What is Berserk rated in Japan - do you know? (And how does it compare to MPAA.)

Berserk is rated G, but a G in Japan is different than a G in the US. You can expect blood and violence. It's based mostly on the film's audience over the film's content more than anything. For example, every Harry Potter film was rated G in Japan. Terminator Salvation, Transformers (1-3), are other example of films with PG13 ratings in the US, but G ratings in Japan. And films that received an R rating in the US sometimes get PG12 in Japan. Sex and the City and all of the Resident Evil films are some examples.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Feb. 11-12, Weekend Forecast
February 11-12 Weekend Forecast01 ALWAYS: Sunset on Third Street '64 (Toho) Week 4 02 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Sony) Week 103 Shizanmono: The Movie (Toho) Week 3 04 Hayabusa: The Long Voyage Home (TOEI) Week 105 Phoenix Wright: The Movie (Toho) Week 106 Japan's Islands - Tales of the Animals (Toho) Week 2 07 Robo-G (Toho) Week 5 08 Tower Heist (Toho-Towa) Week 2 09 Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Paramount) Week 9 10 Arakawa Under the Bridge (Sony) Week 2 Always 3 will either just cross ¥2.5 billion ($33 million) in total this weekend, or come very close to the mark (¥2.4 billion+). Six-consecutive weeks on top looks like a near lock now. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is performing pretty well in advance, selling about 1/3 of the tickets M:I4 did before it's opening day (odd comparison, yes). If this comparison holds true for the weekend, Dragon Tattoo should gross around ¥150-175 million ($1.9-2.3 million) for the weekend. The 3-Day total will probably break ¥200 million ($2.5 million). Hayabusa: The Long Voyage Home and Phoenix Wright: The Movie look to be heading for the ¥100-150 million ($1.3-1.9 million) range, the former with the edge based on advance ticket sales. Films 6-8 are difficult to rank, all three likely grossing around ¥50/60 million ($700,000) for the weekend. Highlights among them being Robo-G exceeding ¥1 billion ($13 million) this weekend (if it didn't already on Friday). Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol will enjoy a ninth week in the Top 10 with a 59 Day projected total of ¥5.25 billion ($68/69 million).

Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Feb. 11-12, Weekend Forecast
Saturday Data brings great news.
Always 3 has been holding pretty good during it's run (-25/30% drops), but so far no spectacular holds. Until now. Saturday Data has it dropping under 9% from last weekend, meaning it may gross over ¥250 million ($3.3 million) in it's fourth weekend.
Dragon Tattoo picked up on Saturday and will definitely clear ¥200 million for the weekend. Saturday Data has it aiming for ¥230/235 million ($3.0 million), so ¥250 million (perhaps ¥300 million ($3.9 million)) will be cleared for the 3-Day total.
Hayabusa and Phoenix Wright are doing well, too, and will gross over ¥100 million each this weekend. Saturday Data has Hayabusa leading with ¥135/140 million ($1.8 million), and Phoenix Wright at ¥110/115 million ($1.5 million) for the weekend.
All the other holdovers are doing great, also. Shizanmono may drop less than 20% (enough to stay above Hayabusa), and Japan's Islands is looking at -10/15% for it's second weekend. The only film that isn't doing too great is Tower Heist. It's down just over 50% from last Saturday, but it could still avoid a 50% second weekend drop.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Feb. 11-12, Weekend Forecast
A lot of Studio Ghibli news released recently: Quote: Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki revealed on a television special that Goro Miyazaki (pictured right), the director of Tales from Earthsea and From Up On Poppy Hill, is planning a samurai period work that combines fact and fiction. On the "Iwai Shunji x Suzuki Toshio Tokubetsu Taidan" special that first ran on the Nihon Eiga Senmon Channel on January 5, Suzuki told filmmaker Shunji Iwai that Goro Miyazaki's project is set in the northeastern Tohoku region of Japan during the Middle Ages. Quote: Junichi Nishioka, the former head of Studio Ghibli's public relations department and writer of the studio's production diary (Itsumo no Ghibli Nikki), wrote in his new "Nishi Diary" on September 9 about another new work. In his new diary on the Ghibli Museum's website, Nishioka noted that "Director A" and "Director H" attended a meeting about an exhibition that "Director A" is supervising for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo this summer. A major highlight of the exhibition will be a new film work specifically made for the event. Nishioka did not specify the length of the work or whether it is live-action or animated.
Studio Ghibli's exhibitor page at the Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) website then revealed earlier this month that Evangelion director Hideaki Anno (pictured above left) is curating an exhibition at the museum with Ghibli. According to the page, "Director Hideaki Anno's Japanese Special Effects Museum" will cover the craftsmanship of the Showa (1926-1989) and Heisei (1989-current) eras through the miniature models used for special effects. (The exhibitor page has since removed any mention of the exhibition or Anno.) Quote: In a separate development, director and studio co-founder Hayao Miyazaki (Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Spirited Away, Ponyo) said in an interview in the January issue of Studio Ghibli's Neppū periodical that he plans to complete his current work a year and a half from now. However, he cautioned that he does not know what may happen during that timeframe — not just natural disasters such as earthquakes, but also changes in the state of politics and the world in general.
Goro Miyazaki talked about Studio Ghibli's next work in November: ""I think it'll be about two years from now. Actually, my dad [Hayao Miyazaki] has begun making it now. It's amazing." Suzuki added later that month that Hayao Miyazaki's next work "not the sort of work that everyone in the audience can relax and watch" since Miyazaki desired "to create something realistic." Quote: Ghibli director and co-founder Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, My Neighbors the Yamadas) confirmed in September that he also has a new work that may be about two more years from being close to completion. http://www.nausicaa.net/wiki/Latest_New ... from_JapanJuly 2013 or November 2013 for Hayao Miyazaki's next, and November 2013 or July 2014 for Isao Takahata's next - maybe? Ghibli always releases in July or November, but I don't believe they've ever released too films that close before, besides the double feature of My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies. Same directors, perhaps they plan to do that again.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Feb. 11-12, Weekend Forecast
Based on the Cinemas that have reported already, it appears Dragon Tattoo may very well have debuted in first place this weekend. It's been ranked 1st in admissions at every chain so far, so it would take significantly different avg. admission fees vs Always 3 (in 3D) to keep it from debuting on top.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Feb. 11-12, Weekend Forecast
Only Mission Impossible 4 and Always 3 have been No.1 so far this year.
It might be No.1, I don't know yet. It ranked 1st in admissions at every major Cinema Chain, except for Warner locations where Always 3 ranked 1st again. But Always 3 has higher tickets, so it could still have topped in gross for the weekend.
I'm going to post Dragon Tattoo weekend numbers in a few minutes.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Feb. 11-12, Weekend Forecast
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo debuted with ¥230,892,600 ($2.98 million) for the weekend on 427 screens, bringing the 3-Day Total to ¥288,471,700 ($3.71 million) and 227,524 admissions.
Still no update on whether that was enough to bump ALWAYS: Sunset on Third Street '64 out of the top spot for the weekend.
The avg. admission fee for Dragon Tattoo was about 1,278 ($16.50) Vs. Always 3's avg. admission fee of 1,319 ($17.10) last weekend. Not a significant difference, but enough to give Always 3 a possible fourth weekend on top if it's close in admissions like data suggested this morning.

Ah, I see what you meant now. Yes, for the BO Year it's the fifth. Dragon Tattoo did come out on top, by the way, in admissions and revenue this weekend. But I'll have to post the rankings and the figures released this evening (late for work already!).

Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Feb. 11-12, Weekend Ranking
Weekend Ranking is Up! *Dragon Tattoo debuts in 1st, probably heading for over $20 million making Japan it's biggest OS market I believe. *Shizanmono exceeds 1 billion yen. *M:I4 makes it 9 weeks in the Top 10. I'll post the Weekly Ranking for Feb. 6-10 soon.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Chart Update
Final Total Projections of the films above still in release or being tracked:
M:I-4 is slowing down some now, and is on target for 5.35-5.45 billion (low 70's) Always 3 is still going strong, and is on target for 3.5-4.0 billion (mid/high 40's) K-ON! is about to finish it's run, but will probably hit 1.7 billion ($22/23 million) before it leaves theaters. Fleet Admiral is in the same situation as K-ON!, but is aiming for 1.5 billion ($19/20 million) before its done. Shizanmono is looking good for 1.75-2.0 billion (mid 20's).
It's still early to project a total for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but it should be aiming for 1.5-2.0 billion (very high teens/low 20's).

Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Chart Update
NEW FEATURES: BOX OFFICE SPOTLIGHT [DAVID FINCHER]Panic Room had a great opening, but poor legs barely managing a 5x multiplier. Probably opening right after Spider-Man had some effect. The Weekly Box Office Ranking for Feb. 6-10 has been updated, too. You'll see that Tower Heist "climbed" 9 spot last week, but that's because it opened on a Friday which isn't part of the weekend, so it had a single day for the week. If you ever see such large gains on the Weekly Ranking page, Friday openings will almost always be the reason.

Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Archive Launched
Is it possible to get somewhere admissions numbers for past hits from top50 like Matrix, A.I., Armageddon or Phantom Menace? Or at least some estimates?

Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Archive Launched
Thanks, Sparrow.
I believe a chart was released during Avatar's run that listed every film that broke 10 million admissions. I think I even posted it a long time ago. Let me go back and check.
