BRIDESMAIDS held up crazy well in the face of THE HANGOVER.
Very nice number for MIDNIGHT IN PARIS.

Man, $130 million for the 5-day is going to be close. I can't believe MTC is going to be spot on for Panda. Even though the signs were there, it's pretty stunning that it'll end up far below the first one admissions wise. Is this more bad news for 3D?

Nice. Like in the case of Pirates 4, people have decided "We want no more of this.".

Notfabio said that theater chains raised prices even higher for Pirates, which is a pretty remarkable display of greed. I hope Hollywood is noticing that the three breakout hits this year (Fast Five, Bridesmaids, Hangover) are in 2D. That said, I think there's two films this year that will benefit extremely from 3D prices: Harry Potter and Twilight. Those fanbases are so rabid they'll see it no matter how much it costs.

Nice. Like in the case of Pirates 4, people have decided "We want no more of this.". Although OST > AWE and KFP2 > KFP but TH > TH2? Yeah, whatever. Fuck this. I have no idea what went wrong with KFP2 but that is really, really depressing for it. I'm seeing it next week. Screw box office.

I'm glad audiences are starting to shun 3D. I'm so sick of every movie released being in 3D, especially when a lot of them were not filmed that way.

there are so many sellouts that hangover could have another 30M day(or two). Any chance of this hitting indy 4 numbers.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (Nikki)
I'm sure Kung Fu Panda 2 will still reach 200 Million. There's really no reason it won't. Legs will certainly be there. Plus a lot of families travel on Memorial Weekend so maybe they just didn't have time to go out and see it this first weekend. This doesn't have to worry until Cars 2 opens June 24th, so it has a month.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (Nikki)
Mixed feelings. On one hand it's great to see an R-rated movie for once beating the shit out of (at least domestically) a family friendly cartoon (though, the latter will probably have much better legs), on the other hand it's the sequel to an overrated comedy.

Even though the Friday numbers were poor for KFP2 I think Saturday/Sunday numbers will be much more telling of how it will perform overall.

Being a member of both fanbases, more Potter than Twilight, I would have to agree with that. Nothing could stop me from seeing the last Harry Potter movie. Many will see it two or three times, and I'd bet at least one of those times will be in 3D. I don't think Transformers will be hurt by 3D, but it won't be helped either. I still think The Smurfs 3D is going to bomb pretty hard.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (Nikki)
Great for TH2, and absolutely troubling for KFP2. One has to wonder how it would have opened if it was strictly a 2D offering? A 60% Saturday increase looks like the best it could so, but hopefully it surprises.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (Nikki)
I am fine with The Hangover 2 numbers,,, 135m+ in these days is terrific, but on the other side....
disappointing for Kung Fu Panda 2,,, will Cars 2 follow the same fate or will it breakout???
I insist Pirates 4 is stealing KFP2 audience

I insist Pirates 4 is stealing KFP2 audience Cars 2 will be bigger in the US than Kung Fu Panda 2. Overseas, my guess would be Panda will do better. I get a general sense from customers at my store that families are far more interested in Cars 2.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (Nikki)
Why would Cars 2 do better?
It has even less reason for a sequel than KFP. Pixar has a higher % of adult audience who will not be interested in Cars 2. It is also in 3D.
The only thing it has going for it is if KFP2 completely fails from now on which it has been doing already. Let's not use any excuse that could have been used for every previous year. This means the problems are one of two, Hangover 2 competition or pathetic marketing.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (Nikki)
BK, simple fact is Pixar has a big built in audience that other studio's lack. Despite what you hear in internet forums they will be there for this film as well. you will find out in a month's time.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (Nikki)
Very impressive for The Hangover 2!
Underwhelming for Kung Fu Panda, but I'm going to hold off on calling it a disappointment. Surprised this wasn't mentioned, but KFP2's Cinemascore audience ratings are higher than the first panda film.
KFP received the best Cinemascores of an A-, a best for Dreamworks Animation. KFP2 matched Dragon's score of an A, which would be a tie for DW animation's best Cinemascores.
So with Saturday/Sunday numbers, we'll have a good idea of where its heading. Family films opening over this long weekend have spread out opening weekends:
Night at the museum 2: $15.6 m Friday, $54.2 m 3day, $70.1 m 4day Madagascar 1: $13.9 m Friday, $47.2 m 3day, $61 m 4day

But your club for KFP2 is HUGE FAIL. I dont think its making half of what you predicted.
