Post Re: The Avengers
It's fun, and appropriately silly, but so much of the so-called plot and dialogue is just incoherent nonsense. Other than Loki, who were the bad guys? Generic evil aliens? Plus the Tesseract gave me bad memories of the AllSpark from Transformers, and the technobabble between Stark and Banner is laughable.

But the action scenes are exciting and well-shot, if somewhat cheap-looking, and RDJ is as hilarious as always (I lost it when he called Loki "Reindeer Games"). On the whole, it's a suitably entertaining picture, and I guess that's all that matters.

Yeah TA is no doubt one of the most entertaining films in year.

Many blockbusters have tried and have not reach the fun factor as this. I think many audience members will forgive the lack of a good story for its one liners and fun action.

Nonetheless WOM is still solid, no push back at all.

Actually its increasing on IMDB, now at number 25 place.

I agree, this might be the most crowd pleasing blockbusters since the first Pirates or Iron Man. Dark Knight has some tough shoes to fill, even though I think BB and TDK are technically better films.

TDK is a much better film..

However certain scenes in TA were some of the most amusing I have seen in a while.

The ending of the film felt like the old action films.

Where you have fun action with wit and humour.

I was surprised at how much I like Scarlett and her character in this (outside of the obvious eye candy). Very welcome addition to the team.

Colson was great also.

I think a sequel to this can work even better, especially without the assembling of the team which took up the first half of the film.

One thing I like is every character was at their best.

CA was way better, Hulk was 100000X times better.
Loki, Scarlet were much better.
IM was as good as he was in IM1.
Thor was the least improved but solid.

Very enjoyable. It was exactly what I expected- a big, dumb action movie. I don't have major issues with it because I wasn't expecting any kind of masterpiece. However to say this is somehow a cut above typical popcorn fare is pushing it. The action and the humor was great and it shits all over the previous Marvel entries (Iron Man 1 may have had a better, tighter story but the scope and humor of TA puts it way over) but is it deserving of that RT score, epic brilliant, better than TDK etc talk? No.

I liked all the Avengers except Captain America (what a ball of suck), even Tony Stark didn't annoy me a single time... Hulk was epic. Thor was a little underutilized, and Loki was pretty good. Love that scene where he gets pummeled by Hulk.

It's really bizarre that Thor actually felt more lost in this than Hawkeye to me, considering the latter has no backstory, no significant characterization, although he does have a purpose (scout/sharp shooter should never be underestimated in a war.) I hardly remember Thor, outside of that awful battle with IM which was the worst action sequen in the film.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

The movie is only better then other action films as its way more funnier and way more entertaining...

If that was not the case, TA would not be getting great wom.

This film is doing well for being one of the most entertaining films in years to audiences. Many blockbusters have tried and failed at doing what TA did.

I agree with this, totally. It's a crowd pleaser for sure. It's like Whedon tried to include a joke in every scene just to see what sticks, and luckily most of it worked. It's not cerebral in the slightest, I agree with whoever said before the technobabble between Stark and Banner was hilariously bad bordering on parody, but yeah that's not the point. The point is it was a big, fun, tongue in cheek action movie looking to show people a good time and it succeeded at that.

Yeah this did show itself to be a serious film or a dark film or a film about a storyline.

It was "hey get to see for the first time ever, many superheros in one film!"

I told you goes the image of having the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, CA and others in a circle was going to make all males head explode...

lol all guys I know...

To be honest I was not that excited for TA till about 2 weeks before release.

I was expecting IM2 quality and then the reviews came out and frankly every guy I know went crazy for the film and amazingly everyone I know loved it.

A great summer for Superheros.

One of the most entertaining Superhero films ever and one of the best movies ever coming out soon... (TDKR)

lolz, i didnt even think about that.

that is indeed really stupid.

Though....

1) Did Iron Man know that Thor could fly through space safely?
2) Did Thor have a comm-link? Considering that time was of the essence, it is unlikely (and unrealistic) that Tony would have had time to fly the nuke over to where Thor was and ask him to fly it through the portal.
3) Iron Man might be able to fly faster than Thor. Or, at the very least, think that he can fly faster than Thor.

So, that plot point doesn't bother me.

Also, the technobabble jargon between Bruce and Tony didn't bother me. Because the technology that exists in the Avengers movie doesn't exist in the real world. So, therefore it pretty much has to be a bunch of made up technobabble jargon in order to realistically express those two characters' level of intelligence.

The plot point that does bother me, however, is that the jet fighter pilot who launched the nuke had absolutely no emotions whatsoever about nuking NYC. It was just a cold, emotionless line reading.

Also, it didn't make sense to me for Hulk to try and attack the Black Widow. I know they tried to say that Loki was manipulating the situation and Bruce might have had lingering resentment towards the Black Widow for dragging him into the situation. But, regardless, that didn't gel for me.

I agree with the first sentence. Both of those movies were big crowd pleasers. However, while I liked Inception and Memento, I was disappointed with the Nolan Batman films.

Specifically, I didn't like...

1) I didn't find the love interest interesting and didn't care what happened to her.
2) I have never cared for Joker as a bat-villain. I've always felt that he was massively over-used.
3) Ra's is my favorite bat-villain and I was disappointed in how Nolan handled his character.
4) I thought that Harvey turned way too quickly into Two-Face and didn't like that Bruce didn't try to reason with him.
5) Batman would be more effective as a crime fighter if he's not a fugitive hunted by the police. Also, Gordon's career and freedom would be jeopardized if he ever got caught helping the fugitive Batman. Bruce's decision was completely illogical to me.
6) The use of generic mob characters in the Batman movies.

THIS.

That little bit with Fury's higher-ups was really botched. This is the biggest, most important city in the nation, the invasion has just started and so far is fairly under-control and yet they not only don't hesitate to order a nuke, multiple pilots are mobilized and so willing to kill 10m citizens they still fly off without hesitation after their most direct commander shoots one of them down with a bazooka. Then he never once looks back or shows the slightest indication of uncertainty. That's one inhuman sonofabitch.
Then again... it is the military.

Quote:
The Hollywood Reporter actually commissioned a report from Kinetic Analysis Corp., a real-life firm that specializes in "disaster-cost prediction and assessment."

Computer models determined that the physical damage of the Chitauri invasion would be between $60 billion and $70 billion. Add in "economic and cleanup costs" of $90 billion and "the loss of thousands of lives" and you've got a bill of $160 billion, give or take. Um, does Odin the All-Father still cover his sons' expenses?

"For context, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks cost $83 billion, Hurricane Katrina cost $90 billion, and the tsunami in Japan last year washed away $122 billion," says THR, while adding, "KAC also predicts that liability would be a major issue. Who, exactly, will have to pay for the damage? S.H.I.E.L.D., they note, is likely protected as a government agency, though probes eventually will look into its role in predicting, preventing and responding to the invasion … Given the involvement of individuals considered deities in some cultures (Thor, Loki), there is even the potential to classify the event as an 'act of God,' though that designation would be subject to strenuous theological and legal debate."

Click through for the full report -- which is a lot of fun and also mentions the Ghostbusters and Mechagodzilla -- and includes my favorite bit: "There was considerable collateral damage of questionable necessity by at least one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives (Hulk)."

Well they wanted Phase 2 even from the beginning. Unlike the "Arrest the war criminal with absurd power" they'd rather just use something to kill it completely In that retrospect, I'm sure pilots were trained uncontrollably to only carry out that single order and only listen to the highest in charge. Off screen of course.

As for Thor not disposing the nuke. It seems he would have needed to recharge with the lightning before he could do it, and Stark was already tailing it and had a plan, and as said earlier, captain America questioned his hero status.
