Post The King's Speech (INTL) - $275,414,100
I am fully convinced that, apart from the obvious Inception and Toy Story 3, The King's Speech will be by far the biggest film overseas among the Best Picture nominees, so it does deserve its own thread.

So far it has opened only in a few major markets (Spain, UK, Australia) and has made $49,751,878 so far. It is still going strong too.

Its UK performance is by far the most impressive one. After three weeks it stands at £18,312,482 there with its third weekend still higher than its first!

Over the next weeks it will open in Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan, Portugal, France, Netherlands, Brazil and others.

I could see it becoming one of the biggest non-LOTR/Avatar Best Picture nominees overseas in recent memory with a rather decent chance to even beat Slumdog Millionaire's $236.6 million. Keep in mind, Shakespeare in Love made $189 million overseas back in 1998!

Right now I see $230-270 million overseas, depending on how many Oscars it will win. $400+ million worldwide is very much possible.

Yeah, this will be BIG. Honestly, even $300 million overseas would not shock me. Shakespeare in Love's gross is not just unadjusted, but it's also that some markets have emerged big time since then.

With the film now pretty much guaranteed to win Best Picture, I think it is a near-lock for $300+ million overseas. Wow!

The King's Speech could also certainly get a bump up in April with the royals getting married. It will greatly increase interest in The King's Speech Again (about William's Great Grandfather), so imo it could get a second chance at the box office worldwide in late April if its still in enough theaters...

$67,423,496 overseas as of now.

It opens in France and Sweden next weekend and in Brazil and Portugal the weekend after.

UK total after four weeks: £24,905,378. Its fourth weekend was still higher than its opening weekend! Looks lke this is going for £55+ million and the all-time Top 10.

Its at $18.4m here now and should get to over $25m which is fantastic.

Word of mouth among the older set is huge. My mother's neighbour has seen it twice and told my mother that she would see it with her (a third time) if she went. My mother did see it and was a little underwhelmed due to the hype but generally liked it.

Seriously, I am starting to wonder whether $350 million overseas is possible.

Post Re: The King's Speech (INTL) - $86,767,262
UNITED KINGDOM - Weekend 5

One of the leggiest movies we've seen in recent times at these levels. It's holds are not unlike that of Mamma Mia! and with the BAFTAs ahead and Oscars as well, this pace is going to continue.

It's already registered close to $50m in just 5 weeks, only Toy Story 3, HP7-1 and Alice in Wonderland have bettered it in the past year. It's 5th weekend gross is behind only the likes of Avatar, Mamma Mia!, LOTR1 - huge stuff.

With these sorta holds it should do at least another $15-20m, bringing it's likely total to around $65-20m (say what!); however, should it receive a huge boost over the next 3 weeks as a result of BAFTAs/Oscars, then $70m+ is quite achievable with $80m not out of the question at this stage.

Very Impressive indeed! I will go ahead and predict a 400m OS total...I know it is a bit ballsy but the WOM will be huge. So I think it can make that.

Yet the sustained performance of "The King's Speech" — driven largely by lucrative returns from American markets that don't typically embrace such a film — is perhaps the award season's most extraordinary box-office tale. The drama about stuttering King George VI's relationship with a speech therapist will cross the $100-million mark this weekend (it passed $200 million worldwide on Wednesday), and may not slow down after hitting those benchmarks.

Huh? Would you people agree with this statement? I don't think TKS is a type of movie American audiences usually shy away from. It's a given it wouldn't be as successful if it didn't have all the Oscar hype around itself, but I think with its rather light nature and its intent to conform to all of the basic things audience wants from this kind of a movie it would still make some decent BO $$$$.

Also TKS is not the most extraordinary BO tale of this award season. BS and TG beat it with their performance.

No way is TKS the most extraordinary box office tale. Black Swan's domestic and overseas performances (especially domestic for such a "weird" movie that earns its R rating so, so much more than TKS--which aside from some cursing is pure PG13) are worlds more impressive. True Grit is also far more atypical and surprising, at least domestically--don't know enough about its overseas grosses to fully comment.

I honestly don't see anything special about the box office performance of TKS. It's an Oscar-bait movie that's emerged as the frontrunner thanks to Weinstein. How does the box office not reflect that exactly?

Well, if it makes $350+ million overseas, I'd call its overseas performance definitely more impressive than Black Swan's.

Given The Queen, a PG-13 rated Oscar contender, got "only" $56m domestic and $123m WW, yes, The King's Speech's performance has been extraordinary, especially when you consider it would still have crossed $100m without being the BP frontrunner. It will outgross past British BP winners Shakespeare in Love and The English Patient ($100m/$289m and $79m/$232m, respectively) as well.

Post Re: The King's Speech (INTL) - $86,767,262
The run is no doubt impressive considering the other movies of similar nature. But you still have to remember that The Queen was never as light hearted as this one. It was more a drama and was never a crowd pleaser. TKS is more of a comedy and a crowd pleaser. Shakespeare in Love was a surprise win (atleast that is what I think), and before the Oscars the movie probably did not make much money (I am not 100% sure cause I wasn't following BO at that time). English Patient came at a time when OS grosses weren't that huge for those kind of movies.

TKS would definitely beat Black Swan and True Grit in OS total but it would also have the cushion of an Oscar win which the other two will not have. Also the movie made a lot from UK itself its native country and most of it will come pre-Oscars and that pre-100m mark. Now I am not saying that it is a bad thing or should be counted against its success but then it is an advantage that neither BS nor TG had.

If we actually take out US and UK from TKS it would end up being just a good performer but not great. Same goes for TG as well since its US takings are huge. BS would definitely be effected but the overall run for its kind would be huge.

This is how I see
1. Black Swan
2. The King's Speech
3. True Grit

According to THR its current estimated OS total is $142 million. With four big wins and very good WoM and considering it is still going strong almost everywhere, I'd say that $350+ million is a near-lock. And $500+ million worldwide...

The overseas gross has finally been updated:

$275,414,100

That's simply TREMENDOUS. The only BP nominees since 1999 that made more than that are the usual blockbuster suspects: Avatar, LOTR, Inception, Up and Toy Story 3. It even outgrossed Gladiator overseas.
