Puck's LA restaurants are supremely overrated. I'll take Maestro's over Cut, and have zero desire to revisit Spago or Chinois.

Michel Richard is teh shit. I was disappointed that his Tysons project didn't work out.

Also: did you know Jose Andres is like the fucking 'it' chef right now?? He has a huge theme restaurant called Bazaar in LA ...now in Miami too. And there's both a Jaleo and Minibar concept in Vegas (for that matter, there's also a central in Vegas). Bazaar is pretty good. I've been there twice. Sick of people talking about molecular gastronomy.

Unless his Cali CUT isn't as good as his Vegas CUT... this is the most INSANE thing I have ever read. CUT in Vegas is the greatest steak I have ever eaten in my life.

You hate Chipotle? I would eat there every day if that was sensible fiscally or nutritionally.

Yes. This. Chipotle is LIFE.

Just to close off on the In N' Out, I order the Double Doubles with both caramel onions and a slice of raw onion, but no mustard.
I wish they would offer chili or three pepper jack cheese, or bacon. Or guacamole. Or ranch.
And more salt on the burger as it grills.

And whatever happened to the once-great Bob's Big Boy? Maybe it was the franchise that I last stopped at in 2010, but all I got was a sour pickle on a storebought-quality burger, and I think I could have done better by buying from the store.

Do they still make the great Big Boy, or did they screw it by going PC?

i'm somewhere in between. i don't hate chipotle, but i don't understand obsession with it... it's just a burrito place. cool concept, 'meh' food. pretty much any real mexican place (or even a cheesy tex-mex place like austin grill) can replicate the dishes favorably

we used to always go to chipotle in high school, so i'm tired of it. doesn't help that my local one is on the salty side and that some of my coworkers are just like you guys -- obsessed/ always want to eat there. i don't understand how a $6 burrito can make someone so content

that said, if i'm stuck late and need to grab food from a chain, i go to chipotle over subway. subway is fucking disgusting

maestro's in b. hills is a short walk away from CUT, so the comparison is inevitable. they're both excellent. but maestro's is less sceney, more pleasant atmosphere-wise (CUT is in a ritzy tourist attraction -- the 'pretty woman' hotel...and it's a puck restaurant, so it pretty much has the worst patrons ever) -- and costs a lot less.

don't know if other maestro's are as good.

probably the best place to get a quick breakfast in the morning in the city. outside of that, completely useless.

to torri: What's with the Zaytinya hate? I mean, I admit its a tad bit overrated but its quality stuff (and very convenient to go to for me).

Also, Citronelle is apparently shut down cause of water damage or something. Never had it

don't hate zaytinya at all, just starting to hate andres' fame. he used to be 'our' chef, but now every self-professed foodie talks about how much they look forward to eating at his restaurants because he apprenticed at el bulli and his food is bizarre and colorful and whatever. i do think he's hit a level of celebrite where he's probably too concerned about his brand. this may be an LA thing since bazaar is pretty new and acclaimed, so brings in a lot of undesirables. maybe his dc following is the same as it's always been. anyway, didn't really want to go to zaytinya because i've been there several times and there's other places to check out :)

and this isn't to say that the 'undesirables' (specifically: 'foodies' and shitty yelp people) ruin food. but they impact the dialogue about food and this, in turn, changes the crowd, creates new demands for the restaurant and/ or chef, and can make dining a whole lot less entertaining or personal

Me! I don't always have time to cook but I love to, last week I made a pasta with a recipe I copied from a restaurant...fried garlic, basil, olive oil, goat cheese and diced tomatoes.

Me too.

Pasta dishes and omelettes in all different variations is what I'm best at, though I keep expanding my horizon. Actually cooked rabbit for the first time a few months back.

There is nothing that goes above a fresh, self-made spaghetti bolognese or different types of casserole. I use recipes half of the time, improvise the other half.

Mind you, I don't cook every day, not even every other day. For that I lack the time and the motivation. Also, often it is hard to motivate myself to cook just for myself. It is hard to make just a small one-person sized portion and I don't like eating the same thing two days in a row. Now I can usually cook for two, so that's fine. Also...I don't have a dishwasher so doing the dishes is another thing that prevents me from cooking more often, hehe.

But the other night I improvised an interesting southern French chicken/veggies pan with chicken, onions, garlic, red and green bell peppers, carrots, red chili, fresh herbs (basil, fennel, thyme, savory) in a self-made red-wine sauce and rice on the side. That was delicious.

Oh and the rabbit I made a while back (I usually don't take photos of the stuff that I cook, but this thing took me well over four hours, so...)

I cook for myself almost every night. Usually nothing special, a lot of pasta, and some kind of meat. The only time I make something worth my time is if i cook for someone... which rarely happens. But I love cooking.

Thankfully I don't live in the US, I'd be a whale with all the burgers and buffalo wings and such.

Here in Oz, its Nandos all the way. Love it. Spicy hot grilled Portugese chicken - the ultimate.

Best $12 burger at the Burger Stop of Anchorage, fries are mediocre there though. Best fries are at the Glacier Brew House, but I don't go there for the fries. Anchorage, unfortunately, does not have any of the restaurants mentioned, well we do have subway.

I'm very good at it, natural skill, but I don't have the patience when it comes to food to cook anything of myself.

Nando's is great. Its soooo addictive and certainly healthier than the majority of fast foods.

I friend of mine was a Director at Nandos over a decade ago and I recall a bunch of us lobbying him to open a store nearby, which he did. Now they are everywhere.

When I was in the US a few years ago I even thought of perhaps looking into opening a Nando's store over there, it certainly would do well.

Well, I made a cherry pie and wanted to bake it this morning but ran out time since I had to be at work. I had to stick the dang thing in the freezer. Ugh.

As for my pie, I used cherries that I pitted and washed. Two frozen pie crusts. Then the flour, sugar, butter, and almond extract. I should have got up earlier dammit!
