1/12 THU Update: Great Magician is catching up with The Darkest Hour. It will soon overtake Darkest Hour in admissions. Chinese New Year notes: - The Flowers of War is once again receiving special screenings this weekend. This will be its 4th week of advanced screenings. - From Up on Poppy Hill will have a lot of special screenings on Saturday/Sunday. This will be its 2nd week of advanced screenings. It also has the potential to sneak into the top 5 on both days. - The Viral Factor will have public screenings starting on January 19.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn | $1,172,602 |
Happy Feet 2 | $817,131 |
The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate | $774,362 |
That actual for The Darkest Hour looks odd. I can't imagine it having a higher OD than Immortals by $20,000 when it was 5,000 admissions behind Immortals' OD admissions. If we apply Immortals' OD multiplier to The Darkest Hour, Hour would come in below The Great Magician's OD. As a sidenote, there were no price adjustments for 3D releases in December. The hikes only applied to 2D releases. Dragon Tattoo had a fairly good hold. Mission Impossible did well too. I see them flip-flopping when this weekend is over. MI4 will pass 5.5m but not much more. It might get to 5.6m before the holidays. Sherlock Holmes will get to 3.5m before it's taken out of theaters next week. Breaking Dawn had an excellent hold. It will still end up leaving theaters next week below Twilight's number. Pretty amazing that Twilight's number still holds up to this day when comparing it to the other films in the franchise. The Skin I Live In is holding well but it is too ambitious to suggest that it will match Tree of Life's number. It better hope that the arthouse theaters keep showing this, otherwise this will go kaput too next week. Turning Point 2 will come in well below its predecessor. It won't even make half of what the first one made. New Year's Eve crashed and burned. They got what they deserved for scheduling this after the holiday. We Bought A Zoo has done OK. You Are the Apple of My Eye and 3 Idiots runs look just about over. Their upcoming milestones won't be achieved. Alvin passes Tintin. Good performance from Alvin as it increased about 50% from the second movie. Tintin disappointed.

The Great Magician pulled away from The Darkest Hour to take the weekend. The weekend didn't really ignite the box office before the Chinese New Year holidays but that should all change next week. Good holds for Dragon Tattoo and Mission Impossible. They should find their way to about 1m and 5.65m respectively. Sherlock Holmes will squeeze 3.5m before leaving theaters. Friday schedules Note: Due to the abnormal scheduling for this week, I have decided to take Friday's schedules instead to get a truer picture of how badly holdovers get cut this weekend. Note 2: The number of showtimes in brackets for holdovers is from Tuesday due to The Viral Factor getting special previews starting on Wednesday. Note 3: All movies are leaving theaters on Wednesday, unless otherwise specified.

The two openers from this week weren't going to get cut in its 2nd weekend just yet. Palace APM may still cut both The Darkest Hour and The Great Magician on Saturday depending on Puss in Boots and The Viral Factor's full day schedules. Having a 7th screen at Festival Walk has really helped and allowed more holdovers to stay throughout Friday. More schedules to be posted throughout the week.

The Flowers of War - 3 showings | | Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows |
The Muppets (Can.) - 3 showings | | Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol |
Times Square, which is closing on Jan. 31, didn't see any major declines in showtimes with the two openers from last week on Thursday. Meanwhile, at Langham Place, The Great Magician even saw an increase in showtimes from Wednesday. Friday will see it come down a bit. _____________________________________ The Viral Factor did not rank in the top 5 on Wednesday's admissions chart as of yet. I'll keep you posted if it does.

Re: HK: Viral Factor OK 1st day; Journey 2 leading Thu. so f
Wednesday admissions (January 18) The Viral Factor - 7,295 That is about a $45,000-$50,000 OD.
| Thursday adm. | (so far) | | January 19 |
Rank | Title | LW | TW | % chg |
1 | Journey 2: The Mysterious Island 3D | -- | 9,979 | -- |
2 | The Flowers of War | -- | 3,796 | -- |
3 | From Kokuriko Hill (Can.) | -- | 2,183 | -- |
4 | The Viral Factor | -- | 2,092 | -- |
5 | The Great Magician | 3,620 | 1,998 | -44.8% |
Pretty good number for Journey 2. This will be the runaway leader for the weekend. That number for Flowers of War is underwhelming. Strong number for From Kokuriko Hill (From Up on Poppy Hill). Combine that Cantonese admissions number with the Japanese admissions number and it should overtake The Flowers of War this weekend in my opinion even with the 4 weeks of advanced screenings for Flowers. Flowers of War hasn't done well at night for some reason as it's running behind Kokuriko Hill, Viral Factor, Journey 2 and the other 2 Chinese New Year flavoured releases at a number of theaters. I expect a downsize in screens for Flowers Saturday/Sunday. Very good number for The Viral Factor. Wednesday previews thinned out the admissions for Thursday previews but that is an excellent number because all theaters are only showing previews at night. Good for The Great Magician but it'll have terrible holds for the rest of the weekend.

I'm happy that From Kokuriko Hill is doing so well. Almost as happy as when I saw the large poster display for Arrietty outside my local theater tonight!

I have no idea why The Darkest Hour won the weekend. Its multiplier from admissions to gross was over a whopping 12x. Not even Transformers 3, Pirates 4, Harry Potter 7-2 or any other 3D release in the last few years had that kind of a multiplier. Those movies had IMAX too. I'm kind of shocked it beat Immortals' OW when it was behind Immortals' OW admissions by 5,000 tickets. The only explanation I have is that they count those seats "sold" that are in the front as part of its OW. (3D releases have the first two or three rows closest to the screen blocked off and marked as 'sold' tickets.) Combine that with the number of showtimes that it got then I can see why it had such a bizarre weekend. What baffles me is that it didn't even come close to The Great Magician on Saturday or Sunday in admissions and it lost to The Great Magician on all 4 days. Fantastic hold for Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Good hold for Mission Impossible. 5.7m might still happen. Sherlock Holmes had an OK drop and should still pass 3.5m. The Skin I Live In will pass The Tree of Life now. Breaking Dawn will barely pass Eclipse to become the 2nd biggest in the franchise. Awful for Turning Point 2. We Bought A Zoo had a good run but it'll end here with about $450,000. Terrible for New Year's Eve.

Very good for Journey 2. The Flowers of War is fizzling out. Not good for it. Extremely strong number for The Viral Factor. More and more people are noticing that there are special previews for it. Increasing from its opening day previews is a very good sign. From Kokuriko Hill is doing good and I am still favouring it to come in over The Flowers of War but The Viral Factor is coming on really strong. We'll see how the 2 weekends of special previews for it factors into its opening weekend gross. Still a good drop for The Great Magician under the circumstances although it will fall to smithereens this weekend.

The Flowers of War is falling apart. Good for Journey 2 and Kokuriko Hill. Weak start for ILHK 2012. The Viral Factor continues to impress. Incredible increase. Saturday update Journey 2 is picking up the pace in admissions on the weekend. Puss in Boots is doing well at most Broadway locations. It is only doing ok at UA theaters. The Viral Factor is doing extremely well at UA theaters but it is not doing as great in Broadway theaters. From Kokuriko Hill is doing better at Broadway/AMC than UA. Flowers of War isn't doing well at both of the bigger theater chains. Here's how it looks at UA. Increasing (in showtimes) The Viral Factor Puss in Boots (NEW) Decreasing (in showtimes) Journey 2: The Mysterious Island The Flowers of War From Kokuriko Hill The Muppets All's Well Ends Well 2012 I Love Hong Kong 2012 And at Broadway: Increasing (in showtimes) Puss in Boots (NEW) Journey 2: The Mysterious Island The Flowers of War Steady or mixed The Viral Factor From Kokuriko Hill Decreasing (in showtimes) The Muppets All's Well Ends Well 2012 I Love Hong Kong 2012

Sunday update
Huge spikes across the board with 9 PM & 11 pm showtimes especially with I Love Hong Kong 2012. Late midnight shows are also getting in on the action. 3D films are only getting a small gain from these showtimes but The Flowers of War continues to suck the life out of theaters with no noticeable boost.

Missing: I Love Hong Kong 2012, The Viral Factor, All's Well Ends Well 2012. Even though they've all had special screenings, they haven't officially opened yet. Strong for Journey 2. The Flowers of War had a decent sized start but the 4 weekends of special previews didn't seem to do much for in terms of generating buzz. Pretty good start for From Kokuriko Hill. Great Magician didn't do so great after all in terms of gross. Horrible for The Darkest Hour. This will fall over 90% this weekend. Very poor for The Muppets. 1m is looking difficult to reach for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Mission Impossible is getting cut down and will only be shown in 5 theaters throughout the Lunar New Year holidays. The Skin I Live In had a very nice hold. It'll get a nice bump from Cinematheque beginning on Saturday. Breaking Dawn passes Eclipse to become the 2nd highest grossing film in the franchise but it has been left in only 1 theater.

Very good for Journey 2. Excellent for The Viral Factor. Combined 3-day previews total should come in with about $150,000. Not bad for The Flowers of War. Not great for I Love Hong Kong 2012 but that will change on Saturday leading into Sunday. That also goes for All's Well Ends Well 2012, mind you. Decent for From Kokuriko Hill. Weekend projections1. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - $1,300,000 2. The Viral Factor - $620,000 (incl. previews) 3. I Love Hong Kong 2012 - $475,000 4. From Kokuriko Hill - $400,000 5. All's Well Ends Well 2012 - $350,000 6. Puss In Boots - $325,000 7. The Flowers of War - $300,000 X. The Muppets - $80,000 X. A Happy Event - $15,000Journey will continue to lead the slew of new releases. The Viral Factor has become the #2 movie of the weekend. I Love Hong Kong and All's Well Ends Well will use its Sunday to boost its weekend totals. From Kokuriko Hill is fading but it should still rank in the top 5 for the weekend. Puss in Boots will benefit from 3D prices and sneak in ahead of The Flowers of War. Meanwhile, Flowers isn't doing that great with the holiday so its weekend should be fairly stable. The Muppets should finish below $100,000 for the weekend. A Happy Event isn't lighting the 3 theaters showing this on fire so it will take in below $20,000. Sunday updateI Love Hong Kong 2012 is doing really well. In fact, it's been doing so well that at noon (Thursday), it sold out its Sunday night 11:50 PM in just a few hours. Similar things are occurring with All's Well Ends Well 2012 although not to the extremes that Love Hong Kong has been going through. Journey 2 remains steady. The Viral Factor is perking up as well. Puss in Boots is unable to take much advantage of this being a kids movie. Same thing with From Kokuriko Hill but it's been bleeding admissions. Flowers of War hasn't benefited from this very much although ticket sales did see a slight increase Sunday night. Sunday projections1. Journey 2 - $520,000 2. The Viral Factor - $250,000 3. I Love Hong Kong 2012 - $200,000 4. Puss in Boots - $160,000 5. All's Well Ends Well 2012 - $150,000

The two (Chinese) New Year themed movies are poised to explode over the weekend.
I'm rather surprised From Kokuriko Hill didn't do better than The Flowers of War. Its opening was soft compared to other Hayao Miyazaki titles.

Kokuriko Hill is directed by Goro Miyazaki (Tales from Earthsea). Arrietty or Earthsea would be better comparisons than Ponyo or Howl, I think.

Re: HK: Weekend projections + Thu. actuals; ILHK big Sun. le
They're marketing the movie moreso based on its #1 ranking in Japan last year than Hayao Miyazaki.
It's funny how Broadway and UA scheduled the films this entire week. They each have 1 film out this holiday weekend. The Viral Factor is a UA film while The Flowers of War is being distributed by EDKO (owners of the Broadway/AMC chains). Seeing UA give The Viral Factor 2 screens and Broadway leaves Flowers on its biggest screens while each theater chain giving the other movie limited showtimes is hilarious. It's like they purposely don't want the other film to do well.

Journey 2 has been steady all week. Very nice weekend so far with the big day still to come. Viral Factor is doing phenomenal. Marketing for this has paid off in spades. Slow but steady for The Flowers of War. Not bad for I Love Hong Kong 2012. I greatly overestimated Puss in Boots. Animation has been on a downward spiral ever since Toy Story 3. Including the Eng. version, its opening day could be anywhere from $80,000-95,000.
| Sunday adm. | (so far) | | | January 22 | |
Rank | Title | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg | Admissions gain from Saturday |
1 | Journey 2: The Mysterious Island 3D | -- | 22,257 | -- | +45.3% | +6,937 |

5 | Puss in Boots (3D Can.) | -- | 5,773 | -- | +11.7% | +603 |
Journey 2 had a very good increase. Similar story with The Viral Factor. Impressive gain on Sunday. They both pale in comparison, however, to I Love Hong Kong 2012 which went from unranked on Saturday to #3 on Sunday with at least a 10,000 admissions increase all thanks to the proximity to the Lunar New Year holidays. All's Well Ends Well 2012 is following in ILHK 2012's footsteps but not to the same degree. It still saw an increase of over 100% from its Saturday morning's admissions. Puss in Boots is being left behind by the 2 New Year's themed movies in admissions. It should still beat out All's Well for the day in gross though.

I Love HK had an excellent increase through the holidays and The Viral Factor played strongly. Puss in Boots continues to be below average. 2m is still on the table. All's Well did pretty awful. Its first week total didn't even make half of the opening weekend from last year's version.

Huge gains for just about everything with the exceptions of Kokuriko Hill and Great Magician, thanks to lots of people taking the whole week off. Journey 2 is doing fantastic. Beating the first one is a lock. 5m is not a done deal yet. It still needs OK holds to hold on for 5m but this happened to The Incredibles in 2005. Incredibles made 3.4m after two weeks, also increasing in its 2nd week, but only made $900,000 the rest of the way. The holidays also fell on weekdays in The Incredibles' 2nd week which lead to the bump. Top 5 of the year is a definite possibility. I Love Hong Kong is doing quite well. It will make 2m and should finish with around 2.4m. Holds after the holiday are pretty disastrous for any type of Lunar New Year-themed movie. The Viral Factor is exhibiting strong daily holds and will continue to perform above expectations through this weekend. 2m is still happening although anything above could be ruled out. 2 action films are coming out next weekend and that will take us through a barrage of action movies opening in February. Puss in Boots has suffered from the weight of the competition but it will still make it to 2m. Past animated releases on the Chinese New Year holidays haven't done so well after the holidays ended so expecting Shrek 4 like numbers is out of the question. All's Well Ends Well bounced back after the holidays but it will come in way below last year's total. Helped by well-timed wins for Picture/Director at the Golden Globes, The Descendants will make about $350,000 this weekend. Its run will get cut short by 3 award contender films next week. Flowers of War is doing alright. 1m is happening but like the Descendants, it will face immense competition from Award winners/Oscar nominees. Kokuriko Hill looked ok in the beginning but has faded since. It's going to need one heck of a push to pass Tales of Earthsea now. Disappointing. The Muppets looks like it's benefiting from strong word-of-mouth. $300,000 should happen. The Great Magician had a terrible drop but it will pass The Darkest Hour (if it hasn't already) and a 2 multiplier. Mission Impossible will just miss Pirates for 4th. 3 Idiots passing 3m is a certainty. I don't see it being let go for quite a while. It should also pass South Korea's gross to become the highest international market. It has already beaten one record: most number of weeks spent in theaters. It beat Avatar's 20 week run. It's now in its 21st week. REVISED 3-day holiday Estimates/First week totals1. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - $1,500,000/$2,600,000 2. I Love Hong Kong 2012 - $800,000/$1,130,000 3. Puss in Boots - $700,000/$990,000 4. The Viral Factor - $610,000/$1,110,000 5. All's Well Ends Well 2012 - $465,000/$695,000

The end of the holidays is near. Journey 2 did alright. Very strong for The Viral Factor. I Love Hong Kong is starting to show some cracks and it'll be a tight race between this and The Viral Factor for 2nd. All's Well had a solid Friday hold. Nice uptick for The Descendants. Still on track for a $350,000 weekend. January 26 Weekend Projections1. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - $1,200,000 ( +5.9%)/$3,775,000 2. The Viral Factor - $630,000 ( +25.3%)/$1,715,000 3. I Love Hong Kong 2012 - $600,000 ( +76.4%)/$1,735,000 4. Puss in Boots - $550,000 ( +84.6%)/$1,430,000 5. All's Well Ends Well 2012 - $400,000 ( +72.9%)/$1,100,000 6. The Descendants - $350,000 (incl. previews) Journey should stay flat or come in with a slight increase. Either way, it's headed for 4.5m. The Viral Factor is already up to 60,000 admissions for the weekend and will be hard pressed not to match its 3-day holiday admissions figure. I Love Hong Kong has taken a hit this weekend and Sunday should pull Viral Factor ahead of Love HK for 2nd. Families won't want to watch this when they have to go back to work/school. Action movies have typically shown better drops on Sundays. Puss in Boots won't make the admissions chart but will slide in ahead of Descendants and All's Well. It'll be close for 2m. All's Well will finish above 1.5m. The Descendants looks to get off to a good start this weekend with about $350,000. With good reviews, this could end up with $900,000 if the competition doesn't get to it that badly next week.

Re: HK 1/26: WKD Projections - Journey 2 up; Viral vs. <3 HK
Does a film that wins big at the Academy Awards see big results in HK?

A Separation and We Need to Talk about Kevin are due March 1 Already updated on first post. Don't think it correlates that much to what their chances are of winning the Oscars. Last 3 Best Picture winners opened the weekend after the Oscars aired. Corpse wrote: Does a film that wins big at the Academy Awards see big results in HK? Generally no, but it depends. For example, The King's Speech resonated with the HK public and the Oscar win helped with its box office slightly unlike The Hurt Locker which made less than half. Usually Best Picture winners see a slight increase after its win but nothing major. Black Swan had unbelievable hype/buzz which overshadowed the Oscar bump. Slumdog Millionaire was a exception. The Oscar win really helped and sent its box office to 3m. We may see a bigger bump than usual because Hugo/Artist are going up against Underworld and Ghost Rider on opening weekend.
