I am also surprised at how much bigger it was in America today than the Avengers and TDK combined.

Same here in America. Nobody in the streets. Everyone in the theater. Quite amazing.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
Strange vibe on this forum tonight, eh? Who would've ever thought World of KJ would be so low-key and subdued on the opening night of The Dark Knight Rises?
Not trying to be disrespectful. Just saying. Bit surreal.

I doubt it broke records, but if you were WB would you want to trumpet it broke the record at this moment in time? The media is constantly referring to it as the Batman massacre. If (big if) I remember correctly, McDonald's held off their quarterly earnings report in 1984 for a week or two after the San Ysidro massacre.

Come on Mdana, your way more knowledgeable then me on such things...
You know we do not get estimates only from studios...
Anyways I do not think it broke records, because to do it would have needed to the biggest non midnight Friday business today to break 90+ million.

I'm at a loss for words, I want to know the numbers, but at the same time I really don't care. I'm highly conflicted. This mornings events have left me feeling extreme sadness vthat I'm not sure how to deel with.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
You should still be excited! What happened in Colorado is tragic, a nightmare, but the world has to continue turning.
I'm still very, very excited to see how much The Dark Knight Rises earned yesterday. The film is still the film. Box office is still box office. Nothing's changed. The film doesn't deserve less money, and I don't feel I need to punish myself by pretending to not be excited to see its box office, because one madman chose to commit a senseless act during one of thousands upon thousands of showings.

Anyways I do not think it broke records, because to do it would have needed to the biggest non midnight Friday business today to break 90+ million. Then what are you stating? RTH stated he can't get the numbers, and he might not get them until Monday or at best in 20 hrs. There is something afoot, and you don't know what it is, but you are implying it must be x? Absence of proof is not proof of absence. We both agree it most likely did not break records. However, you are jumping to the conclusion it definitely did not, because of a false assumption of the studios or a company would leak this. Again if I remember right, McDonald's posted record profits or much better than expected, because they finally started taking back market share from Wendy's after the "Where's the Beef" campaign had died down. The speculation at the time was it would be a bad report, but it ended up being outstanding. I have little faith this is repeating itself, but I can't exclude that possibility. Even if it did $85m or $75m, WB might think it looks tacky and other studios don't have the numbers. The reason there were not many reports is most of us felt apathy or unease about tracking. It was not breaking the record most likely, so why bother and what is the point after this morning. I am guessing it made $75-80m based on the downward trend of Nikki's posts, but that is it. It seemed to do well enough in my limited survey to get over $50, but I also have little to base that suppostion. The rest of the studios may not want to look like a piranha or are angling to leak the numbers without their fingerprints. I have no idea exactly what is happening.

BJ-Seriously, David is pumping sunshine, but it is basically true. We don't quit shopping or follow politics, because Gabbie Giffords is shot at a Safeway or any other random shooting. I have been in numerous car accidents, because breaks failed, a drunk driver hit me, another driver fell asleep at the wheel and jumped a median. Life is for the living and we don't have control over what fate may bring us. If this brings you joy, embrace it. If you are filled with guilt or survivor's remorse do something else for awhile. We will still be here.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
Pre-sales should mitigate TDKR's Friday number. Saturday could see big drop ~40%.
I guess people are just not in the mood for this heavy movie laden with the memory of a real-life tragedy.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
I read a post by RTH that yes WB can embargo their numbers. Another post stated all studios are going to remain silent over the weekend. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/d ... ort-352717This may be premature with a crack reporter like Nikki... Quote: However, the numbers will still get out because Rentrak reports grosses all through the weekend. So reporters like me will know how The Dark Knight Rises is doing. ...but we might want to consider adding this with "Not a record" and "more to come" to her wing in the American Journalism Hall of Fame. http://www.deadline.com/2012/07/warner- ... l-weekend/

What is the point of Rentrak not reporting numbers this weekend. That makes absolutely no sense to me.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
Quote: I’m told there are a lot of admissions still to count, but The Dark Knight Rises looks to be in the $70 million range Friday – give or take a few million here or there – from 4,404 domestic theaters. That’s the 5th all-time opening day. Look for a huge drop Saturday because of the $30.6M in midnight shows, including $2.2M IMAX grosses. (Previous installment The Dark Knight dropped -29% its Saturday, and this should be no different.) My sources say the 3-day weekend cume looks to be in the $165M range with the caveat that the Colorado tragedy may have an impossible-to-predict effect. This will be the largest grossing 2D North American opening weekend ever, past 2008′s The Dark Knight at $158M. However, despite the “like nothing ever happened” box office momentum which Warner Bros saw Friday morning, it is clear that The Dark Knight Rises numbers won’t be record-breaking. Yes, because of pre-sales, midnights shattered the $18.4M midnights generated by Marvel’s The Avengers earlier this summer. But it didn’t beat Avengers‘ $80.5M Friday and won’t beat Avengers‘ all-time $207.4M collected from 2D, Digital 3D, RealD, and IMAX 3D theaters. $70m would be kind of low (less than what TDK did excluding midnights). I'm sure actuals will be higher (at least $75m). I'm also wondering how accurate that number can be seeing as Rentrak (& WB) isn't reporting numbers this weekend.
