I saw 5 minutes of the movie and they looked really good, but the main problem for domestic audiences is, that the movie is a period piece - and we all know that Americans don't like period pieces...

Sherlock Holmes is a period piece too.

Captain America should have gotten the early July release date - too bad it would have had Dark Tranny Moon. It should have taken it anyway. There's no other big reason to be patriotic. Barring that it should have gone Memorial Day, hell even the Election Day / Vet's Day period could have worked. There's never a superhero film in November. They don't all have to be summer. Look at Incredibles. Too much fear of either a Pirates or TF sequel.

Why not? I wish there were more serious discussions about the box office potential of summer 2011 films.

Personally, I think that Captain America has enormous potential, but something of an uphill climb. It will certainly help the film if Thor massively exceeds expectations.

The competition will be fierce, and there could be superhero fatigue.

But late July has shown itself to be kind towards legs, and August is the weakest month of a crowded summer. This will get to 250 million off of crowd-pleaser legs, not from a 100 million opening weekend.

I'm very, very curious to see how Paramount markets this. Can you give any additional comments on the footage mark?

This movie isn't reaching $200 million, let alone $250. I'm still saying $180 million is the absolute limit for this and I wouldn't be surprised if it was even less.

No Effing way. I think this looks best of the superhero films, but I think GL and Thor will both do better thanks to no competitions. Dear god this is in between the Last Harry Potter film EVER and Cowboys and Aliens. This kind of reminds me of summer 03 again.

Potter attracts the same old crowd and this last one will be no different (with the return of some that left the series), so dont think it will be too much competition. And Cowboys and Aliens (i think it will be big) is still an unkown and both can co-exist.

So I still think it can do $175m-ish even if Cowboys breaks out and Potter is the biggest of the series.

CA's biggest issue is that it comes out after Thor, Green Lantern and X4. If these films stink (which is quite probable) audiences may either be turned off further comic book films or be thirsting for one of better quality.

WOW! I didn't expect it to look this good, but I admit I was pretty impressed by this trailer. It looks like it could easily be the best of the superhero films coming out this summer, but I still don't know about $250M. It's has ALOT of competition in July, but if Paramount can get a serious marketing campaign out there for it and if the movie turns ot being as good as this trailer makes it look then I could deffentially see it reach $180M atleast.
