Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Estimates
Dr. Lecter wrote: It's not at all unusual for movies to open much later in Japan than elsewhere. See Robin Hood or Red for recent examples. Yeah, I know that, but don't they usually suffer a bit as a result versus if they had opened closer to day and date? Like Robin Hood only made $7m in Japan, which was the worst by far of any of the "big markets" (ex. even in Brazil it made $8m). Thanks for your estimates Corpse, $12-18m would be great as along with China it could help the movie hit $200m+ overseas.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Hayao Miyazaki's next work
Japanese novelist Genichirō Takahashi (Sayonara, Gangsters) posted on his Twitter account that he talked with acclaimed anime director Hayao Miyazaki at Studio Ghibli on Thursday and revealed that he learned about the next work that Miyazaki is planning to direct.
Takahashi added that he learned about the story of Miyazaki's next work, and even though the story is still secret, Takahashi said that he thought it might become Miyazaki's finest masterpiece. He talked with Miyazaki for three hours; Miyazaki had been waiting for him in the middle of the road while wearing an apron, and Takahashi joked that it reminded him of the moment that the main characters meet Totoro in the film My Neighbor Totoro. (why does he have to be so cool?)
Ghibli's producer and former president Toshio Suzuki had previously revealed "The Five-Year Plan for the Management of Studio Ghibli," after Miyazaki presented part of the plan to the Ghibli production staff in November of 2008. The first three years are devoted to works by young creators, while the last two years will be devoted to the production of "epics."
The first work in the five-year plan was last year's Karigurashi no Arrietty from first-time director Hiromasa Yonebayashi. The second work is Kokuriko-Zaka Kara, with which Suzuki said that director Goro Miyazaki (Hayao Miyazaki's son) will demonstrate his "true worth" since his first film (Tales from Earthsea) involved "beginner's luck." Suzuki did not specifically say how many "epics" will be made in the last two years of the five-year plan, nor did he say at the time that Hayao Miyazaki would direct one of those epics. Suzuki did predict in October of 2009 that Miyazaki's next feature film might open in four years.http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interes ... -next-workUnless Studio Ghibli has some unexpected surprises, Hayao Miyazaki's next film (and probably last) looks to be the third and final film in their five-year plan introduced in 2008. And given the above, it's safe to predict a huge performance at the box-office, even by Miyazaki and Ghibli expectations.

Um, doesn't Miyazaki say about each of his films that it'll be his last?

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Hayao Miyazaki's next work
He does, but considering he'll be 72 or 73 when his next film is released, it's more likely this time around. Their five-year plan was also meant to give experience to the younger staff of Studio Ghibli, and so far it's been a big success with Arrietty becoming the most attended film (7.7 million admissions) in Japan by a first time director. We'll see how Goro Miyazaki's second film does this Summer, and if that success continues for the younger generation.
I guess we'll know for sure when he doesn't say his next work will be his last, haha.

Weekend Forecast February 19-20, 2011
1 1 Gantz (Toho) 4 2 2 Miracle Man of the Pacific (Toho) 2 3 3 Tomorrow's Joe (Toho) 2 4 - Hereafter (Warner Bros.) NEW 5 4 Red (Disney) 4 6 - A Better Tomorrow (TOEI) NEW 7 5 Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (Fox) 3 8 7 Mom's Daily Life (Shochiku) 3 9 8 The Social Network (Sony) 6 10 6 Paranormal Activity 2 (Paramount) 2
Eastwood's previous three films opened between 129-178 million yen, so something similar should be expected from Hereafter. But I'm going to predict a little below the range with 120 million yen ($1.45 million) though.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); 34th Japan Academy Prize Result
Saturday Results from the usual locations (15% of the market):
Openers,
Hereafter: 62.4% of Red's first day in release. -If this represents the weekend as a whole, then Hereafter should have an opening with 115-120,000 admissions or 130 million yen ($1.6 million) or so. This is right in line with Eastwood's previous films.
Top Holdovers,
Gantz: -36.2% compared to last Saturday. -That would give Gantz a fourth weekend of about 165 million yen ($2 million).
Miracle Man of the Pacific: -44.2% compared to last Saturday. -That would give Miracle Man a second weekend of about 145 million yen ($1.75 million).
Tomorrow's Joe: -45.8% compared to last Saturday. -That would give Joe a second weekend of about 110 million yen ($1.35 million).
Red: -51% compared to last Saturday. -That would give Red a fourth weekend of about 60 million yen ($.75 million).
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps: -58.6% compared to last Saturday. -That would give Wall Street 2 a third weekend of about 35 million yen ($.425 million).
Mom's Daily Life: - 33.4% compared to last Saturday. -That would give Mom a third weekend of about 45 million yen ($.55 million).
Paranormal Activity 2: -37.7% compared to last Saturday. -That would give Paranormal Activity 2 a second weekend of about 45 million yen ($.55 million).

A Look Ahead over the next month of release:
February 25th: The Chronicles of Narnia: Chapter 3: Aslan the King and the Island of Magic/The Voyage of the Dawn Treader 3D (Walt Disney Int'l), How To Make Love and News/Morning Glory (Paramount)
February 26th: The King's Speech (GAGA), Journey of a Dying Wife (Gate Elementary), Macross Frontier The Movie: The Wings of Goodbye (Klock Worx)
March 5th: Doraemon: Nobita and the New Steel Troops: ~Angel Wings~ 3D (Toho), The Tourist (Sony)
March 12th: SP: The Motion Picture 2 (Toho), Rapunzel/Tangled 3D (Walt Disney Int'l)
March 18th: True Grit (Paramount)
March 19th: Toriko and One Piece Double Feature 3D (TOEI), Fantastic Mr. Fox (Gate Elementary), Comic Gang (Kadokawa Pictures)
March 26th: The Fighter (GAGA), Life as We Know It (Warner Bros.), Jackass 3D (Paramount)
Top 5 Predictions:
1. Doraemon: Nobita and the New Steel Troops: ~Angel Wings~ 3D (Toho) - 3.6 billion yen ($43.5 million). 2. SP: The Motion Picture 2 (Toho) - 3.3 billion yen ($40 million). 3. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader 3D (Walt Disney Int'l) - 2 billion yen ($24 million). 4. Tangled 3D (Walt Disney Int'l) - 1.75 billion yen ($21.5 million). 5. The Tourist (Sony) - 1.5 billion yen ($18 million).
The Doraemon films always gross around 3-3.5 billion yen every March, so this one should be no different. It's also the first one to be released in 3D, so there may be some extra potential here explaining the slight increase from the usual gross.
SP: The Motion Picture grossed 3.63 billion yen last year, and 3 billion is assured for the sequel next month. Sequels released this close to one another can be tricky though, in a positive and negative way, so going somewhat safe here by not predicting an increase.
Prince Caspian saw an extreme drop from the original Narnia, and poor WOM and legs. Another substantial drop is in store for the newest films, regardless of any 3D boost. The 3D competition in March will only shorten it's legs, too. And for a big release, it's current the 42nd Most Searched for Film on Eiga.com with only 6 days before it's release.
Tangled should gross a bit above the usual 1-1.5 billion range for non-Pixar foreign animated films.
The Tourist has Depp and Jolie, the two biggest Hollywood draws in the market. Obviously this didn't help it in some places, but both stars have yet to have a film gross below 1 billion yen (that was wide) to my knowledge over the last decade.
Wild Cards: Toriko and One Piece Double Feature 3D (TOEI) and The King's Speech (GAGA) (with a BP win) are potential 1 billion yen contenders.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); 34th Japan Academy Prize Result
Weekend Results from the usual locations (15% of the market):
Openers,
Hereafter: 83.6% bigger than Wall Street 2's 2-day opening weekend. -A very strong Sunday now points toward Hereafter opening with 160-170,000 admissions or 205-215 million yen (about $2.5 million). This would be Eastwood's best opening in years, beating even the Jolie's Changeling's opening of 178 million yen.
Top Holdovers,
Gantz: -20.5% compared to last Weekend. -That would give Gantz a fourth weekend of 205-210 million yen ($2.5 million), which puts it in fierce competition with Hereafter's opening for the top spot this weekend. If Gantz succeeds this weekend, it'll have spent 4 straight weeks on top.
Miracle Man of the Pacific: -34.1% compared to last Weekend -That would give Miracle Man a second weekend of about 155-165 million yen ($2 million).
Tomorrow's Joe: -32.9% compared to last Weekend. -That would give Joe a second weekend of about 125-130 million yen ($1.6 million).
Red: -40.1% compared to last Weekend. -That would give Red a fourth weekend of about 65 million yen ($.80 million).
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps: -49.3% compared to last Weekend. -That would give Wall Street 2 a third weekend of about 40 million yen ($.50 million).
Mom's Daily Life: -6.1% compared to last Weekend. -That would give Mom a third weekend of about 65 million yen ($.80 million).
Paranormal Activity 2: -29% compared to last Weekend. -That would give Paranormal Activity 2 a second weekend of about 50 million yen ($.60 million).

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); A Look Ahead
It looks like Warner is in the process of changing their site, so I doubt they'll update the top films at their locations this weekend.
But, information has Gantz exceeding 2 million admissions (which should be about 2.5/2.6 billion yen or $31 million) after 23 days in release and ranks 1st this weekend to make it four consecutive now.
The National Top 10 and select numbers will be released between now and the morning.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Estimates (Gantz V4)
Glad Gantz is doing well. Any projections?
Interesting that Confessions won the main prizes while Villain swept the acting category. Was the acting really that good in Villain or are those considered consolation prizes?

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Estimates (Gantz V4)
I have Gantz finishing with about 3.3 billion yen ($40.5 million). 3.5 billion yen ($43 million) should be the ceiling for it.
I haven't seen Villain, but I'm pretty sure the acting and the overall film were very good because of the reviews I read when it was released last fall.
