Wasn't there a lot of a spillover that Monday?

As I said before the 4-day total is now behind TDK's 4-day haul. I think in the process of recovering TDKR just lost a potential of its audience that would have had otherwise seen it because of the positive marketing.

This puts into perspective of $450m though it is too early to say it won't cross that mark but as of now it is not guaranteed unless it pulls a miraculous (I didn't say $100m :P ) number over second weekend.

It's too bad if it doesn't hit 500 million. I was hoping for Dead Man's Chest caliber legs.

Its OW minus midnights will be able to match DMC legs. So that gives it about 450m as Jack alluded too.

Why should we drop the midnight admissions, though? I'm sure many people saw Pirates at midnight, too.

Not sure how reasonable it is to assume those type of legs when DMC had a strong family demo, and TDKR's family demo has been hurt hard by events. This is all just rationalizing and bargaining until we see something positive. Increased Tuesday effect of the last two years is the ony positive I can spin at the moment.

I am really curious to see how the other movies are doing.

It was before the midnight explosion,

All right, if you say so.

Too complex for me, I s'pose. Dead Man's Chest opened to 164 million adjusted and finished with 511 million, and I was hoping The Dark Knight Rises could have a similar run after its 160 million dollar start. But I s'pose it's doomed to a less impressive run, is what everyone is saying.

Media coverage of the shooting is still downright obsessive. Yesterday they got their first glimpse at the shooter in court, so they made a huge deal about that. Every little detail of his life that gets revealed receives a ton of coverage as well. I was in an airport yesterday afternoon and all the TV's had constant coverage of the shooting. I think this film, even without the shooting, was destined to have weaker weekday holds than TDK since it's 12 minutes longer. At nearly 3 hours, working adults simply don't have the time to watch it during the week. Should help the weekend hold though.

There have also been further revelations, such as the Batman poster and costume in his apartment. The media will emphasize those discoveries, and it will be cemented even more as the "Batman massacre" instead of the film on the screen just being random.

It made $9m from midnights and $46m during the day while this movie did approximately the same during the day on 3 times as much from midnights.

I will take TDKR's BO downtime for this week at the most but if we just keep on saying that the legs were also impacted by the shooting (specially after this week) then I disagree. It did loose a lot of potential about $20m-$30m OW which would translate to $60m-$70m total and that is a HUGE amount, but if doesn't cross $500m then there is a big disappointment tragedy or not.

As long as the media continues obsessing over it, then it's a valid issue. Yesterday had a crazy amount of media coverage. Might as well have been the day of the shooting with how much they were talking about it. My immediate reaction on Friday morning was that this could end up sub-$350m. I'd be happy with $400m, especially since it seems to be kicking TDK's ass in foreign markets. Could end up making more money worldwide than TDK even with "only" $400m domestic.

True should have said something about $400m at this point but I still don't see how it misses $400m with these (relatively) huge weekdays.

Maine police: Batman ‘copycat’ suspect planned to shoot employer

The suspect in an unusual traffic stop Sunday night in Maine seems to have been influenced by last weekend’s horrific shootings in Colorado, in the fourth arrest connected to showings of “The Dark Knight Rises,” the movie at which the shootings took place.

That same evening, authorities in Los Angeles arrested a 52-year-old man attending the film after he shouted “Does anyone have a gun?” and “I should go off like in Colorado,” while customers evacuated a movie complex in Pennsylvania after someone yelled “Bomb!” following fights in a bathroom and a VIP seating section. And a 26-year-old homeless man was arrested for disrupting a showing in Sierra Visa, Ariz.

As WCSH-TV reported Tuesday, Timothy Courtois was pulled over Sunday night for driving at 112 miles an hour on the Maine Turnpike, in a black Ford Mustang he allegedly bought after watching the film and planned to modify so that it could outrun authorities.

Courtois told state police he was driving to Derry, N.H., to shoot a former employer. Police found four handguns, several boxes of ammunition, and an AK-47 assault rifle inside the car, an arsenal allegedly similar to the one Aurora shooting suspect James Eagan Holmes had at the time of the massacre last Friday that left 12 people dead and 58 others wounded.

The Portland Press Herald reported that a subsequent search of his apartment produced more boxes of ammunition and more weapons, including a fully automatic machine gun, with a scope and tripod. Save for the machine gun, all the other guns in the home were obtained legally.

Courtois also said he had attended the film with a loaded gun in his backpack. A spokesperson for the theater told WCSH they could not confirm that allegation, and that it generally does not allow people to enter with backpacks.

I fucking can't at these people. :(

Its legs won't come close to TDK. Forget about $500M and probably $450M too.

For those who think the film isn't getting blamed by the media and public, here is a lawsuit against WB by someone who was in the theater and didn't get shot:

http://www.tmz.com/2012/07/24/james-hol ... -shooting/

Fact is that this was a nuclear bomb against the film. No one wanted to accept it, but that's the truth. Only saving grace is the film seems to have good WOM. Otherwise it would be headed for a sub-350 total.

All of this must be part of Disney's plan to ensure TDKR doesn't beat Avengers.

OMG I'm so cruel and insane to think that!!!!11

I also thought that when I first read about the shooting, I'm ashamed of myself.

Yeah go for it man, blame WB. He might as well blame Tom Hardy and Nolan.

How about he blame the fact that GUNS ARE FUCKING LEGAL IN THE USA.

LOL

To be serious I think even with a proper opening legs would not have allowed it to get past 600 million.
