Post Closest Box Office Runs with Same Date Debut
The Source Code vs. Insidious thread reminded me. Those 2 movies have had a remarkably close run for opening on the same date, and concurrently Something Borrowed and Jumping the Broom have as well. Not just in the end, but the daily cumes have been very consistently close from the start.

Does anyone know of any other close simultaneous runs right off hand? I'll research more if/when I have time.

Open Date: May 6, 2011
Something Borrowed: $37,680,356 (as of 6/13/11)
Jumping the Broom: $36,745,475 (as of 6/13/11)
Average daily % difference in cume: 2.4%

Open Date: April 1, 2011
Source Code: $54,162,132 (as of 6/12/11)
Insidious: $53,235,901 (as of 6/12/11)
*Average daily % difference in cume: 2.6%

Open Date: June 21, 2002
Lilo and Stitch: $138,984,852 (as of 8/15/02)
Minority Report: $128,551,315 (as of 8/15/02)
Average daily % difference in cume: 6.8%

* calculated as daily abs. diff. in cume as a percent of the larger of the two totals.

The only other one that comes to my mind right off is Lilo & Stitch vs. Minority Report because they had such close opening weekends on the same weekend. After the weekend, Lilo naturally started pulling ahead but they still stayed fairly close.

I'll add any race up to the point where dailies for both are known. I'll consider it close enough if the daily cumes averaged w/in 10% of each other.

While they might fit exactly in their runs, The Smurfs and Cowboy and Aliens ended up quite close in their OW though Smurfs will end with $20m-$30m lead in the end.

Wedding Crashers and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ended up pretty close, despite the former opening over $20m less.

Sherlock Holmes and Alvin 2 though their dailies are messed up.

Prince of Persia and SATC2 are close as well I think.

Austin Powers and Breakdown both opened the same day in early May 1997. IIRC both made $50-$53m. Both were reasonably leggy.

Just noticed while writing my Feb article that Just Go With It and Gnomeo and Juliet will surely fall in this category. GAJ started $5m less in opening but beat JGWI after that every weekend marginally till MNM released. Both of them ended with $3m or so difference in the end.
