For whatever reason, the Academy really hates Roger Deakins.

It's not hate. Everyone in the Academy votes, and I'm sure most of them don't know Pfister from Deakins from Lubezki from Savides. They just glance at a ballot and vote for which one they feel had the prettiest/coolest/most stylish look.

Deakins is just the Peter O'Toole of cinematographers, then.

For example, I doubt the thousands of voters have a personal grudge against this man: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0640114/awardsJust bad luck. Peter O'Toole is a 'worse' example because I'm sure they're all well aware who he is and how great he has been for decades. Yet they've never even thought, "Oh, it's his -time-, sure Venus isn't his best, but let's give this man a goddam Oscar."

For example, major awards like best picture/director/actor/screenplay are worth 10X the promotional prestige of minor technical awards like sound mixing/editing or visual effects. In that more accurate system, The King's Speech won by a landslide with The Fighter a distant second, and the minor films like Inception and The Social Network barely registering at all.

I must admit, Sir Bradley, I'm surprised to see a learned gentleman such as yourself demeaning the technical artisans who are ultimately just as integral to the film industry as the famous actors and directors.
