Live and Let Die is the eighth spy film in the James Bond series, and the first to star Roger Moore as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond. The film was produced by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman. Although the producers had wanted Sean Connery to return after his role in the previous Bond film Diamonds Are Forever, he declined, sparking a search for a new actor to play James Bond. Roger Moore was signed for the lead role.

The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Ian Fleming. In the film, a Harlem drug lord known as Mr. Big plans to distribute two tons of heroin free to put rival drug barons out of business. Mr. Big, however, is revealed to be the disguised alter ego of Dr. Kananga, a corrupt Caribbean dictator, who rules San Monique, the fictional island where the heroin poppies are secretly farmed. Bond is investigating the death of three British agents, leading him to Kananga, where he is soon trapped in a world of gangsters and voodoo as he fights to put a stop to the drug baron's scheme.

Live and Let Die was released during the height of the blaxploitation era, and many blaxploitation archetypes and cliché are depicted such as afro hairstyles, derogatory racial epithets ("honky"), black gangsters, and "pimpmobiles". It departs from the former plots of the James Bond films about megalomaniac super-villains, and instead focuses on drug trafficking, depicted primarily in blaxploitation films. It is set in African American cultural centres such as Harlem and New Orleans, as well as the Caribbean Islands. It was also the first James Bond film featuring an African American Bond girl to be romantically involved with 007, Rosie Carver, who was played by Gloria Hendry. Despite mixed reviews the film was a box office success and was nominated for an Academy Award.

I've seen every Bond film in theaters since this one. I was so young that I didn't even really know who Paul McCartney was, let alone that it was him doing the theme song. (still the best Bond theme song ever!)

Roger Moore doesn't get the credit for doing the impossible. He gave a performance that allowed Bond to live on past Connery, and he's the biggest reason it's lasted, because he showed it could be done. He didn't try to copy Connery, he was his own brand of Bond.

Best Song in the series, but a horrible music montage with it. Its a new generation of Bond despite him being older than Connery. Id give it a B

I love the score/theme. The scenery is always a treat and the New York scenes are fantastic. Moore did a very good job coming in. A sort of "new" Bond. Works very well.

[font=century gothic]To put it simply it's my favorite Bond film. It combines all of the elements that made the prior films great, and still manages to take chances. It's pretty much a blaxsploitation film and yet it still manages to work within the context of the film and the series.

Although Moore wasn't in his element yet as Bond (He found it in The Spy Who Loved Me), he's very good here. Much better than Connery in DAF. I also like that the villian is simple in terms of real world elements. He's a drug dealer who uses the cover of Voodoo as a brainwashing device. It works well.

Another thing I enjoyed was the scored by George Martin. He kind of overdoes it with the Bond theme at points, but I think that was only to remind people that this was in fact a Bond film, despite the fact that Connery is no longer involved with the series. Besides, the Bond theme is a great theme, why not use it to the fullest extent possible? Another thing that I enjoyed was his chase theme.

And then there is Jane Seymour. We all know how great she looked in Wedding Crashers? Well she looks stunning here. She's vulnerable and yet manages to be her own character. She's the most beautiful and my favorite Bond girl to date.

It's solid enough, but I never liked Moore as Bond.

So it's no longer my favorite Bond film, but it's still pretty damn good. The script by Tom Mankiewicz was the main reason why I found Diamonds are Forever to be watchable and his script here is even better. Sure it marked the beginning of the endless Moore-isms like the endless quips and overall goofy attitude, but it works here because the story is goofy.

The entertainment value is also improved upon from DAF because there's actually entertainment to be found here. The movie has multiple car chases, a double decker bus chase, a boat chase, etc. and they're all well choreographed and shot.

It's a Bond blaxploitation movie. It's weird, it's goofy, it's fun, and it was a solid first outing for Roger Moore as 007.

I can't get over the inflatable death, this and Spy Who Loved me and For Your eyes Only are the only watchable ones of his era. I'm sticking with my B
