"Taking first place in at least a dozen of 45 overseas markets played, Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn scored its second consecutive No. 1 box office weekend on the foreign theatrical circuit with a $40.8 million gross collected from 6,811 offshore locations.

Since its foreign debut on Oct. 26, nearly two months prior to its scheduled domestic opening, the 3D motion-capture animation produced by Peter Jackson and based on the European comic book series created by Belgian artist Herge has sailed past the $100-million mark with an accumulated tally of $125.3 million.

Meanwhile, opening in 23 markets via Universal day-and-date with its domestic bow was director Brett Ratner’s Tower Heist, collecting $9.5 million from 1,948 sites for a per-screen average of nearly $5,000. The Imagine Ent./Relativity Media crime caper costarring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy premiered No. 3 in the U.K. ($2.3 million drawn from 416 spots) and opened No. 2 in Spain ($1.6 million at 300 playdates). The film has 42 offshore territories yet to play.

Sony is co-distributing Tintin with Paramount offshore. Biggest weekend opening was a No. 2 debut in Russia, which contributed $5.9 million from 900 screens. In Spain, the first-pace second weekend chalked up $6.15 million, lifting the market total to $18.1 million.

Tintin premiered No. 1 in Finland and Greece, and drew $7.8 million from 914 venues in its No. 2 second round in France for a market total of $39.8 million. In the U.K. where the film is distributed by Paramount, the first place take was $3.3 million elicited from 517 spots for a market cume of $16.4 million.

Tintin’s box office action has ignited foreign box office at a key moment since 2011 gross estimates to date indicate that with nearly two full months left to the year – and the bulk of the big holiday films still to open offshore -- Hollywood’s six major studios are collectively on track to notch a new foreign box office record.

Through Oct. 31, the “big six” amassed combined international box office of $11.694 billion, just about $1 billion shy of the 2010’s record $12.7 million benchmark, according to studio figures.

Paramount International leads the pack in the 10-month overseas gross sweepstakes with total box office of $2.626 billion, followed by Warner Brothers International, with $2.5 billion. Then, Disney ($2.054 billion), 20th Century Fox ($1.925 billion), Sony ($1.493 billion) and Universal ($1.095 billion).

In Time is showing box office energy overseas with its second weekend take of $16.6 million, drawn from 3,517 locations in 52 markets, placing the sci-fi/thriller costarring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried in the overall No. 2 spot. Distributor Fox says the film is “on track to achieve over $90 million” in offshore box office. “If later markets open like these early markets have, it could pass $100 million before the (offshore) run is over.” Cume so far is $38 million.

Ranking No. 3 on the weekend was DeamWorks Animation’s Puss In Boots, which grossed $15 million from 1,262 venues in just four markets, Russia ($13.6 million from 1,007 locations for a $35 million market cume), the Ukraine ($953,000 from 124 spots for a cume of $3 million), the Philippines and Trinidad. Total foreign box office for the 3D animation spinoff of Shrek is $39 million after two rounds of foreign play. Paramount, which is distributing Puss In Boots overseas, plans openings later this month in Singapore, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates and Spain.

No. 4 was Paramount’s horror outing Paranormal Activity 3, which was spurred by No. 1 openings in Germany and Austria to a total weekend take of $14.1 million from 3,662 locations in 50 territories. Overseas cume comes to $77.1 million.

Blazing out of the gate in France and ranking No. 5 overall was Gaumont’s release of Intouchables, co-directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano’s comedy about a wealthy quadriplegic and an ex-con immigrant from the projects who is his caretaker. Debut round for the closing-night selection at this year’s 59th San Sebastian International Film festival bagged an estimated $12.5 million from 500 screens, the market’s largest opening gross for a French film this year. The Weinstein Co. has scopped up U.S. and Canada release rights.

After five rounds of foreign release, Disney sci-fi/action drama Real Steel has accumulated a total of $127.2 million. Weekend provided $10.7 million from 38 territories. Worldwide gross comes to $206 million. Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes finished No. 1 in China for the second straight stanza, and collected $7.47 million overall on the weekend from 2,981 situations in five markets. Foreign cume comes to $294.3 million.

Johnny English Reborn, the spy spoof sequel starring Rowan Atkinson, pushed its international gross total to $139.6 million thanks to a $7.3 million weekend at some 3,500 sites in 53 markets. Summit Int’l./Constantin’s The Three Musketeers in 3D has passed the $100 million mark in worldwide box office ($113 million) almost all of its grossed offshore (foreign cume, $94.7 million). Weekend at 5,345 venues in 61 markets came up with $5.8 million. Warner’s disease-disaster drama Contagion has grossed $45.5 million so far overseas after a $5 million weekend at 2,547 sites in 45 territories.

Other international cumes: Sony’s The Smurfs, $416.5 million; DreamWorks/Disney’s The Help, $22.1 million; Fox’s What’s Your Number, $15.7 million; Disney’s The Lion King 3D, $53.1 million; Paramount’s Footloose, $10 million; Universal’s The Change-Up, $31 million; Universal and other distributors’ Drive, $1.3 million in Russia via Universal; Fox’s You Are The Apple of My Eye, $18.5 million; Morgan Creek’s The Thing, $4.9 million in territories handled by Universal; and Sony’s Anonymous, $1.1 million."

Apes is closing by for #100 and there is a slight chance that it passes Fox's Rio, but that would depend entirely on the legs its shows from here on in China.

Smurfs finally took over Cars 2 in WW total...amazing.

Tintin looks like it will end up equal to the rest of the animation movies and will not be able to outgross Cars2 or Smurfs. KFP2 still stays the WW total champ regardless and I don't see any other movie coming close to its WW or OS total this year. It will also be hit in a lot of markets by HFP2 and Puss both of which will start rolling from next week onwards in OS markets.

Breaking Dawn scored best opening in 7 years here in Croatia. 49 392 people in 4 days. Small market, but such a shameful fact. Sigh...

December 2-4 Weekend Results

"Grossing 47% less than last weekend, Summit Int’l.’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part I still managed to remain No. 1 on the foreign theatrical circuit this round, bleeding an estimated $40.2 million from some 9,000 screens in 73 territories

Box office total over three overseas frames for the fourth installment of the girl-loves-vampire saga based on Stephanie Meyer’s novels comes to $341 million (worldwide, $588.3 million).

While well ahead of the $200 million grossed offshore by series original (2008’s Twilight), Breaking Dawn still lags behind the total offshore takes of 2009’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($416 million) and last year’s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($400 million).

Nonetheless, Breaking Dawn provided a spark to an otherwise lethargic box office round internationally. It opened No. 1 in South Korea, logging an estimated $3.2 millon from some 620 sites ($4.27 including previews). Robust market cumes so far include the U.K. ($43.4 million), Russia ($30.8 million), France ($26 million) and Australia ($24.7 million).

The weekend’s less-than-stellar box office overall did not diminish strong numbers in 2011 to date logged by the Hollywood studios.

Calendar year gross estimates to date indicate that with nearly a month left – and several holiday films still to open offshore – the six major studios are rushing towards a new foreign box office record in 2011.

Through Nov. 30, the “big six” amassed combined international box office of $12.539 billion, just $161 million shy of the 2010’s record $12.7 million benchmark, according to studio figures.

Paramount International leads the pack in the 11-month overseas gross sweepstakes with estimated total box office of $2.871 billion, followed by Warner Brothers International with $2.600 billion, matching the unit’s comparable 2010 total.

Then, Disney ($2.168.billion), 20th Century Fox ($2.022 billion, down 23% from 2010), Sony ($1.677 billion) and Universal ($1.201 billion, up 9% from last year).

Broadening its foreign run by openings in 13 new territories, DreamWorks Animation’s Puss In Boots elevated its weekend gross to $23 million derived from a total of 2,740 venues in 26 markets. It finished No. 2 on the weekend. Cume for the 3D animation spinoff of Shrek stands at $89.2 million. (Paramount is handling offshore distribution.)

Biggest of the new markets was France, where Puss opened No. 2 with $8.1 drawn from 671 situations. A No. 1 Mexico opening generated $3.8 million from 526 locations while the second round in Spain contributed $3.1 million from 383 sites. In Russia, the market cume has topped $50 million. Puss opens in 16 markets this week including the U.K., Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Brazil and Venezuela.

Third on the weekend was Warner Bros.’ release of Happy Feet Two, Village Roadshow’s family-oriented animation sequel about an amiable penguin. Weekend take registered $16.3 million derived from some 7,000 screens in 40 territories, raising the foreign cume to $34 million.

A No. 3 opening in the U.K. generated $2.6 million from 491 sites. A Russia bow generated $3.6 million from 926 sites while a No. 3 Germany debut kicked in $1.2 million from 690 sites. Happy Feet Two opens in France on Wednesday (Dec. 7).

France’s comedy sensation, Intouchables, continues its torrid pace in the market, holding the No. 1 spot for the fifth consecutive weekend with an estimated tally of $11.9 million from some 720 screens, down a mere 17% from its prior round. It ranks No. 4 overall on the weekend.

The Gaumont release about the prickly relationship between a wealthy quadriplegic (Francois Cluzet) and his caretaker (Omar Sy) has grossed a total of $92.8 million in France alone, and is expected to cross the $100 million mark there by next weekend.

No. 5 was Sony Animation’s Arthur Christmas opened in at least a dozen new markets, generating $11.4 million on the weekend overall from 5,720 situations in 52 markets. Top market tally was generated in the U.K. where the seasonal family title ranked No. 2 in its fourth stanza, raising $2.9 million from 815 sites for a market cume of $18.2 million. Its overall international cume stands at $45.3 million.

Logging a $4 million Japan opening via Toho, Sony/Paramount’s The Adventures of Tintin:The Secret of the Unicorn looks to finish the weekend with $10.6 million overall drawn from 10,833 sites in 54 markets. Steven Spielberg’s stop motion animation in 3D, which won’t open in the U.S. until Dec. 21, has grossed a total of $221.6 million since it opened offshore on Oct. 26.

20th Century Fox’s release of In Time, New Regency’s sci-fi thriller costarring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried had a No. 2 opening in Germany, drawing $2.7 million from 414 sites. Weekend overall generated $9.59 million from 3,680 situations in 45 territories, pushing the film’s foreign cume to $82.6 million.

Disney’s Real Steel, now in its ninth round of offshore release, lifted its foreign gross total to $176.4 million thanks to a $5.3 million weekend from playdates in 51 territories. A Japan opening looms this week for the Hugh Jackman sci-fi vehicle.

With 10 territories still to open, including Mexico this week, Universal’s Tower Heist has snared a foreign gross total so far of $42.5 million. Weekend for the crime caper costarring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy drew $4 million from some 2,500 playdates in 45 markets.

Premiering No. 1 in Italy via Medusa Film was Woody Allen’s comedy Midnight In Paris. Opening round at some 400 screens drew an estimated $2.8 million.

Opening No.3 in France was Gaumont’s release of Les Lyonnais (A Gang Story), a French gangster saga based on the autobiography of a famous 1970’s bank robber. Directed by cop turned cineaste Olivier Marchal, the action drama drew and estimated $3 million from 425 screens.

In Spain, Universal released Fuga De Cerebros 2 (Brain Drain 2), Antenna 3 Films’ sequel to its 2009 romantic comedy about a dim-witted high schooler’s crush on the brightest girl in the class. The Spanish-language title opened No. 3 in the market, grossing $2.3 million from 345 situations, the second biggest opening of a local language film in Spain this year.

Universal also opened Morgan Creek’s remake of The Thing in the U.K. where is finished No. 6 in the markets, grossing $760,000 at 304 situations. Universal’s cume for the horror film update stands at $7.7 million. (The studio is handling distribution in 28 overseas territories on Morgan Creek’s behalf.)

Other international cumes: Disney’s The Muppets, $4 million (from three markets); Universal’s A Dangerous Method, $4.8 million; Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, $306.1 million; Universal’s Johnny English Reborn, $152.5 million; DreamWorks/Disney’s The Help, $31.5 million; Fox’s You Are The Apple Of My Eye, $24.1 million; and Disney’s The Lion King 3D, $68.8 million."

Those numbers for Puss are impressive, it seems to be headed for a very healthy OS run. I think it will cross $500m WW total at this rate and there is a chance to overtake Smurfs and Cars 2.

Yep Puss still has to open in quite a few markets with holidays supporting it. $400m OS looks achievable and more probable at this time, its holds are also quite good in most of the markets it has been released.

Shrek finished with $25m in Summer and Puss will have holiday boost which makes me think it can get $50m from Germany itself. Infact all those 16 markets it should have good legs, the existing ones are also holding well but since there will be new entries there and this will be older, I don't expect big holds there.

The holidays have just begun so I think there is a good chance for BD1 to cross NM in overseas markets...though WW total might be close

I think that is a solid result, and I am quite certain BD2 will likely end up near 500 million overseas due to 3D.

Also impressive as Reel Steel and In Time will hit 200 million and 100 million overseas respectively.

It should be noted that on Tuesday or Wednesday French Megablockbuster INTOUCHABLES will become the tenth biggest hit of all-time (actually since World War II) by admissions... (14m and counting). It is pretty certain that the dramedy will rise at least to No. 3 behind TITANIC (20.76m) and WELCOME TO THE STICKS (20.48m) and still has a chance to beat both...

"Apparently full of Christmas cheer, Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol grossed $43 million overseas, down nearly 40% from its opening launch last weekend but more than enough to seize the No. 1 box office spot for the second straight stanza.

The high-octane action sequel starring Tom Cruise introduced itself to the foreign circuit on Dec. 14, and opened well over the Christmas holiday in Brazil and Mexico (bowing to $2.75 million and $2.5 million, respectively, ranking dominant No. 1 in each). First place finishes in second weekends in Japan and in South Korea were also recorded with market cumes reaching $24 million and $24.5 million, respectively.

Paramount said Monday that Ghost Protocol’s foreign gross total stands at $140 million. The film is expected to roll up $201 million in total box office by year’s end.

As of Friday, the film’s cume was $105 million. Ghost Protocol is one of several titles that have propelled Paramount to estimated 2011 offshore box office of $3.19 billion – a whopping 60% increase from 2010’s comparable figure, “setting both a record for our studio and indeed any studio,” said Anthony Marcoly, Paramount Pictures International – Theatrical president.

New to the foreign circuit on the weekend was Sony’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, director David Fincher’s edition of the Swedish thriller starring newcomer Rooney Mara, which opened in five Scandinavian markets for an estimated $1.6 million elicited from 480 screens. Sweden was tops with $950,000 grossed at 194 screens.

Another overseas opening was 20th Century Fox’s We Bought A Zoo, director Cameron Crowe’s family drama costarring Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Thomas Haden Church. Debut round at 687 situations in six markets drew $1.1 million. Also from Fox came newcomer The Darkest Hour, a Russia-set sci/fi-horror outing about alien invaders. Premier run drew $3.5 million from 1,239 situations in Russia, Ukraine, Hungary and Latvia.

Also well surpassing the $200-million mark is DreamWorks Animation’s Puss In Boots, the 3D animation spinoff of Shrek with Antonio Banderas voicing the principal role of the dashing, sword-fighting feline. Distributor Paramount puts the film’s total foreign box office at $223 million thanks to a $17 million Christmas weekend take.

Warner Bros. estimated that Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows generated $22.3 million in 25 offshore markets. International gross total comes to $46.1 million.

Director Guy Ritchie’s sequel costarring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law continues strongly in the U.K. where Friday’s gross came to $1.4 million) and Italy, vying for the No. 1 box office position in each. A Germany opens looks auspicious with a Friday tally of $897,000 from 636 sites.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked grossed an estimated $20.1 million from 5,677 venues in 52 markets. Foreign box office total for the third installment of Fox’s computer animation franchise about singing chipmunks stands at $41.3 million.

Also vying for the top market spot in its seventh U.K.round ($4.1 million drawn from 835 locations) was Sony’s Arthur Christmas, which is capitalizing on the season with an overall estimate of $9.7 million collected from 5,925 situations in 74 markets. Overseas cume for the Aardman Animation 3D outing about squabbling Santas comes to an estimated $90 million.

Expected to hold the No. 1 France position – although the market’s Chip-Wrecked opening is posing formidable competition – is Gaumont’s release of Intouchables, the local-language comedy sensation, which looks to collect $4.8 million in its eighth round at 829 screens.
