 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
WOW...disappointing numbers for Panda and GREAT for Hangover. Even though both these are 5-day and tracking hasn't been as great with family movies...so there is still a chance....I don't see Panda doing less than $75m in 5-days

 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
That looks about right based on the marketing. Panda 2 doesn't even seem to be trying to open big. I've seen more Cars 2 promos than Panda 2. But box office history says that it will increase over its predecessor, which it might not be able to do with that weak of an opening.

That is ridiculously good for The Hangover 2 and a bit surprising for KFP2.

 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
Tracking is well known to underestimate family films, and it's going to happen here. Marketplace is pretty much wide open for a welcome sequel to a successful animated film.

 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
Tracking fucking around again.
The "rule" says Panda 60<, Hangover >140. Good job.
Looks like they are attempting to fail as badly as 2010. Jokers.
Seems like missing BM by over 100% wasn't enough.

They were both spot on with Thor and Pirates though.

 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
Kung Fu Panda will be fine. The BOM poll is quite high for it (31.8% OW), much higher than the first Panda (23% OW), Shrek Forever After (23.7%), Madagascar II (21.5%), etc.
There's obviously no doubt about The Hangover II at this point. Ridiculously high MTC (well above RS), crazy buzz on Twitter, and very high poll numbers (39.5% OW) compared to The Hangover (23.9%).

THR: 'Hangover 2' on Track to Open North of $100 Million at U.S. Box OfficeBox office shocker: The R-rated sequel will be the first film in months to surpass the figure so far this year in its opening weekend. "The Hangover Part II"Todd Phillips’ The Hangover Part II is tracking so well it’s widely expected to become the first movie in months to open north of $100 million at the domestic box office. The R-rated sequel, from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, has the advantage of a four-day weekend because of Memorial Day, and is giving itself an additional day of play by opening on Thursday at 12:01 a.m. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/risky- ... rth-191126

 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
That article doesn't make clear whether it's talking about 3-day, 4-day or 5-day, but it makes it seem like they're talking about 3-day? Being the "first" film of the year to surpass the mark?

Welp, The Hangover II will be enormous. And I cannot say I am AT ALL surprised. This has more buzz amongst friends/family/coworkers/etc. than any movie in a longggg time.

 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
If Hangover does 125+mil over the 5-day, there's a good chance it could become the highest grossing comedy of all time. Which I believe is a record still held by Home Alone.

 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
With HANGOVER tracking being this good and plenty of sold out shows being very likely I guess that BRIDESMAIDS will be the No. 1 spillover destination for those who can't get a ticket for H2...

 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
Now THR says:
Tracking for Hangover Part II isn’t slowing down any, either, causing some box office observers to predict that it could even debut north of $120 million domestically for the extended weekend.

 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
These next two weeks are going to go a long way towards catching up to 2010. I could see them both being up 40+% compared to last year.

 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
I'm only predicting the top 6 this weekend. Pretty much all holdovers will be slaughtered by the two monsters opening.
(New) 1. THE HANGOVER II - 128.1 Million (-5-Day) (New) 2. KUNG FU PANDA 2 - 116.9 Million (5-Day) (-69%) 3. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES - 27.9 Million (3-Day) (-40%) 4. BRIDESMAIDS - 12.5 Million (3-Day) (-55%) 5. THOR - 7 Million (3-Day) (-54%) 6. FAST FIVE - 4.9 Million (3-Day)

 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
Doesnt surprise me at all. I never bought the Panda $300m/$400m total gross nonsense. I still think it will open well over the 5-days though - even at $75-$90m, it will have solid legs to get above the first one. Still think it will do $220-$250m total.
Hangover is in my demographic and many I know love the first and want to see it. We really should expect atleast $120m+ and it ending up somewhere near the first.
Being a big comedy sequel has made us a little more cautious, but should we be when films like American Pie 2 and Austin Powers 2 exploded!

 Re: May 26-30 Predictions
^ Hangover II is reminding me of American Pie 2, even though it will clearly be bigger than that film was. But American Pie 2 opened to 2.5 times higher than American Pie 1 did, so the increase could be similar here.
