 Re: Gladiator
A film that shows the glory and ugliness of the Roman Empire at its zenith.
A very well made Sword and Sandle Epic and it saddens me that more films like these are not made. I like historical epics and some of the biggest and best films of all time are such films.
However this film suffers from having weak secondary characters however the battles and fighting are great.
Did anyone notice when Emperor Commodus came into Rome it was almost like when Hitler was coming into Berlin in a Triumph of the Will. Very strange!!!!
However, the way history was butchered in this film appalls me.
-Marcus Aurelius wanted to bring back the Republic!!! HAH!!! -Senator Gracchus was never a senator and he existed over 200 years before. -Why are given this idea that the Roman Empire returned to greatness after Commodus. After Commodus, the Roman Empire went in a long decline and faced a crisis for like almost 90 years and would have collapsed if it were not for Diocletan and Constantine. -Roman Cavalry charging Germanic tribes!!! Roman Cavalry was Rome's weak point.

 Re: Gladiator
Actually even though I find it a B+, it still deserve to win BP.
The other films were just blah...
* Chocolat * Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon * Erin Brockovich * Traffic
easily weaker then the Year Crash and Chicago won.

Gladiator is a piece of shit. It's offensively stupid. Worse than 300, in fact.

 Re: Gladiator
I remember initially back in the days there was a lot of hostility towards this film.
Today, people truly appreciate it for being the only great epic historical drama of this decade.
It really is the only great one this decade and will live long in cinema as the historical epic's of the 50's and 60's like Ben Hur.

 Re: Gladiator
I don't like it much, but, to be fair, I haven't seen it in about ten years. And all I remember is that Joaquin Phoenix was really evil.

The idea of one man changing an entire empire is a classic theme and its executed beautifully here. But to me, the violence of the film really shows a lot because I think the film shows the violent nature of men in battle as well as the desire of men to see violence. In many other swords-and-sandals films, those who are in battle are seen as the violent monsters but Gladiator I feel does a twist and kind of makes you feel that the crowd is the real monster. oh dear gawd.

 Re: Gladiator
I fucking love this movie. I don't even give a shit. Michael A can come at it all, "The film is simply entertainment for entertainment's sake. Ridley Scott can choose a tie in the morning, but he knoweth not what the tie meaneth." But it doesn't matter. Russell Crowe, built and growling and intense and in perfect form. Joaquin Phoenix lunging from shadows, being evil and crushing on his sister. Richard Harris as the ailing grand emperor. Everyone in the cast is just devouring the scenery and having a blast and digging into their roles. And there's beautiful cinematography and production design galore. Gladiator is perfect entertainment. Classic.

 Re: Gladiator
It does to me. Though, I admit, it was partly inspired by Ignatiy Vishnevetsky.

To me all the over-shot, melodramatic, hyperbolized filming is obnoxious and silly, but I can see how its beautiful and entertaining. However magnus' claims of "deep meaning" and "brilliant themes" in the movie, that I cannot agree with.

 Re: Gladiator
Well wow 5 years latter the hate for this film has finally subsided online
The film has creeped up the IMDB 250 and there is no doubt about it..
After 13 years and looking at the genre that is historical epics, there is not a shadow of a doubt that is the finest Historical epic of the Modern era and is now a classic film.

 Re: Gladiator
This instantly became my favorite film when I saw it the first time, probably became my most watched film and I saw it again last night. It's just a masterpiece that's never going to let me go I think. Love the film, a great spectacle and amazing score. So quotable too.
A+

 Re: Gladiator
Gladiator is an impressive production but lacks relatable and interesting characters to invest you in the story. Largely left me cold.

 Re: Gladiator
One of the best big budget films ever made. Crowe and Phoenix are perfect.
The runner ups for both roles were Mel Gibson and Jude Law. Both would have been perfection.
