Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Pokemon News
Pokémon the Movie: Black — Victini and Zekrom, one of this year's two films in the Pokémon anime franchise, will play in more than 300 American theaters during the December 3-4 weekend. The digital theatrical distributor Cinedigm will handle the limited two-day engagement of the film, which is known as Gekijōban Pocket Monster Best Wishes! Victini to Kuroki Eiyū Zekrom in Japan.
In addition, the second 2011 film, Pokémon the Movie: White — Victini and Reshiram (Gekijōban Pocket Monster Best Wishes! Victini to Shiroki Eiyū Reshiram), will also debut in December. According to The Pokémon Company, details of the second film's launch "will be coming soon."
This year's two Pokémon films have collectively grossed over $53 million in Japan since they opened there on July 16. The newest Pokémon television series, Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes!, has been airing in Japan since last year.
I believe they'll be the first Pokemon films to receive a theatrical release (even if it's really limited) in America since the fifth film almost 10 years ago.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Pokemon Coming To U.S Theaters
Unfair: the answer performed 106.4% better than the opening weekend of Bar Detective, and 14.3% better than opening of God's Medical Record.
THR actually reported on Unfair, having it at $3 million. But I'm pretty certain that's too low because $3 million would only be 230 million yen or so, and the two comparisons above suggests 260-280,000 admissions for 325-350 million yen ($4.3-4.5 million). THR may have made an error by translating 300 million yen as 3 million dollars.
I also forgot to mention that Monday is a Holiday, Marine/Ocean Day, so grosses this weekend could be slightly deflated with some choosing Monday as their movie day.

Good opening for Unfair 2. Using an average multiplier of past openers this holiday weekend, the film should achieve at least 2 billion yen ($26 million). I'm thinking 2.2/2.3 billion yen (about $30 million).
Also a good opening for Battle Los Angeles. The film (along with Sanctum) were supposed to open last Spring, but their releases were delayed 6 months due to the Earthquake. With some average WOM, it may reach 1 billion yen ($13 million).
Spy Kids 4D is really surprising. The gross is largely due to higher ticket prices, but the opening is solid nonetheless. Looks good for about 600 million yen (almost $8 million).
Decent start for Sanctum, pretty much as expected. It's also looking at 600 million yen or so.
Another surprise this weekend was The Man From Nowhere. Having played on just 77 screens, the pic managed a top 10 ranking. It's probably heading for 250 million yen ($3 million+).

Key:
BOLD = Final Total.
Note 1 - If a film is not in bold and doesn't have days in release (e.g. Unstoppable), it means tracking for that film ended and the total listed isn't final yet. The totals for those films are likely to increase <1% when the final total is released.
Highlights:
From Kokuriko Hill will remain on 300+ screens (opened on 457, currently playing on 351) for at least 2 more months, with Studio Ghibli re-issuing redesigned move poster to theaters, etc., to attract more viewers. More details HERE.
It's going to have some really strong late legs heading toward 2012, so look for it to steadily add to it's total each week despite being in release for over 2 months now.
Harry Potter 7.2 surpassed HP5's 9.4 billion yen total to become the 5th highest grossing film in the franchise in yen (it's 3rd in USD, however).
Pokemon 14 and Transformers 3 are in a very tight race for the 5th biggest grosser of 2011 spot.
Cars 2 has really stalled, and it'd be a shame if it barely misses 3 billion yen.
God's Medical Record jumps 7 spots on the chart.
Films nearing 1 billion yen (900 million yen+): One Life (905 million yen) [25 Days in Release] Gokaiger Goseiger Super Sentai 199 Hero Great Battle (~900 million) What If a Female Manager of a High School Baseball Team Read Drunker's "Management"? (~900 million) Nintama Rantarou Live Action Movie! (~935 million)

I'd say, all things considered, Harry Potter's performance is quite great.

Both films did very well.
Harry Potter broke it's decade long decline in gross and admissions, and Transformers 3 edged out the original to become top grossing film in it's franchise (second in admissions).

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
September 23-25, 2011 Weekend Forecast
1 (-) Moteki (Toho), NEW 2 (1) Unfair: the answer (Toho), Week 2 3 (2) Battle Los Angeles (Toho-Towa), Week 2 4 (3) Bar Detective (TOEI), Week 3 5 (-) Second Virgin (Shochiku), NEW 6 (6) One Life (Avex Entertainment), Week 4 7 (5) God's Medical Record (Toho), Week 5 8 (4) Spy Kids 4D (Shochiku), Week 2 9 (-) We Cannot Rebuild the World, But We Wanna Build a School in Cambodia (TOEI), NEW 10 (7) Sanctum (Toho-Towa), Week 2
It's a long weekend, but the grosses and rankings are for the 24th and 25th only.
Moteki is tracking 9% ahead of Paco and the Magical Book according to distributor Toho on opening day. http://eiga.com/news/20110923/9/
Paco opened with 305 million yen in September 2008 for comparison, and Moteki should see a similar, maybe slightly higher, opening ($4 million+ in USD). Paco also went on to finish with 2.36 billion yen ($31 million today), which would be a great finish for Moteki and even better if it finished higher. The fall needed a breakout like this. Trailer below.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
Friday was Shūbun no Hi (Autumnal Equinox Day), so this week's films opened early.
Openers, Vs. Unfair: the answer last Saturday, opening day, figure (Approx. 125,000 admissions for 165 million yen ($2.2 million)):
Moteki (98.9%) We Can't Rebuild the World, But We Wanna Build a School in Cambodia (27.1%) Second Virgin (36.2%)
Unfair 2 grossed 482 million yen ($6.3 million) on 363,000 admissions over it's first three days in release, and below are the rough 3-Day estimates (Fri-Sun) for the openers based on the usual data for Friday:
Moteki - 340-360,000 admissions for 420-440 million yen ($5.5-5.8 million). We Can't Rebuild... - 100-110,000 admissions for 125-145 million yen ($1.6-1.9 million). Second Virgin - 130-140,000 admissions for 160-180 million yen ($2-2.3 million).
Holdovers, Decreases Vs. Last Saturday's Figures
Unfair: the answer (-17.5%) Battle Los Angeles (-52.1%) Sanctum (-59.5%) Spy Kids 4D (-3.1%) The Man From Nowhere (-39.4%) Bar Detective (-15.7%) One Life (-34.7%) Winnie the Pooh (-18.7%) God's Medical Record (-16.4%) -Ranking based on release date (most recent to oldest)
Films targeting kids/families, and females, benefited the most from the Holiday.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
Eiga.com released the Top 10 Most Attended Films of the Year (as of 9/21) yesterday, but I was too busy to post it. So here we go,
Top 10 Most Attended Films of 2011 (Box Office Year)
July, 1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Warner Bros.) 6,800,721 (8.49x) May, 2. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Walt Disney) 6,000,326 (7.76x) Nov., 3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (Warner Bros.) 5,584,042 (7.28x) July, 4. Pokemon the Movie: Best Wishes (Toho) 4,032,548 (7.56x) July, 5. From Kokuriko Hill (Toho) 3,414,586 (11.54x) Dec., 6. Space Battleship Yamato (Toho) 3,303,710 (8.01x) Feb., 7. Gantz (Toho) 2,796,132 (6.15x) July, 8. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Paramount) 2,754,829 (7.57x) April, 9. Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence (Toho) 2,647,154 (5.84x) Mar., 10. SP: The Motion Picture - The Final Episode (Toho) 2,625,416 (11.70x)
Disney must have really wanted On Stranger Tides to sell 6m tickets because the film's last update (middle of August I think) had it about 100,000 shy of the milestone with it only playing on a handful of screens.
Films in italics are still in release. I also included the films' multipliers beside their admissions from their opening weekends (2 Days).
“Gods are great ... but the heart is greater. For it is from our hearts they come, and to our hearts they shall return.” “We were like gods at the dawning of the world, & our joy was so bright we could see nothing else but the other.” “There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” “You have to pretend you get an endgame. Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
Saturday Data fron the usual locations:
Openers, Percentages Vs God's Medical Record's Opening Day Admissions.
Moteki (82.5%) ~109,000 admissions -> 130-135 million yen ($1.8 million) Second Virgin (23.4%) ~31,000 admissions -> 35-40 million yen ($500,000) We Can't Rebuild the World, But We Wanna Build a School in Cambodia (31.5%) ~41,000 admissions -> 45-50 million yen ($600,000)
Combined with Friday's Opening Day estimate of approx. 165 million yen ($2.1 million), Moteki is near 300 million yen ($3.9 million) after two days in release, and is still on track for over 300,000 admissions; 400 million yen ($5.2 million) for the three day weekend. Moteki is playing on 274 screens.
Second Virgin appears to be a bit frontloaded with that number. It's likely to miss 100,000 admissions; 125 million yen ($1.6 million) over the three day weekend.
We Can't Rebuild... behaved the opposite of Second Virgin's second day in release, and will probably even beat it over the weekend. I can't see it missing 100,000 admissions now, resulting in perhaps 150 million yen (near $2 million) over the three day weekend. Nice little overperformance here.
Holdovers Decreases Vs. Last Saturday Figures
Unfair: the answer (-30.4%) Battle Los Angeles (-54.4%) Sanctum (-63.5%) Spy Kids 4D (-33.5%) The Man From Nowhere (-47.1%) Bar Detective (-33.9%) One Life (-50.1%) Winnie the Pooh (-50.3%) God's Medical Record (-39.9%) -rankings based on weeks in release (most recent to oldest)
Some hefty drops (Sanctum could be the first film this year to drop over 60% it's second weekend), but not too surprising with the Holidays this past week. Monday was Marine/Ocean Day and with Friday being Autumnal Equinox Day, the drops should be expected.
Solid number for Unfair: the answer, though. It should stay above 200 million yen ($2.6 million) in it's second weekend, and with the boost from the Holidays, it looks to clear 1 billion yen ($13 million) on Sunday, only it's 9th day in release.
Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Saturday Data
It would appear Fast Fivecould rank this weekend on previews alone. It's release date isn't until October 1st, but it charted at both Warner (3rd), and Shikoku (3rd) Cinemas. It failed to chart at Toho or Sunshine Cinemas, but I doubt they had previews.
The last two films I remember charting so high on only previews were Resident Evil 4 and Inception last year. But despite doing well enough to rank in the Top 10, the previews were included in the following week's opening numbers. That's most likely what will happen with Fast Five, so expect a strong opening next weekend.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Rankings
September 24-25, 2011 Weekend Admission Ranking
1 (1) Unfair: the answer (Toho) Week 2 2 (-) Moteki (Toho) NEW 3 (3) Bar Detective (TOEI) Week 3 4 (2) Battle: Los Angeles (Toho-Towa) Week 2 5 (6) Spy Kids 4D (Shochiku) Week 2 6 (4) God's Medical Record (Toho) Week 5 7 (-) Second Virgin (Shochiku) NEW 8 (5) One Life (Avex Entertainment) Week 4 9 (-) We Can't Rebuild the World, But We Wanna Build a School in Cambodia (TOEI) NEW 10 (7) Sanctum (Toho-Towa) Week 2
Pretty incredible hold for Unfair 2. It exceeded 1 billion yen ($13 million) already, so 2 billion yen ($26 million) is a sure thing now. With the standard 2.2 multiplier from a film's two week total, Unfair 2 is looking at 2.3 billion yen ($30 million).
Moteki had a great start with 176,525 admissions; 245,780,400 yen ($3.2 million) for the 2-Day weekend (Sat and Sun.), and with Friday included, the 3-Day cume 388,968,700 yen ($5.1 million) with 284,159 admissions on 274 screens ($18,600 psa).
A slightly lower opening than data was suggesting (400 million yen 3-Day), though 2 billion yen ($26 million) is still in play.
Second Virgin opened to 52,158,400 yen ($685,000) with 41,311 admissions for the 2-Day weekend, bringing it's 3-Day total to 87,238,600 yen ($1.1 million) with 69,721 admissions.
We Can't Rebuild... opened to 50,783,900 yen ($665,000) with 36,482 admissions for the 2-Day weekend, bringing it's 3-Day total to 76,735,200 yen ($1 million) with 56,208 admissions.

Highlights:
Unfair 2 and One Life (United Kingdom) debut on the charts.
That makes 27 Japanese films and 18 Imported films that have grossed over 1 billion yen this year. Last year, 29 Japanese films and 19 Imported films grossed over 1 billion yen, so 2011 is going to beat that before Dec. 1st.
God's Medical Record moves up 3 more positions this week.
Transformers 3 and Pokemon 14 are estimated to be tied in gross, and this will probably be the last week both films are tracked.
Cars 2 is barely making anything now, and this will probably be the last week it's tracked, too. It's so close to 3 billion yen I can't see it not making it eventually.
Films nearing 1 billion yen (900 million yen+): Gokaiger Goseiger Super Sentai 199 Hero Great Battle (~900 million) What If a Female Manager of a High School Baseball Team Read Drunker's "Management"? (~900 million) Nintama Rantarou Live Action Movie! (~935 million)

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Ranking
It's reported that Moteki edged out Unfair 2 to place 1st this weekend in gross. There have been several split winners (one wins by admissions, another by gross) this year I've realized.

A really good weekend for some, not so for others.
Moteki begins it's run with a great debut on top.
Unfair 2 had a spectacular second weekend clearing 1 billion yen in 9 days.
Spy Kids 4D, Bar Detective, and God's Medical Record also did really well this weekend.
The other half of the Top 10 didn't fare too well.
Second Virgin opened with mediocre/disappointing results, and We Can't Rebuild... just met expectations.
Battle Los Angeles and Sanctum both dropped almost 60%. Sanctum actually had the second biggest second weekend decline this year for a wide release.
And despite good reviews, One Life continues to struggle dropping nearly 50% in it's fourth weekend. It did clear 1 billion yen this weekend, a solid achievement, but it's going to fall short of 1.5 billion yen, which given the opening weekend, seemed like a sure thing.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Results
Also, Fast Five grossed an estimated 2億8332万0300円 ($3.68 million) on previews alone from the 23rd-25th. The weekend itself would have been about 200 million yen ($2.60 million), enough for a third place ranking this weekend.
That's really strong, and all of it will be included with the film's opening this coming weekend I believe.

October 1-2, 2011 Weekend Forecast
1 (-) Fast Five (Toho-Towa) NEW 2 (1) Moteki (Toho) Week 2 3 (2) Unfair: the answer (Toho) Week 3 4 (-) Hayabusa (Fox) NEW 5 (-) Dog X Police (Toho) NEW 6 (3) Bar Detective (TOEI) Week 4 7 (4) Spy Kids 4D (Shochiku) Week 3 8 (6) Battle: Los Angeles (Toho-Towa) Week 3 9 (-) Final Destination 5 (Warner Bros.) NEW 10 (6) God's Medical Record (Toho) Week 6
With last week's previews for Fast Five most likely being included into it's opening weekend, it'll easily take the weekend crown. Last weeks previews were also bigger than the opening weekends of the previous two Fast and Furious films, so expect Fast Five to become the biggest in the franchise No previous film has reached 1 billion yen ($12/13 million).
A few other projected totals after this weekend: Unfair 2 should be near 1.5 billion yen ($19 million), God's Medical Record - 1.8 billion yen ($23 million), Bar Detective - 950+ million yen ($12 million). Bar Detective should beat Moteki to 1 billion yen first to become the 28th Japanese film to reach the milestone this year; 46th Overall film.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
THR has Fast Five grossing $6.6 million (about 510 million yen) this weekend. That figure would include last weeks previews of 283 million yen ($3.7 million).
Breakdown: Previews (last Fri.-Sun) - 283 million yen ($3.7 million) Opening Weekend (Sat.-Sun) - 227 million yen ($2.9 million), *estimate
Opening Weekend + Previews is already more than 50% of what any previous Fast and Furious film grossed in total, and if the 510 million yen gross is accurate, Fast Five will finish with 1.5/1.6 billion yen (about $20 million), double any other Fast and Furious film.
