Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Estimates
What is with that weekend in mid-July, all the big movies are opening there. And yet no foreign release is opening against I Am Number Four the week earlier.
And Thor opening against The Hangover 2 LOL....the Japan release schedule is so screwed. Don't they know anything about spacing out movies.

As odd as it looks, they'll all be able to co-exist just fine.
This isn't the first time Pokemon and Studio Ghibli open the same weekend (in fast, they do it all the time), and there is usually a big Hollywood film opening before or after them. Pokemon and Harry Potter have opened near each other in the past, too.
Last year had Bayside Shakedown 3, Toy Story 3, Pokemon, and Arrietty open within 14 days of each other and they all did great. This year just has Potter instead of Toy Story, and an extra Pokemon film basically. Transformers fills Inception's late July spot, too.

How do you think Cars 2 will do in Japan? I have no idea what the first one did, but unlike the non-Pixar animated films, the Japanese seem to embrace Pixar?

How is "From The Kokuriko Hill" going to do? Any big Japanese films coming out this summer besides Pokemon?

The first one grossed 2.23 billion yen.
And like you said, Japan likes Pixar, and 3D, so I'm confident Cars 2 will see a sizable increase over the original. Should do over 3 billion yen ($35m+).

Kokuriko Hill should do very well, and will finish not far from Potter. Arrietty grossed 9.25 billion yen last year, but I don't see Kokuriko Hill going that high because Goro Miyazaki is directing it. Tales from Earthsea is regarded as Ghibli's weakest work, and it recieved average legs in 2006 (still grossed 7.65 billion yen though).
Kokuriko Hill will probably see a smaller opening than Arrietty and Tales from Earthsea, but has a shot at better legs. Hayao Miyazaki wrote the film, so the studio kept a close watch over his son's second feature film. The film should do a minimum of 7 billion ($86 million) this Summer. The ceiling being 9 billion yen ($110 million).
Andalusia: Goddess of Retribution opens on June 25th. Do you remember Amalfi: Rewards of the Goddess back in 2009? Amalfi grossed 3.65 billion, and Andalusia is a sequel of sorts. So I expect a similar gross, maybe 4 billion ($45m+) since there isn't really any adult films in release this summer.

I haven't posted any non-box office news in a long time, and figured it's time to start again. The Gantz live-action movies have done very well this year, so it's not completely unrelated.
Top Selling Manga in Japan by Series (First Half of 2011)
The following chart covers sales from November 22, 2010 to May 22, 2011:
One Piece sold 32.34 million copies in 2010, and is well on pace to sell over 40 million this year. Lifetime sales were estimated at 247 million last month. The first volume was released in Dec. 1997. Eiichiro Oda earned almost $100 million USD last year alone.

6/4-5, 2011 Weekend Forecast
1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Walt Disney) Week 3 2. Princess Toyotomi (Toho) Week 2 3. What if a Female Manager of a High School Baseball Team Read Drucker's "Management"? (Toho) NEW 4. Paradise Kiss (Warner Bros.) NEW 5. Black Swan (Fox) Week 4 6. Gaku (Toho) Week 5 7. Sengoku Basara - The Last Party (Shochiku) NEW 8. Osamu Tezuka's Buddha Red Desert! Beautiful! (TOEI/Warner Bros.) Week 2 9. The Adjustment Bureau (Toho-Towa) Week 2 10. Gantz: Perfect Answer (Toho) Week 7
Predictions:
Pirates 4 should gross between 850-950 million yen (about $11 million) this weekend, and will have a 17-day total near 5.5 billion yen ($68 million); 3.5milish admissions. Gonna say 5.3 billion yen ($66 million).
Paradise Kiss isn't performing as well as I originally thought. Advance ticket sales are trailing Management (for short, heh). I'm going to predict 225 million yen ($2.8 million) and 175 million yen ($2.2 million)
Black Swan will continue to hold very well and be around a four week total of 1.7 billion yen ($21 million).

It will register at least five weeks at #1, and could do six if it continues to see better drops than At World's End.
Unfortunately, there haven't been any updates on it's box office aside from Weekend grosses.

Depends on what you mean by that question, lol.
-Summer, the season, officially begins June 21st (like the rest of the Northern Hemisphere).
-Summer Box Office, to me, begins with Golden Week on April 29th.
-Summer Vacation for Students begins the third week of July (around the 20th) and lasts for 4 weeks (end of August). The school year in Japan begins in April, and doesn't really ever let out with the longest break being a month. Universities vary, depending on the schedule for each school.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Yearly Chart Update
The release date, and first trailer, for The Tale of Genji have been released.
The Tale of Genji is a classic work of Japanese literature attributed to the Japanese noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu in the early 11th century, around the peak of the Heian period. It is sometimes called the world's first novel, the first modern novel, the first psychological novel or the first novel still to be considered a classic.
"Genji Monogatari" is expected to weave fiction and reality, with original novelist Murasaki Shikibu becoming a character in the movie.
Trailer:
It's bound to a big hit, and likely the biggest release this coming Winter. Probably a good contender for 5 billion yen ($60 million or more.)

I meant BO wise so I am sure June 21st it is not. I though the Golden Week was just one week of great numbers and then the BO goes back to normal ?
If the vacations start from July 20th than it makes more sense to release high profile movies during that time specially the ones attracting teen crowds and families.

That's why July (Mid-July in particular) is always really crowded, and also why everything released co-exist very well each year. Mid-July to Late August is the longest break students get during the year.
This year it's Harry Potter, new Studio Ghibli, and two Pokemon films opening the same weekend. Those four will likely combine for 20-25 billion yen ($250-300 million USD).
I suppose you would say the Summer BO Season begins Mid-July, but it's still just for one month.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); The Tale of Genji details
Rankings by Location (Toho, Warner, Shikoku)
TOHO
The Adjustment Bureau (Toho-Towa) Week 2 7. Gaku (Toho) Week 5 8. Hankyu Densha (Toho) Week 7 9. Gantz: Perfect Answer (Toho) Week 7 10. Osamu Tezuka's Buddha Red Desert! Beautiful! (TOEI/Warner) Week 2
Drops are going to be much bigger than last weekend based on the Usual Locations. No single digit drops or anything this time.
On Stranger Tides looks to have hit 5 billion yen ($62 million) after 17 days in release.
A quick comparison: Deathly Hallows Part I grossed 3.7 billion yen ($45 million) after 17 days, and went on to finish with 6.8 billion yen ($83 million). A similar run would give Pirates 4 about 9 billion yen ($112 million).

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Pirates over $60 million
Films Grossing Over $55 Million USD After 3 Weeks In Release:
Title - 3 Week Total --> Final Total
Howl's Moving Castle - $65.8 million --> $190 million Alice in Wonderland - $62.9 million --> $142.78 million Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - $62 million (Estimate) Umizaru 3: The Last Message - $56.3 million --> $97.28 million
It's a very short list, and most happen to be very recent. Largely due to the dollar being so weak the past couple years, and also because of 3D. All are 3D releases, minus Howl's Moving Castle.

That is a harsh drop for japan. Is it because last weekend hold was very good or were there external factors?

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Estimates
Last weekend was inflated. The last weekend of May is always really strong, but this year's was more inflated than usual with the drops being sizable for all the holdovers. The third weekend for Pirates is still above the third weekend of films like Umizaru 3, Harry Potter 5, 6, 7, and others in Yen, and much higher in USD.
Weekdays are always more important anyway. As long as the weekday gross is greater than or equal to the weekend gross (which they have been for Pirates so far), you know the film is going to have a strong run. Assuming Pirates is at 5 billion yen now, it added approx. 1.4 billion yen ($17.5 million) over the past seven days.

No. Alice in Wonderland had an insane run because it opened right before Golden Week. It had three weekends over 1 billion yen, which had only been done once before by Howl's Moving Castle. It was in a league of it's own really. It's four week total would be over $100 million today.
Pirates is still heading towards a total of 8/9 billion yen ($100-115 million), though, by tracking nearly $20 million ahead of Deathly Hallows after three weeks.
