 Re: Shame
What a brilliant, brilliant movie. The best movie I've seen so far this year and I can't imagine any film yet to be released (or that I haven't seen) beating it. It was that great. It's a shame it will probably be (mostly) ignored come Oscar season due to it's rating. Michael Fassbender... Holy shit. Seriously, he deserves to win Best Actor for this. He is completely amazing, best performance of the year. Carry Mulligan was great as well. If these two don't get at the very least nominated there is something wrong. The film was very realistic and incredibly disturbing, but it worked. Everything about it was absolutely brilliant. Don't miss this.
10/10

 Re: Shame
I dunno, I almost wish they had just focused on Brandon throughout instead of introducing Sissy. Part of this is my problem with Carey Mulligan, but I also think her place in the film - loud, histrionic, and attention-grabbing - seems at odds with the aesthetic and narrative concerns. That's undoubtedly the point, but it just rang false to me; perhaps a better actress, or a better-written character, would've solved the issue.
But Fassbender is a beast, and McQueen continues with the same kind of technical prowess he showed off in Hunger (the date scene reminded me of the long conversation between Bobby Sands and the priest). It occasionally seems like there's not always a clear motivation behind some of his decisions, but it's so breathtaking that I hardly minded. I'm excited to see what they'll do next.

Undoubtedly, but she could've been inserted better.

 Re: Shame
There's also the incest angle, which is hinted at but never really articulated (probably for good reason).

And also after he walks in on her in the shower, where he lingers for far too long.
I could buy the sexual abuse background, but I'm glad the film didn't go there. Would be too much of a rote explanation.

 Re: Shame
It's interesting how the "New York, New York" scene was written vs. how it's shown in the film: http://www.foxsearchlight.com/fyc/media ... script.pdfIt's simpler (and better, IMO) in the film.

 Re: Shame
I wish this would open here or have a screen be released. I can't get it out of my head.

 Re: Shame
Great movie. Really well-made with incredible performances from Fassbender and Mulligan. They played off each other terrifically.
I saw it at a 2:30 showing at the Uptown in Minneapolis last Thursday and there was around 50 people there. Actually didn't expect that many for such an early showing. My friend and I were the first ones there a half hour before showtime so I was thinking there wouldn't be many more but not long after people started coming in. A lot of people by themselves but also some groups of girls. Everyone was great during the movie and didn't laugh inappropriately at the sex scenes, but when it ended around half the audience erupted into laughter, which I assume is due to the open ending. I had no problem with the ending myself. Didn't really feel the need for there to be more. Was definitely an interesting movie-going experience. I'd never went to Minneapolis for a movie before. Am glad I could support this one.
Will be a shame if Fassbender and Mulligan can't score Oscar nominations.

 Re: Shame
Abrupt/ambiguous endings can inspire nervous laughter, definitely. It didn't happen at my Shame showing, but it did at the end of Martha Marcy May Marlene.

 Re: Shame
It's a terrific score, though one piece, the 9-minute "Unravelling," is very similar to Hans Zimmer's "Journey to the Line" from The Thin Red Line. Almost plagiarism.

 Re: Shame
Really really loved it. Both looks great and allows itself to aesthetically embellish, but is indebted to its story/characters.
I definitely like how they didn't make them fk. The under the surface nature of it makes it more interesting. I agree the "We're not bad people" thing and how he hardly blinked at having a conversation with her naked is the biggest smoking gun

Shame
A powerful film telling the story of a very common societal trend. High on performance and shock value, with a great accompanying score, Steve McQueen is now a director that I must watch more of. Filmed almost to perfection, with super-long takes and invasive but realistic scenes of lust, Shame is a mini-masterpiece in the genre.
