I never go up in theatres with stadium seating. I always turn the other way. How can you watch a Michael Bay film or a Bourne (assuming, arguendo, that you wanted to waste money) film from that close? I think I would be ill with neck pain and the lack of screen comprehension due to quick cuts viewed too closely. Do you also sit like two feet from your television?

Re: Saving Seats at a Movie Theater: What's Your Stance?
I had to watch Avengers for the first time from the far-right of the second row. Wasn't expecting the 10:50pm showing to be sold out so I didn't arrive early. Definitely not very comfortable.
I'm fine with saving seats.

It feels...immerses me more in the experience. And I don't feel any pain. It's different from watching a television. I don't need to justify myself, lol. It's just my preference.

Re: Saving Seats at a Movie Theater: What's Your Stance?
Happened again today. Five people were in front of me and suddenly 25 people were. Granted this was a showing that sold out a week ago and doesn't really happen outside of tentpole movies, but I would have liked a "hey, my friends are joining me later, just wanted to let you know" would have sufficed.

Re: Saving Seats at a Movie Theater: What's Your Stance?
I used to hate assigned/allocated seating but have come to enjoy it. You buy your tickets in advance, select the seats you want and then you don't have to worry about anything. Just turn up in time for the trailers or movie if you like to cut it fine.
Sometimes people take a chance and take the seat anyway, you just look at them and then look at the ticket and tell them they are in your seat. They always get out. Some even get out once they see you approach.
Much better system.
Magnus, late comers usually take the crappy seats so no issue there. Sellouts still occur.
Sometimes though the allocated seating can be silly. I recall seeing an 11pm session of 8 Mile and we had seats in the centre of the theater. There were probably only about 20 people in the theater and all had seats allocated in the same few rows as us. So we ended up moving down a few rows to have some space.
In terms of where to sit - pending the theater I dont mind sitting in the front from say 5 or 6 rows back.
Worst experience ever was in the first row for Speed and on the side in the second row for FOTR. Otherwise middle is best.

An attendant at the theater today announced to the crowd to not save more than one seat per person. Which is reasonable for a sold out showing, IMO.

Where seats are assigned, is it like sporting events? Meaning:
1) Better seats cost more; and 2) Once everyone can see that there will be no sellout, everyone moves to a better spot?
If seats do cost more, I am not sure I would prefer assigned seating because 95% of the time I get the seat I want.

Re: Saving Seats at a Movie Theater: What's Your Stance?
No issues with saving seats. It's obviously frustrating if you can't find a seat and are subjected to sitting in the front, but what can ya do? If you're late, you're late. Or if people showed up a lot earlier than you did because they wanted good seats, tough luck. I do agree that there shouldn't be like one person saving 10 seats. That's absurd. Leave articles of clothing or have multiple people saving that many seats. I've never seen any issues with this, in general.
For TDKR on Thursday, I got to the theater at like 11:40pm (kinda late) and my showing was already packed. Only the first row open. But it was playing in like almost all the screens, so I theater hopped until I found the best option. No big deal.

I was wondering, how does saving seats work? The people coming into the theater, how do they know that a certain seat is reserved?

The Bat wonders who are these people going to the movies in groups of 15 and expecting to sit together. It's a goddamn movie, you're not going to be talking to each other, so you definitely don't need the entire fucking row.

If seats do cost more, I am not sure I would prefer assigned seating because 95% of the time I get the seat I want. Indeed. The only time this is really an issue is for these big-event films like TDKR, Avengers, etc. No, all seats cost the same Caius. I never used to like this but these days it is much much better because I rarely can turn up and wait in line for half an hour. This way I walk in just as the movie starts. If its an empty session (say less than 30 people), its still assigned but you can pretty much sit where you like. I've had people sitting in my assigned seat during an empty session and have just let them stay there as ive found a better spot.

Re: Saving Seats at a Movie Theater: What's Your Stance?
When I saw Dark Knight Rises at midnight I asked the woman next to me to make sure no one gets my friend and my seats since we were going to the bathroom and she didn't have a problem with it.
I don't think there's any problem with saving seats but assigned seating really should be implemented at more theaters here. Waiting more than 4 hours in line for a movie is ridiculous.

In Russia better seats cost more (you still can seat there if they are empty). So-called "VIP" sections include middle rows and back row ("seats for kissing"), for about 50% of seats.

Re: Saving Seats at a Movie Theater: What's Your Stance?
I have no issue with saving seats, within reason. I get kinda miffed if I ever counter 1 person trying to save like 7 or 8 seats or something. But holding down the fort for 2-3-4-5 or so people is not a big deal to me.

Re: Saving Seats at a Movie Theater: What's Your Stance?
BTW - - kudos for standing up for your fellow theatregoers, Magnus! Magnus wrote: So I saw TDKR twice this past weekend and of course, both showings were sold-out. And in both instances, there was major issues that occurred with people saving seats. The first story is fairly long cause I intervened in it; the second not so much.
In the midnight show, I saw next two two guys who were saving two seats in-between them for their friends. My friend and I went to go sit in them and then backed away once those guys told us they were saving it. About 30 seconds later, this guy comes and just sits at those seats. The two guys tell him that they're saving it and he starts being an asshole and refusing to leave because he says there's no rule on saving seats. The two guys are somewhat intimated by this guy and don't really full on attack him, but I've seen assholes like this all the time so I just turn to him and say, "you're being a fucking asshole. Get up and leave and go down a row where there's plenty of seats." The guy still refused to leave. I told one of the friends to go get security so he did. The asshole guy still would't move. I told him that this situation wasn't going to work for him and that he was just going to end up with a shitty seat so he may as well move now and get a good seat while its available. The theater security comes and its this old woman. She tells the guy he needs to leave and the guy still refuses. He talks speaking in Urdu/Hindi (couldn't tell because they both sound alike to me) and I start laughing cause I understand every word he says and tell him, "oh cool bro, you're brown I can't understand anything you're saying." The guy shuts up at this point. I call him an asshole one more time before another security guard, this time a male security guard with a baton, comes. The asshole gets out of seat at this point, which is about a minute before the film starts. No idea where he saw the movie, but it was probably in a shitty spot as he deserved.

Re: Saving Seats at a Movie Theater: What's Your Stance?
Saving 2-3 seats is fine but when it gets over 4(unless its for a big mexican family), it becomes an issue. My problem is with saved seats reserved for nothing but for that same person having to put his clothes or his snacks placeholder but really calling security because the guy took a seat in a theater? . Plus in that situation, Magnus, where you said the group mentioned there were plenty of seats in the front end, they could have opted to move instead. Theres really no set rule on saving seats for theaters unless it says reserved on your ticket stub
