
Sept. 15-16 Weekend Ranking
1 (1) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) Week 2 2 (-) Resident Evil: Retribution (Sony) NEW 3 (2) Rurouni Kenshin (Warner Bros.) Week 4 4 (-) Insight into the Universe (TOEI) NEW 5 (3) Dearest (Toho) Week 4 6 (-) Key of Life (Clockworks) NEW 7 (4) The Avengers (Disney) Week 5 8 (-) Mirror Mirror (Gaga) NEW 9 (9) The Intouchables (Gaga) Week 3 10 (8) Akko-chan: The Movie (Shochiku) Week 3
'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' held off 'Resident Evil' in it's second weekend in admissions, but fell to second in gross. After 11 days (including Monday), the film has already exceeded 2 million admissions and ¥2.5 billion ($32 million). ¥6 billion ($75 million) becomes easier to reach, and maybe ¥7 billion ($90 million) could still be in play.
'Resident Evil: Retribution' opened on 779 screens and grossed ¥676,992,500 ($8.6 million) on 433,938 admissions over the weekend. And since Friday, it's four day total reached a very impressive ¥1,248,816,000 ($15.8 million) on 820,085 admissions. When compared to it's predecessor, it retained 85% of it's four day total. It should easily achieve ¥4 billion ($50 million) and become the second biggest Hollywood film of the year.
'Insight into the Universe' debuted to ¥138,213,900 on 116,431 admissions on 329 screens over the weekend. That's a very low avg. ticket price for an opening weekend, which indicates the film has strong female appeal (70, or 80%) and will thrive more on the weekdays.
'Mirror Mirror' did manage a Top 10 debut afterall. Playing on 191 screens, it grossed ¥66,158,600 ($830,000) on 51,233 admissions for the weekend. Since it's opening on Friday, it's grossed ¥85,366,300 ($1.1 million) on 68,151 admissions.

'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' climbs 35 spots in just seven days (the largest gain of the year). It'll likely reach the Top 5 after this coming weekend.
'Wolf Children' was just shy of 4 billion on Sunday, but hit the mark on Monday. As I mentioned before, it's the first non-brand animated film to ever achieve the milestone.
'Rurouni Kenshin' becomes the #1 film for Warner Bros. this year, topping 'Dark Shadows', 'Sherlock Holmes', and 'The Dark Knight Rises'.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Charts Updated
Sept. 22-23 Weekend Forecast
1 (2) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥450 million ($5.7 million) Week 3 2 (1) Resident Evil: Retribution (Sony) ¥400 million ($5.1 million) Week 2 3 (-) Tiger & Bunny The Movie (Shochiku/T-Joy) ¥150 million ($1.9 million) NEW 4 (3) Rurouni Kenshin (Warner Bros.) ¥120 million ($1.5 million) Week 5 5 (4) Insight into the Universe (Shochiku) ¥100 million ($1.3 million) Week 2 6 (5) Dearest (Toho) ¥70 million ($900,000) Week 5 7 (9) The Intouchables (Gaga) ¥65 million ($825,000) Week 4 8 (6) The Avengers (Disney) ¥55 million ($700,000) Week 6 9 (7) Key of Life (Klockworx) ¥50 million ($650,000) Week 2 10 (-) Rock of Ages (Warner Bros.) ¥40 million ($500,000) NEW
'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' will likely return to the top and could stay there until late October.
'Tiger & Bunny' is a little tricky to pinpoint because while it has a small screen count, it's going to sellout many showtimes due to the fan-base. It's probably going to have a similar PSA as 'Gintama' or 'Lyrical Nanoha'. I know last July it was reported it sold 42,000 tickets in advance.
One might think 'Rock of Ages' would do much better but Warner Bros. isn't even releasing in in 100 theaters. A debut outside the Top 10 wouldn't be surprising either.
Projected Totals after Sunday (¥1 billion+):
'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' ~¥3.7 billion ($47 million) after 17 days. 'The Avengers' ~¥3.5 billion ($45 million) after 41 days. 'Rurouni Kenshin' ~¥2.7 billion ($34 million) after 30 days. 'Resident Evil: Retribution' ~¥2.1 billion ($27 million) after 10 days. 'Dearest' ~¥1.9 billion ($24 million) after 30 days.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Forecast (9/22-23)
Sept. 22-23 Weekend Estimates
1 (1) Resident Evil: Retribution (Sony) ¥470 million ($6 million), -31%, Week 2 2 (2) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) ¥410 million ($5.2 million), -36%, Week 3 3 (3) Rurouni Kenshin (Warner Bros.) ¥110 million ($1.4 million), -34%, Week 5 4 (4) Insight into the Universe (Shochiku) ¥80 million ($1.1 million), -44%, Week 2 5 (6) Dearest (Toho) ¥60 million ($750,000), -45%, Week 5 6 (7) Key of Life (Klockworx) ¥55 million ($700,000), -24%, Week 2 7 (9) The Intouchables (Gaga) ¥50 million ($650,000), -21%, Week 4 8 (6) The Avengers (Disney) ¥45 million ($600,000), -46%, Week 6 9 (8) Mirror Mirror (Gaga) ¥40 million ($500,000), -34%, Week 2 10 (-) Rock of Ages (Warner Bros.) ¥40 million ($500,000), 0, NEW
Excellent second weekend hold for 'Resident Evil 5'. If the estimate holds, it's about 10% better than it's predecessor's second weekend drop and bigger in gross as well. I suppose it's around ¥2.2 billion ($28 million) now and will likely surpass it's NA total by next weekend as it aims for over ¥4 billion ($50 million).
'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' dips slightly more than expected, though it's three week total probably exceeded ¥3.5 billion ($45 million).
'The Intouchables' has the best hold in the Top 10 again. The lack of any major openers also propels it up the rankings, too. It's definitely exceeded ¥500 million ($6.5 million) by now.
No data is available for 'Tiger & Bunny', so the Top 10 Ranking could change a bit depending on where it lands. I didn't pay much attention to the box office this weekend, however I didn't see as many sellouts as I was expecting for it

Re: Japan Box Office (2012) Weekend Estimates (9/22-23)
Sept. 22-23 Weekend Ranking1 (1) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) Week 3 2 (2) Resident Evil: Retribution (Sony) Week 2 3 (4) Insight into the Universe (Shochiku) Week 2 4 (3) Rurouni Kenshin (Toho) Week 5 5 (-) Tiger & Bunny The Movie (Shochiku/T-Joy) NEW6 (9) The Intouchables (Gaga) Week 4 7 (5) Dearest (Toho) Week 5 8 (6) Key of Life (Klockworx) Week 2 9 (8) Mirror Mirror (Gaga) Week 2 10 (7) The Avengers (Disney) Week 6 Interesting weekend. None of the films in the Top 5 rank the same in admissions and gross. Above is the admissions ranking. Here is the gross ranking: 1 (1) Resident Evil: Retribution (Sony) Week 2 2 (2) Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL (Toho) Week 3 3 (-) Tiger & Bunny The Movie (Shochiku/T-Joy) NEW4 (3) Rurouni Kenshin (Warner Bros.) Week 5 5 (4) Insight into the Universe (Shochiku) Week 2 'Resident Evil 5' exceeded ¥2 billion ($25 million) after 10 days. The actual figure is closer to ¥2.2 billion ($28 milion), though. 'Bayside Shakedown THE FINAL' exceeded 2.5 million admissions and ¥3.5 billion ($45 million) after 17 days. 'Tiger & Bunny' grossed ¥117,650,000 ($1.5 million) over the weekend on 74,143 admissions on just 70 screens. That's a very high avg. ticket price of about ¥1,587 ($21), even a bit higher than 3D releases. This was mainly due to the first day live world premiere on Saturday where tickets went for ¥9,240 ($118!)! 30% of the weekend total came from that single world premiere showing alone on Saturday. 95% viewers at the world premiere showing were female. Fans can be crazy sometimes.
