Everything was definitely effected by the shooting. I wouldn't think Moonrise Kingdom would drop 51% otherwise, or Ice Age would drop 56%.

BOM seems to at least be acknowledging it too - their gross is still the same, but it now says "(U.S.-Only)" in the title.

Horrible number but given massacre, its fine. Looking at a huge multiplier.

I'm interested in seeing how TDKR does on the weekdays, and then what it's second weekend hold is like.

Peace,
Mike

Very strong Sunday hold. -10.5% vs TDK's -8.5%. And TDKR didn't really have sellout spillover.

To be fair, even without Aurora, it had no chance of $200m, as expected.

Hopefully any damage Aurora did can be repaired over the next few days and weeks. Wisen up people. Don't let a nutcase change the way you live your lives.

I do expect this to cross $500m. I mean, if any part of its run was going to be majorly impacted, it's of course its opening weekend. I don't anticipate it free-falling from here - clearly, its daily pattern wasn't even that alarming. Pretty standard Saturday drop, and excellent Sunday hold. From now, I think it'll perform normally, but just from a much lower-than-expected opening. So 3.1 multiplier overall shouldn't be too hard.

How do people seem a couple days on from Aurora? Are people still buzzing about it?

As others have used really good analogies, if there was a shooting in a supermarket, would people stop buying food?

It doesn't make sense and really it has no relation to Batman whatsoever that it keeps being associated with it.

1. That is an apples to oranges comparison. People need to eat for survival, so they force themselves to shop even if they are uncomfortable. People outside of these forums do not have to go to the movies. For people that only see 1-5 films a year, they don't have to see TDKR, Ted, or TASM anytime soon, no matter how others feel about their decision.

2. If there is a supermarket shooting like Gabbie Giffords, they don't identify it with the supermarket or shopping. It is seen as politcal or a random nutcase. For instance, if everyone shot during Colin Ferguson's subway shooting spree in 1993 had been reading the NY Times no one would have linked the shooting to the NYT, it wouldn't have been called the NYT massacre. Here people were enjoying themselves, and they happened to be enjoying a particular film. The film got stigmatized by a lazy media looking for a hook to sell the story.

Some posters, especially BK, don't seem to understand for most people going to the movies is a way of escaping the real world. Shopping for groceries and other things that others mention are seen as drudgeries in the real world. Going to the movies for some right now is being reminded of the cruel world they are normally trying to escape from for a few hours. Shocking some don't want to go at the moment...

Saw it again at noon today maybe 40-50 people in the theater. This is the 3rd time I have seen it since the midnight. Something I have noticed.

EVERYONE turns their heads any time somebody walks into the theater during the showing. If someone wants proof that they are thinking about, look no further than that. It's front and center.

The dailies are encouraging. Fri & Sat were basically the same, and Sunday saw a tiny drop. I hope for stronger than usual weekdays and a great 2nd weekend hold.

oh, and It probably missed 35 million in total. 15 on Fri, 10 on Sat and Sun. Doubt it would have hit 200 million and def. wasn't going to top avengers, but easily set the admissions record.

I think some people definitely had the shootings way too fresh in their minds to want to go over the weekend, but as things die down, they'll still want to see it in theaters. A lot of people at work were talking about the shootings today, but then mentioned they plan to see the movie soon. One guy from work went to a theater sometime over the weekend a couple hours after someone was escorted from that theater because they had a gun on them. I heard that news over the radio when they were talking about some of the local news stories and all I could think was oh great, I hope there aren't anymore instances like this around the country going on. Like people need more reasons not to go to the movies. Stupid psychos trying to ruin everything. Planes, schools, now movie theaters. :disgust:

It will still make $500m+ which lets face it around what we all expected before Avengers came smashing through.

Perhaps in the end its overall gross will be the same as if the massacre didnt happen. The OW was certainly impacted though. Likewise with all the Top 10.

The shootings obviously affected the grosses but even if nothing had happened it wouldn't have beaten The Avengers. The most obvious clue is that everything else plummeted despite Batman having been successfully counter-programmed the last go around with Mamma Mia! and the drops overall not being nearly as bad as this time. People are just freaked out about going to theaters. Still a huge opening that will make shitloads of money for WB and in light of what happened I don't think anyone can call this a disappointment. Two years ago no film had even made this much on OW.

LOL at Spider-Man though.

I've seen a few people say that drops this weekend were similar to 2008, and that is some spectacular bullshit right there. For one, there were three openers in 2008 which combined for $193.3m, and yet still the drops weren't as severe. Or do you really think Spider-Man dropping nearly as much as Hellboy 2 (despite that being in its second weekend) or Ice Age 4 dropping the same as Hancock (despite the differences in demo and IA4 being in its second weekend) are at all similar? And then there's Moonrise Kingdom's drop and Ted, a film whose genre is typically pretty bullet proof to this kind of competition, imploding by 55%.

All this, despite Rises sold less tickets than its predecessor, and there not being two other openers making $35m as well.

The Amazing Spider-Man's drop is still stronger than poor Hellboy II's four years ago. :(

Something worth noting: when you cut out midnights, TDKR's OD is $45.1 million, below TDK's $49 million (Or $54 million adjusted). However, despite having less sellout business to push to the rest of the weekend, it managed a 2.89 IM, to TDK's 2.86. I'd consider this pretty impressive, and the Sunday number indicates that recovery is slowly happening.

I think we have a winner. People just want to believe what makes them feel good, facts be damned. It may be the only thing that remains constant at the box office. Moonrise Kingdom is playing at many old, niche theaters that are not even playing TDKR and it dropped over 50%, when 35% would be more expected with the types of holds it has had.

Surprise, surprise, mdana being a jackass once again. Stop being a condescending prick.

Reminded of the cruel world? They are going to a cinema where no one has been shot. It may come across as insensitive but, no one really has any right to feel violated when it happened in Aurora. Do you think there are mass murderers waiting in every city waiting for another Batman showing to start? I don't see anyone stop smoking marijuana just because dozens get killed every day in Mexico in a drug war fuelled by North American demand. I don't see anyone stop joining the army when hundreds of Afghan and Iraqi citizens have been in the crosshairs of dirty politics.

Have I hit too close to home? Prick.
