 Re: Best Picture 2011
All I'm saying is don't underestimate how strong The Help, Moneyball and Midnight in Paris are for different reasons and that if you're looking to take one of them out to make room for The Artist/Descendants/Hugo if there's only 5 noms, Hugo isn't a write-in cause the critics love it and it has techs. How many times have we overrated the importance of the critics circles in making something a stone cold lock? A lot. Hugo was not considered an Oscar movie a month ago so it's made quite a large leap over that time
My prediction however is that we get 6-8 noms and the top 6 players all get in

No way Refn gets recognized, but it doesn't get into Picture. He's largely unknown in America.

With more than five spots for Picture, there is no director getting nominated, but his film being snubbed. Not happening.

Call me crazy but I'm really starting to get the feeling that The Help could win this.

God, I hope not. It's almost guaranteed to be the worst nominee, unless J. Edgar or My Week with Marilyn sneak in.

 Re: Best Picture 2011
Near as I can tell, we're down to, at most, 8 nominees:
Moneyball Hugo Midnight In Paris The Help The Artist The Descendants War Horse Tree of Life
Your nominees are going to come from this list. Hopefully not all eight...that's too many. Tree of Life and Midnight in Paris are most vulnerable, maybe Moneyball.
I don't buy that The Help can win. This is still The Artist's to lost.

I don't think Midnight in Paris is really vulnerable.

 Re: Best Picture 2011
Could be. They haven't been so enamored of Woody lately (remember the VCB screenplay snub?) and the movie just isn't a contender in many categories. Could get lost in the shuffle

Could get lost in the shuffle Indeed, but it is a tremendous financial hit for Allen and it had some of the strongest WoM of all movies last year. Moreover, the SAG Ensemble nom speaks for itself too.

 Re: Best Picture 2011
If Fincher is recognized by the DGA, is it safe to say Dragon Tattoo is in? It's scored with the National Board of Review, the PGA, and the WGA.

 Re: Best Picture 2011
Considering DGA is used to be the best predictor of BP lineup in the 5 nominees days, I'd say definitely since it's even easier to get into BP now.

 Re: Best Picture 2011
Feels like The Artist, The Help, the Descendants, Hugo, Moneyball, Midnight in Paris get in and War Horse, Bridesmaids and Dragon Tattoo fill out the remaining spots, depending on how many. I'll say the first 6, War Horse and Bridesmaids for 8 nominees atm
Still wish it was 5 noms. I'd be predicting a Hugo snub while War Horse or Midnight in Paris replaces it as the crap your pants moment of nomination day. Still think Hugo is the lock that isn't if there's one. If say War Horse rides Spielberg, old voters and looking like an Oscar movie (like a combination of Munich and The Reader's noms), and Bridesmaids is just an unstoppable train due to getting a hell lot of "I have to put it #1 if I want it to get in" voting/crushing the female voter demo, that makes 8 including the big 6. Could lead to one in that group being in danger and I see the Artist, The Descendants, Moneyball, and The Help as locks. Moneyball is the least exciting of those 4, but it's this year's Michael Clayton, more of a write in than anyone wants it to be

 Re: Best Picture 2011
It would be taking the piss if Bridesmaids makes it in if there are less than 8 nominees.

Hating on Bridesmaids should be grounds for imprisonment.

 Re: Best Picture 2011
IMO, if you wouldn't dream of nominating a film for Best Director, it has no place in Best Picture.
Sorry, Bridesmaids.

 Re: Best Picture 2011
I think if I had to pick a film at this moment to pull a King's Speech/Crash on The Artist's Social Network/Brokeback.. it'd be Midnight in Paris

 Re: Best Picture 2011
I have no real concrete case for this, but I still feel The Help is better positioned to "Crash" The Artist than Midnight in Paris. It'll get more nominations overall (even if it misses Director), it has "weightier themes," it has much bigger box office, etc.
