Quote:
In the Line of Fire is a 1993 American thriller film about a psychopath who attempts to assassinate the President of the United States and the Secret Service agent who tracks him. The film was directed by Wolfgang Petersen and stars Clint Eastwood as Agent Frank Horrigan and John Malkovich as assassin Mitch Leary.

Eastwood's character is the sole active-duty Secret Service agent remaining from the detail guarding John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas, at the time of his assassination in 1963. Rene Russo, Dylan McDermott, Gary Cole, John Mahoney, and Fred Thompson also star. The film was co-produced by Columbia Pictures and Castle Rock Entertainment, with Columbia handling distribution. It is also notable for being the last film in which Eastwood starred that he did not also direct. Eastwood and Petersen also originally offered the role of Leary to Robert De Niro, who turned it down due to scheduling conflicts with A Bronx Tale.

Thrilling stuff. Clint is Clint and Malkovich is a terrific villain. Though it's amusing how Clint's love interests seem to get younger and younger with each film; in that way, he prefigures Sandler a bit.

Putrid writing.

Malkovich deserves his nom but otherwise it's a poor movie.

No chemistry between the leads, completely unbelievable in every sense that Eastwood would still be even considered for assignment and after his debacles too, no compassion for the dead partner, typical Hollywood impossible hero saves the day bullshit and typical Hollywood stupid as a brick villain.

D-

edit: And after Malkovich saves Eastwood too, with the latter having no guts to actually sacrifice himself. Hollywood crap. This was 1993 as well, so the blockbuster hasn't changed.

:funny: Your review is the true definition of an EPIC FAIL.. This is one of the best movies ever made right down to the cast and plot..

Sorry BK, cant agree.

I loved this film back in 1993 and to my own surprise it held up when I saw it again just recently. Malkovich is brilliant.

Hey Gez, I don't disagree Malkovich is brilliant but I just plain disliked the ending in the elevator. Eastwood should have found a subtler way to relay his position because being so obvious, and knowing what the FBI/SS/CIA are capable of, Malkovich wouldn't have reacted by just saying "Why you little" and instead of shooting Clint, he tries to hit him.

Now I cannot recall what or which movies I've seen with this smart villain stringing theme or possible TV series, so I also would not be able to appreciate if "In the Line of Fire" did it first. As, anything though, you're only as good as you hold up, and it may have been good then for its novelty and good now for nostalgia but I believe I've seen this script/story played out better with more charismatic and likeable leads without such contrived endings.

I recently remonstrated against Die Hard's stupid-villain syndrome and that may have been typical Hollywood fanfare at the time but I personally realized that kind of suspension of disbelief no longer works for me.
