 Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Quote: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a 1939 American drama film starring James Stewart and Jean Arthur, about one man's effect on American politics. It was directed by Frank Capra and written by Sidney Buchman, based on Lewis R. Foster's unpublished story. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was controversial when it was released, but also successful at the box office, and made Stewart a major movie star. The film features a bevy of well-known supporting actors, among them Claude Rains, Edward Arnold, Guy Kibbee, Thomas Mitchell and Beulah Bondi.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning for Best Original Story. In 1989, the Library of Congress added the movie to the United States National Film Registry, for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Very good movie (another great one from director Frank Capra). Jimmy Stewart and Claude Rains both give absolutely brilliant peformances. A gripping story filled with some genuine emotion and a great message combine to make a truly wonderful movie. There is some awfully nice cinematography as well.

What a film! Unabashedly naive, idealistic, and patriotic, but it works very well and strikes the right note with good humors mixed in. The depiction is still relevant today. And Stewart gave one standout performance. A.

First of all....Jimmy Stewart. He's my favorite actor of all time. Put him in a movie that's both entertaining AND educational and I loved it. This should be required viewing for American children since it clearly details how government works....and still makes it interesting.
My grade: A.

Re: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
The film is really good but when the Filibuster starts you see Jimmy Stewart at his best and you see some really great acting from the man. That scene is timeless and the ending is sad and happy at the same time. Jimmy Stewart from the get go showed us he is one of the best actor to ever live and this was still 15 years before his real prime.
Claude Rains really does well as a supporting actor and the whole movie is inspiring and emotional.
It is a very old film from 1939 but it is a film that cannot be remade.
There is no one with persona and personality of Jimmy Stewart in Hollywood now.

Oh yeah, he is amazing at how he can play so many different roles.
He is always the nice guy underneath but he can become anybody...

Re: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Jimmy Stewart > anyone else from that era bar Charlie Chaplin (although he was an era before Stewart, so just Stewart).

Yeah Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant stayed on the scene for a long time.
From the Late 30's to the mid 60's...

Hollywood already tried it, didn't they have a project on this around 1997, written and directed by Mel Gibson with Homer Simpson producing? A fantastic movie, its a shame it didn't win best picture but when you go up against Gone with the Wind its kind of hard to. Enough good things cannot be said about this masterpiece.. I wish this movie had a decent DVD release so I could watch it over and over again, my VHS is worn out.

Re: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
The only complaint I have about some of Capra's films (Mr. Smith and Wonderful Life especially) is that they just end suddenly! There's no denouement at the end....
In Mr. Smith, there is the confession, but no follow up. What happens? Does the corrupt lawmaker quit? In Wonderful Life, what happens to Potter, who should be found guilty of theft?
They both still get As from me though!

I'm sure it means well, but it's so overblown and ridiculous that I can't take it seriously.
