Dwarfs got kicked out of their halls in the Lonely Mountain by the dragon Smaug (human settlements nearby were also among the casualties, the humans that got spared have to deal with the dragon every since - every once in a while he snatches himself a virgin for breakfast or so it is said). A bunch of the dwarfs decide to reclaim their homes and stolen treasures. Since it's more of a stealth operation Gandalf suggested taking Bilbo with them as the company's burglar. Adventures ensue. Parallel to that, there's also some dealings with Sauron (his rise to power) and we find out how Bilbo finds the One Ring (insert ominous voices). That's pretty much it in a nutshell. No babes kicking ass in the book but PJ might have changed that with casting Evangeline Lilly (love that name) as an elf chick. _________________
