Best Foreign Language Film
Language is a barrier that movies can transcend. Storytelling at its best does not require a strict language code cause it involves you emotionally into its realm. This year as always we have a set of very unique and transcending movies

In modern-day Paris, a journalist finds her life becoming entwined with a young girl whose family was torn apart during the notorious Vel' d'Hiv Roundup in 1942. From France - Sarah's Key
Near the end of World War II, 14-year-old Michiel becomes involved with the Resistance after coming to the aid of a wounded British soldier. With the conflict coming to an end, Michiel comes of age and learns of the stark difference between adventure fantasy and the ugly realities of war. From Netherlands and Belgium Winter in Wartime
A brilliant plastic surgeon, haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig: a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession. From Spain - The Skin I Live In
A married couple are faced with a difficult decision - to improve the life of their child by moving to another country or to stay in Iran and look after a deteriorating parent who has Alzheimer. From Iran - A Separation
Twins journey to the Middle East to discover their family history, and fulfill their mother's last wishes. From Canada and France - Incendies

Best SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Image

Five performances by four actresses are nominated for Best Supporting Actress. The double nominee is Jessica Chastain, who, of course, had an amazing year, going from barely-visible indie starlet to legitimate Hollywood presence almost overnight. She is nominated for The Help and The Tree of Life. In the former, she gives a spirited, Marilyn Monroe-esque performance as a slightly ditzy woman who is shunned by the female neighbors in her small Southern town and befriends her maid, played by scene-stealing nominee Octavia Spencer, a hesitant, then powerful friendship which enriches and empowers both women. And in The Tree of Life, Chastain is an ethereal presence as the mother of three children in suburban Texas; she is romantic, spiritual, and whimsical where her husband (Brad Pitt) is stern and often cold.

Image

Another dynamite scene stealer is comedienne Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids. She plays Megan, a boisterous, loud, big-hearted woman who doesn’t exactly fit in at polite social engagements, but is there for those she cares for. Times critic Manohla Dargis called McCarthy’s colorful performance close to radical. The final nominee is Carey Mulligan in Shame, playing a brash, easily wounded woman whose electric presence disrupts the insular, tortured life of her older brother (Michael Fassbender). It could be argued the centerpiece of Shame is an extended scene where she performs a slow, sorrowful cover of “Theme from New York, New York.” As Mulligan sings the lyrics, “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere,” her delicate voice and downcast eyes suggest she, without help; won’t, not here, not there, not anywhere.

And the award for Best Supporting Actress goes to:

It was really tight between the top 4 2/3 the way through, but a surge of support propelled Spencer.

The Cinema. There’s something magical about it, no? That’s the message Hollywood seemed to shove down our throats in 2011. But what makes it magical? What makes movies just plain work? There are of course many answers to those questions, but one that is just as right as any is a film’s score.

It’s always there, giving us the cue to cry, be afraid, or simply remind us that a lot of shit is currently going down. It either reinforces the emotions of the actors onscreen or simply brings the emotion when your actor is Keanu Reeves.

When looking at KJ’s lineup of Best Original Score nominees, there is a great mix of classic, full orchestrated work as well as pulsating digital/synthetic scores. While “War Horse” and “The Artist” evoke deep feelings of nostalgia and pure joy in their period pieces, “Hanna,” “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and “Shame” mesmerize with their use of repeated, drawn out rhythms to dive the viewer deeper into their dark characters.

And while many have been calling “rape” on “The Artist” for its use of a piece of “Vertigo’s” score (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcMeTeqVnSg), the fact is, almost all our nominees borrow or rip-off another’s work in some form or another.

Unraveling (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9MZUeeg2Ug) from “Shame” uses almost the exact same tempo and opening instrumental sounds as Hans Zimmer’s Journey to the Line (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG9-j3eevL4) from “The Thin Red Line.”

To a lesser extent, in “Hanna,” The Chemical Brothers seem to replicate, yet slightly modify their beat in Container Park (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBmwcuLa1as) from The Whip’s Trash (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJ3eeRCoIBY). But really, how freaking awesome is it that they created the score before filming so that the filmmakers could match the fight choreography to the music’s beat?

And finally, to a very lesser extent, one can argue that many parts of John William’s “War Horse” score (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6kPufqT0TM) are simply modified pieces from any of his other dramatic works. Like Hans Zimmer though, you create enough music in your career, it’s hard not to (intentionally or not) recreate certain elements that worked in the past.

The point is, a great score doesn’t have to be purely original to be great: It just has to find the soul of its film and bring it to life in ways that only music can.

To recap, the 2011 WOKJ MPA nominees for Best Original Score are:

- Hanna
- The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
- The Artist
- War Horse
- Shame

And the winner is…
