I really don't get Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy shut-outs
Okay, it has become clear a while ago that this is probably not a contender to win Best Picture...but it was still always expected to be a reasonable player in the race.
It has so much going for it:
- Huge appeal to the British in the industry
- Great cast
- Really good reviews (88/100 at Metacritic currently, better than Moneyball, The Artist or Hugo)
- Gary Oldman having never been even NOMINATED before
- The director coming off one of the most acclaimed foreign films in years
- The movie being an adaptation of one of the most well-known spy novels ever
- Should be strong in the techsn department too, the cinematography and art direction are top notch
But so far:
- ZERO SAG nominations - ZERO BFCA nominations - Barely appearing at ANY critics awards - Not even in the NBR Top 10 of the year
Seriously, this is extremely weird, IMO. J. Edgar has fared far better so far.

I haven't seen it yet (this weekend), but I'm hearing lots of people saying, "Oh, I love Gary Oldman and Colin Firth, and the dense '70s London bureaucratic atmosphere kicks ass, but...I was so, so, so confused by this movie." I'm assuming it's proving too esoteric and quiet for wide appeal.
You could say much the same for A Dangerous Method, which is showing up nowhere despite a fancy pedigree, very good to great reviews, being based on a true story, etc.

But TTSS is based on a really really popular novel, the reviews are still better than A Dangerous Method's and it'll end up a much bigger financial success.
And let's be honest you might be making this comparison now, but while many have stopped predicting A Dangerous Method for much, this hasn't happened to TTSS. It's a really weird thing going on and when you see the film you (probably) will agree. And confusing or not, I am not talking Picture or Screenplay. How to explain the absence in acting or techs? I mean Oldman's turn is REALLY subtle and stuff, yes, but to not pop up almost anywhere? And no ensemble noms either? Pfft.

The Globes did nothing to turn the train around. Oldman snubbed again. I don't even know if HUGE support from BAFTA will do any good at this point.

Saw it. It's amazing. Deserves a boatload of nominations, including Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor (Cumberbatch), Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and several techs.
But it's definitely going to be more divisive with audiences than the reviews suggest. It's going to bewilder a lot of people with its complexity and icy minimalism.

No explicit gay sex, though.

It needs to be BIG at the BAFTAs if any chance is supposed to be left for it to get back into the race. Anything less than noms for Picture/Director/Screenplay/Actor and 4-5 techs...and it's dead in the water.

Re: I really don't get Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy shut-out
Good luck to this movie this morning. I hope it scores a few nominations, maybe for its art direction and cinematography. Or original score. And, of course, a surprise Oldman nod would be deserved, but I fear it would be at the expense of Fassbender rather than DiCaprio.
