Based on it's midweek sales, I'm very surprised Magic Mike lost that many theaters. I would have thought they'd at least split some screens to keep a few night shows.

And that is a pretty ridiculous theater count for Hope Springs. I think it has enough interest to open wider than that.

Julie and Julia was in that same situation (only 2,354 theaters) but didn't have a problem grossing over $90M.
Also, Magic Mike at most theaters had it on no more than 2 screens right before theater owners interlocked showtimes.

Julie & Julia only debuted in 2,354 theaters (never going wider than 2,528), so I think we'll see a similar count here. It's the same studio.

Good count for Campaign. Can't see this opening less than $30M.

That estimate alone makes The Bourne Legacy Universal's 10th-widest ever opening.

It's weird that Universal is the only major studio that has never opened a movie in 4,000 theatres or more. Hell, they have yet to open a movie in 3,800 theatres! The next Fast & Furious film should manage that, though.

I don't think Hope Springs can match that films PTA though. J&J had the true story angle and potential award buzz for the performances.

Hope Springs does have more notable co-stars, though, with Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell.

You said that there's interest but you don't believe it will do well, SolC9?

I think there is enough interest to open the film wider than 2200 theaters, and I felt the same for Julie & Julia, but I don't think Hope Springs has as much initial buzz as J&J, so I don't think it's PTA OW will be as good.

MTC/RS and Fandango 5 will tell the real truth about Hope Springs next Monday.

Hope Springs also has the benefit of what has been a very empty summer for adult women. Julie & Julia was coming off two big hits catering to women (The Proposal and The Ugly Truth) and faced direct competition for the same audience in week 2 with The Time Traveler's Wife.

I agree it won't have nearly as high a PTA, though, especially with a Wednesday opening. I'm guessing a $16-17M 3-day opening at the moment.
