I agree, this category has passed it's prime. - - back in the day, movie songs were also pop hits that you heard in high rotation on the radio - - I can still sing many, many past Oscar nominated songs just by seeing their title (and they weren't just from Musicals - - they worked songs into almost every movie, often through a featured montage or some such device).
This year, Hello Hello from Gnomeo and Juliet is the only one I can still remember the tune to.

This Chris Cornell song from Machine Gun Preacher is very nice. Hope it's nominated, but I doubt it will be. Same goes for the song by the National from Win Win.
