Pfft, The Tree of Life and Hugo are terrific.

And no sweep for The Artist, now that it lost SAG Ensemble.

On the other hand, this was a pretty bad showing for The Descendants...

Er, The Help was always expected to win Ensemble? The Artist i not an ensemble film, at all, and if there's a big ensemble film that's also an Oscar contender, it usually wins. Losing Enemble didn't stop English Patient or Hurt Locker from bringing in big hauls. That Dujardin could beat two BIG movies stars is enouh indication that the actors love The Artist and would be willing to go with a semi-sweep for it.

What are you ranting on about...? I have never siad that it is in any danger of losing BP now. But a guilds sweep (that some did expect) is just not happening.

Post Re: Best Picture 2011
I think the problem with beating The Artist is there's no clear alternative...you have The Descendants as sort of the runner-up critical darling, then you have Hugo as the most-nominated, and finally you have The Help as the SAG ensemble challenger a la Crash/Inglourious. I actually think that despite the fact that The Help missed out on key categories that its in the best spot to beat The Artist for a couple of reasons: (1) huge box office and popularity with the Oscar-voting folks (old people lol) and (2) the book is immensely popular.

But saying its in the "best spot to beat The Artist" is like picking the best team to beat the Harlem Globetrotters. The Artist ain't losing...you can't imagine how many times I've heard from folks that The Artist is a must-see. I was watching a college basketball game and the announcer told his partner that he had to go see it. I was watching a political show, and the commentator randomly inserted it into the conversation as a must-see movie. It's really captured people's imaginations. And because it's so well-loved, it'll probably drag Jean Dujardin across the finish line too.
