The Iron Lady

Quote:
The Iron Lady, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, is a biographical British film about former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, portrayed primarily by Meryl Streep, but also, in her formative and early political years, by Alexandra Roach. Thatcher's husband, Denis Thatcher, is portrayed by Jim Broadbent, and Thatcher's longest-serving cabinet member and eventual deputy, Geoffrey Howe, is portrayed by Anthony Head.

Almost the exact same as J. Edgar in the fact that it's a ton of mediocrity centered around a great lead performance. Meryl is great, but this is a totally conventional and predictable biopic that offers no real insight into Margaret Thatcher or expands on anything she actually did. There's a whole lot of montage used to speed through the years and a great deal of the film finds Streep walking around a dimly lit house talking to her deceased husband (Jim Broadbent) and the whole thing gets annoying after a while. I also thought the actors playing the younger versions of Thatcher and Dennis were atrocious. Phyllida Lloyd is such an awful, awful director. Most of the reason the film doesn't work is her fault. C/C-

No wonder they kept pushing this back until the very end of the year. Reviews are not too great outside of praise for Streep's performance.

Meryl wouldn't even make my top ten female performances of the year, to be honest.

This is why I'm a little skeptical of Meryl winning the Oscar this year. They're really going to give her her third Oscar for this film? I mean, I want to see it for her performance but I'm not expecting a great movie here.

Michelle Williams and Viola Davis aren't in great films either. Or even very good ones.

From your view, though. The Help and My Week with Marilyn are well-received other than their main performances, especially the former obviously. I just have a hard time seeing a film like The Iron Lady, with has actually been quite negatively received in some circles, lead to Meryl's "at last" third Oscar.

The Iron Lady disappointed me a good bit. The screenplay is by far one of the worst of the year and the whole thing with Thatcher seeing her husband still after he died, is the peak of how bad it was. Meryl Streep is alright, though she doesn't pull an Oscar-worthy performance here. Anyway, I was really glad when it was over. *

I decided to bump my Iron Lady grade down a notch to a B-. I still feel Meryl gave a brilliant, nuanced, film-elevating performance, but it does annoy me how shallow, borderline nonexistent, the film's politics are. Very mixed feelings, torn between absolute LOVE for certain elements and a degree of disdain for others.

Not only the worst film of 2011 but possibly one of the worst films I have ever seen. Its like a stuttering diarrhea victim scrawled a cry for help on screen with the contains of his pants.

It's not even a case of admiring or despising Thatcher I am pretty sure I don't like Stalin but if they based a movie of his life around him on his deathbed and then flashbacks to his childhood I would label it equally shit.

Maggie got old and lost her mind eh? No way! That doesn't like happen to...........large chunks of the population, thinks for that amazing insight film. Ooooo wait you are going to delve into the Falklands this might be interes............oh wait we've gone back to her yammering to dead husband oh well i............wait some commons stuff mayb.............no back to sniffing his clothes and possibly wetting herself in a deleted scene.

In short, fuck you Iron Lady I've known dildo based massage that's proven more useful. Oh and somebody tell Streep imitating wax work people is not good acting, its just bad. bad bad bad bad.

The film was interesting when the focused on her life and her actions.

There was to much silliness and time spent on current day.
