 Stupid Cigarette Laws
Ok i don't smoke; i did it when i was like 13 because i was stupid[er] and it was all...cool. When i resigned to being a massiv geek i decided to kick it and never had to sneak fags again.
But today my buds and i were down town and he had forgotten his college ID card; and the frigid bitches in McConnel weren't for serving him his cigarettes [hes 17; so hes legal]. So i was like; right ok dude I'll get them for you [because i look older than i am] and went to ask for some and they were like "thats his friend sent in to do his dirty work" and i was like "listen hes over 16 its perfectly legal for him to smoke" and they were giving it the "Can we see some ID please" i was like sure and flipped out my wallet.
I showed them 3 seperate ID cards all with the same stats on them, one a student id, the other a buss pass and the final one a membership card.
The po-faced bizatch at the counter checked a "list" and turned to me and said "No; im not serving you - we need to see one of the four selected forms of ID accepted by trading standards"
I was like.......what seriously now.
I had this massiv argument with these old prudefaces in the middle of the shop and it was ugly ; but i feel like its totally discriminative that we are legal and because we look younger [and are on the younger spectrum of legal smokers] that we have to show identification to ridiculously stringent rules?
Has anyone else had these checks on the incredibly stupid "4-card" scheme?
Today was my first time - i used to buy cigarettes for my big sister when i was 16, and have been served vodka bottles when ive been blitered at 14 so im pretty shocked and find getting IDed really unfair.
Do old people have to show old people id to get shortbread? No damnit.

Hahahaha. You DO smoke!
We'll see how I do in these pubs when I enter Kanada. I could pass for 18 (the drinking age in Toronto, no?) with my glasses on. Maybe even without them on. I dunno.

I have had sorta the same problem.
I have gone into a store to buy both myself and gf or friend a pack of cigs....we smoke different brands and the person at the counter has actually told me that she cannot sell me to kinds of cigs unless the person in the car comes in and shows their I.D. Of course we are all over 18(the age to smoke in the states) so it wasnt a problem...just a pain in the ass.
I have had to show more than one form of I.D. before as well...and Im almost 21

That's uber retarded. What if you were experimenting with different brands?
Unless a cashier makes you light up in front of his or her eyes, there's no real fair way to impose the "have the other person come in" laws.
I don't smoke, though, so I don't have to worry about it.

Smoking has long been linked to Breast Cancer ... now they linked second hand smoke prominatly to breast cancer ... won't be long till the rules get even worse.

The state ID laws have a standardized list for a reason. There are so many cards for so many clubs, video stores, etc, that the government can't keep track. The ID's you showed are very easy to fake.
Old people don't have to show ID, but they can be asked to prove their age at any time. I was carded at Target (of all places) when I tried to buy Diablo 2 (and I was 29).
I've never been subjected to the four-card system for buying cigarettes. But I HAVE gone through the DMV, the Social Security Office, the Department of State, the INS, and the Passport Agency and believe me, when it comes to having proper documents, you got off easy.

Sounds like the clerks did the right thing to me. The fines for selling tobacco to a minor are hefty, and some empoyers will automatically fire an employee with no exception. In my area we frequently do alcohol and tobacco stings where we send in an underage decoy to try to purchase.
So, knowing the laws and risks... if I were a clerk I wouldn't sell to anybody who didn't look over 30 and didn't have proper form of ID (school ID's and buss passes are worthless). So, cut the poor bastards some slack and and bring proper ID next time!

I imagine there is more to this story... never heard of a 4 ID system. It must be 4 ID's are required if you do not have a driver's license, or government issued ID. If that is the case, that's a generous policy as I wouldn't recommend to any clerk to sell to someone who doesn't look over 30 without a proper form of ID - no matter how many other secondary ID's they have. Secondary ID's such as school, bus, video rental, etc... are far too easy to fake.

ontario has always pissed me off.
do you know they dont accept a medicare card from any other place outside of ontario?!?!? they want a freaking driver's license. What if you dont freaking drive. A medicare is carried by everyone and is government sanctioned! when we were all in toronto and a few of my friends had trouble getting in, i looked the guy in the face and asked him "exactly what the hell are they suppose to do". hes like its always a good practice to carry ones passport. I guess he said that cause my friends are immigrants. I looked back at him and said, "you've got to be kidding me. You're telling me you go to Quebec or Manitoba with your passport everytime you travel there for a weekend.?" he had no answer.
Ontario pisses me off over that. Its not even like they have a secondary ID system. what is a person to do if they dont have a driver's license!?!? hell, you're showing them a govt sanctioned ID card, not some university card (which by the way is also accepted in Quebec)

The Govt won't issue ID cards? If you don't have a driver's license here, you can get an ID card, which looks exactly the same but you just can't drive with it.
If they don't issue ID cards, then that is stupid.

Umm no .. not really.
I have the following cards.
I have an SIN card (social insurance number) but it has no picture nor anything more than a number really.
I have my medicare.
I have my driver's license
Credit card
Interac Card (debit card)
My work medical card
Air Canada Aeroplan card
EB Games card
1000000 comix card
and the card given to me by my girlfriend certifying me as a chick magnet.
Nothing more.
other than the medicare and the license, nothing else is govt given.
I can use a bank card with another picture (not so important ) ID to get into some places
Medicare and License are my only 2 photo cards. I used to have a university card that i could use with another non picture card before. The rest are all useless. I tried to use the EB Games card once but was promptly thrown out : )

Its not four ids; its youve got to have one of four approved IDS by Trading standards here in UK; each of which cost a substantial amount.
Its ridiculous; i dont approve of smoking but i find it insulting that i have maybe 5 different forms of valid and acceptable ID and that trading standards are telling people its not acceptable to use it as ID.
