Screen Counts and Crowd Reports Sept. 9-11th
I saw a sneak preview of Warrior tonight. It was so much better than I was expecting, and I liked it a lot more than I liked The Fighter last year, which is saying a lot.
The storyline of the two brothers is what really gives the film heart, and Nick Nolte is a shoe in for a best supporting actor nomination.
I'm not sure how strong it will open, but it should have great legs....

1. The Help - 20% of Fandango Sale 2. Contagion - 14% of Fandango Sale 3. The Debt - 7% of Fandango Sale 4. Crazy Stupid Love - 6% of Fandango Sale 5. Rise of the Planet of the Apes - 5%
Yep - Help, CSL, Apes as usual. At least an opener made the list for once.

How positive of a sign is that for Contagion?

I think that's a positive sign for Contagion, could have been better but it is still good.

And notfabio also said Bucky was in 14th place as of the time he posted.

If that's indicative of everywhere Contagion could do $10M opening day or so.

Saw the Help at the Cinema City in Anaheim. 11:10 am 50 people in the theater (still amazing for a movie in it's 4th weekend, and strange thing is, it is still playing in the biggest theater).
The movie was excellent.

Can Creature beat the $263,941 Transylmania debuted to in 1,007 theaters? Or at least beat that movie's PSA of $262? I'd say no, but would be a bit impressed if it did.
A friend went to see it and just text me that there was only one other couple there.

Variety is saying Contagion will do $18-20M for the weekend, The Help will do $10M, and Warrior will do $7-8M.

I don't really understand why both Variety and THR try to compete with Nikki in being the first to report the Friday/weekend projections. They have higher prestige, but now they're lowering themselves to DH's level.

Contagion 8:30 show, 400-seat theater, sold out.
Trailers I Don't Know How She Does It The Thing Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Movie Contagion is frightening precisely because of its low-key approach. Unlike past pandemic stories which have emphasized the over-the-top or macabre, this film is entirely grounded in a subtle and realistic approach. It's a "procedural" film, to be sure, and while making everything more melodramatic has certainly been done in the past with this kind of movie, Steven Soderbergh's method works quite well. Infectious diseases turning people into zombies might be entertaining, but it's not as scary as a simple cough or a hand in a jar of peanuts. Soderbergh expertly amps up the tension even with barely any action or graphic violence. The cast is stellar, and many of the actors manage to humanize their characters: I was particularly a fan of the performances from Kate Winslet and Jennifer Ehle, although everyone is quite good. The movie is ambitious, and could maybe have used a longer running time to flesh out some of its ideas more. But, in the end, Contagion is a harrowing look at what is not...but could be. Wash your hands. B+
