The hosts were as lame as expected, seriously.

When Kirk Douglas was on stage I was afraid he might die right in front of everyone.

Nothing exciting about the winners, except for Inception taking Cinematography and The Social Network tkaing Score. Both well-deserved.

Tom Hooper - Best Picture winner? They've gotta be fucking kidding. At least they Academy had enough sense to award Private Ryan BD before robbing it of BP, but to give TSN neither of the two?! Ridiculous. It's as if Marshall had won BD for Chicago or Madden for Shakespeare in Love. Ridiculous.

But I do wonder why do we expect something different from Oscars each year? :funny:

Also there weren't any pics last night, but you people went crazy with the "they made Bale trim his beard" theory. It looked the same on the red carpet and inside, I had no idea what all of you were talking about.

I smell a "Batman has let himself go by growing a beard to signify just how low he has fallen" opening scene in The Dark Knight Rises!

Fincher really deserved BD moreso than Network deserved BP. Oh well. There's always the movie about that girl with some tattoo.

I think Douglas seems more fragile than what he really is because of the speech impediment caused by a stroke some years ago, but remember that he also survived a helicopter crash not many years before that.
You could also see that he really didn't need the cane either.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

In twenty years, lets see if anybody remembers King Speech over Social Network, Inception, or Toy Story 3. I hate it that the academy pick these movies that come out in the last few weeks of the year. I also just don't see the King's Speech being a lasting memorable film. Its is like people remember Star wars over Annie Hall, ET over Gandhi, or Saving Private Ryan over Shakespeare in Love.

Uh...Annie Hall is infinitely better than the first Star Wars. And Saving Private Ryan may be better than Shakespeare in Love, but SPR is hardly a perfect movie.

Annie Hall might be better in your opinion but Star Wars is the movie remembered from that year. Look at the AFI list Star Wars is above it. That is the problem with the Oscars sometimes, it becomes a popularity contest and the voters don't think about what movie will be longer lasting.

They are not supposed to. The award is called "Best Picture" not "longest lasting picture" or "most memorable picture." I agree it becomes a popularity contest and should just be individual voters honestly picking what they think is the best, but the lasting impact of the movie has nothing to do with these awards.

I would say the opposite, the social network was largely a script movie, with some simple, subtle, albeit very good directorial work, but it wasn't really a fancy directing movie. Of course then neither was King's Speech, like at all. Aronofsky or the Coen's really deserve the award but they were never in the conversation.

Clearly you can't sing.

Gwyneth is obviously doesn't have a wide vocal range like a Christina or Clarkson but she can sing.

I know I can't sing. I sing awful. But Gwyneth made 2 horrible performances back to back.

I thought the show was fine. Hathaway was more engaging than Franco. Maybe she should have hosted it herself like another poster mentioned.

Maybe now they can try to get a Jim Carey or Will Ferrel host the thing. Hopefully we never have a Late Night host be considered because I heard some radio guys mention Jimmy Fallon and I would dread that if it ever happened.

I enjoyed Leo's speech. Missed Bale's. Portman was nice. Firth should have won last year. Didn't see TKS but I would have preferred TSN to win.

I enjoyed the Kirk Douglas presentation. I would have preferred the 5 actors and actresses showering praise on the nominees rather than the 1 presenter doing it. I agree with Newman about the nominating. Fill up the category.

What constitutes directorial work?

Low point for me was when Timberlake mocked Kirk Douglas, I was actually stunned for a second when Hathaway took away his cane and started to walk with it.

Billy Crystal was awesome in his brief moment, could be a sign of his return. The only part I really liked about Hathaway was when she sang about Hugh Jackman.

Interestingly, I found that to be one of the few good jokes.

I think that was the only moment I actually laughed aloud. It didn't seem like mocking to me, more just running with a previously successful joke in hopes of another laugh. Not hilarious, but at least it actually had the feeling of an off-the-cuff remark intended for humor--unlike the entire rest of the show (Leo's "accidental" fuck ringing especially hollow to me).

I think you're confusing direction with art direction.
