Quote:
Murder by Death is a 1976 comedy film with a cast featuring Eileen Brennan, Truman Capote, James Coco, Peter Falk, Alec Guinness, Elsa Lanchester, David Niven, Peter Sellers, Maggie Smith, Nancy Walker, and Estelle Winwood, written by Neil Simon and directed by Robert Moore.

The plot is a spoof of the traditional country-house whodunit, familiar to mystery fiction fans from classics such as Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, a form also parodied for the stage in Tom Stoppard's The Real Inspector Hound. The cast is an ensemble of British and American actors playing send-ups of well-known fictional sleuths, including Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Charlie Chan, Nick and Nora Charles, and Sam Spade.

It also features a rare acting performance by In Cold Blood author Truman Capote. The film was presented at the Venice International Film Festival in 1976.

Not as amazing as Clue to me, but I think there is a lot of great stuff in this murder mystery spoof.

Peter Sellers and Peter Falk are absolutely hilarious as the Charlie Chan and Bogart characters. The others are also very well done, and all the characters are fun. And Truman Capote is even pretty fun at how goofy he is. Also the opening titles and music is now one of my favorites.

My only real complaint is the payoff in the end. It tries to be way too clever, and I dislike what they do to Guiness' character as it feels cheap. I know that was the point of it, but for a movie it gives off too much of a plothole that I think it detracts in the end. I also dislike how short it is. The murder happens in the last 20 minutes, and I could have easily had more film of them exploring the house and investigating.

A huge reccomendation though if you enjoyed Clue, or any of the Charlie Chan, Thin Man, Perroit, Miss Marple or Bogart films. They are all thrown into a murder mystery together to see who is the best detective. You can watch it instantly on Netflix.

Solid A-

In what way?

With all the last minute twists that that these stories are famous for, I dislike what they do to Guiness' character, as it means all of his scenes are pointless, as well as Peter Falk's reveal, even though I did like his, the final reveal kind of just sucks.

Spoiler: show
I have just never been a fan of the whole, well the whole film was pointless; Nothing happened, or it was one big teaching a lesson kind of film, I can let it slide because the film is 37 years old and is one of the first to do that, and it did it for satire purposes, but it's just my two cents, it was overkill for me.

The point is that it is pointless. The revelations are supposed to be bizarre and nonsensical. Just listen to Lionel Twain's final speech. Yes, in a way 'nothing happened', but you still try to make sense of it. I have seen the film many, many times and still enjoy it.

I'm generally embarrassed to admit I like this as much as I do, since it's Neil Simon.

I know thats the point, I just said the same thing. My point was it felt dated to me, and it doesn't work completely.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film too, doesn't mean it doesn't have flaws. Peter Sellers was truly brilliant. Anyone just watching couldn't tell he wasn't Asian. You'll never see a role like this again (RDJ in Tropic Thunder at the most)

What you said was ambiguous. That is why I asked and responded.

Well I tried to say it without giving as little spoilers out as possible, I never like giving ideas away, especially the ending. It's the end of any of those movies X6, I just think in the end it hurts it. Not enough to not enjoy the film though.

It is perfectly acceptable to give spoilers to a 33 year old movie.

True, but not my style no matter what, my mom use to ruin everything for me on anything I missed, especially on TV. I found this movie to be pretty awesome and unknown to a lot of people on here, so I didn't want to give too much away.

And I absolutely love the opening credits. One of my new favorites.
