Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Full 2010 Data - Biggest Year E
Shikoku hasn't updated the Top 10 at their locations yet, but most weekend numbers are out:
January 29-30, 2011 Weekend Estimates
1. Gantz (Toho) - 593 million yen ($7.24 million), NEW 2. Red (Disney) - 224 million yen ($2.73 million), NEW 3. The Social Network (Sony) - 125 million yen ($1.52 million), -24%, Week 3 4. 1,778 Stories of Me and My Wife (Toho) - 92 million yen ($1.12 million), -41%, Week 3 5. White Night (GAGA) - 79 million yen ($.97 million), NEW 6. Partners, The Movie 2 (TOEI) - 73 million yen ($.89 million), -28%, Week 6 7. Tensou Sentai Goseiger vs Shinkenger: Epic on the Silver Screen (TOEI) - 70 million yen ($.85 million), -39%, Week 2 8. The Green Hornet (Sony) - 69 million yen ($.84 million), -54%, Week 2 9. Documentary of AKB48 (Toho) - 56 million yen ($.68 million), -51%, Week 2
The Top 10 isn't complete, and I don't know if AKB48 will even be included again this week. It was strangely omitted when actuals were released last week.
Anyway, excellent opening for the live-action adaptation Gantz. Short of the 600 million and the best opening in January (still the biggest in USD, however), but that should get it to a 3-3.5 billion ($36-43 million) total if it's legs aren't cut short due to it's sequel being released in just 12 weeks. It also registered a psa of about $18,000.
Very solid start for Red. I forgot to factor in The Green Hornet's much higher ticket prices when comparing them during the weekend, so I overpredicted it. It should reach a total of about 1.2/1.3 billion yen ($15 million).

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Estimates
February Release Schedule:
4th - Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (Fox)
5th - Mother's Day (Shochiku), The Town (Warner Bros.), Jeanne Waltz (TOEI)
11th (National Holiday: National Foundation Day) - Miracle Man of the Pacific (Toho), Tomorrow's Joe (Toho), Koandoru Pastry Shop (Asmik Ace), Paranormal Activity 2 (Paramount)
19th - Hereafter (Warner Bros.), 71 Into the Fire (Kadokawa Pictures)
25th - The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Fox), Morning Glory (or "How To Make Love and News" in Japan , it's a better title, IMO) (Paramount)
26th - The King's Speech (GAGA), Macross Frontier The Movie: The Wings of Goodbye (Klockworx/Khara)
If The King's Speech wins Best Picture, it's going to have a very strong first week or two and should give GAGA their biggest film of 2011.
Looks like a solid month overall, but will look tiny compared to March this year.

More on Gantz:
592,823,900 yen ($7.24 million); 454,220 Admissions 2-Day Opening Weekend on 321 screens... 410 was reported during the week, hmm... If it is 321, that just makes it even more impressive though with a psa over $22,500.
Gantz becomes the second biggest opener of 2011 (December is included, as well as Harry Potter from Nov.) in Yen, USD, and Admissions. I'll update all the charts when full estimates are released for the other films.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Estimates
Cinematoday.jp or Nikkansports.com report the weekend gross and admissions for the openers. And they sometimes update the gross and admissions for some holdovers. Then bigger sites like Eiga.com or Yahoo.jp update from there.
410 screens turns out to be the official number for Gantz. Toho has also announced they expect 10 billion yen ($122 million) for both parts (part 2 being released on 4/23), but they always project the highest possible outcome for their films. 7.5/8 billiion ($91-98 million) is more reasonable.
The other openers:
Red: 223,740,000 ($2.73 million); 183,196 admissions for the 2-day weekend on 297 screens. White Night: 78,625,500 ($.97 million); 60,367 admissions for the 2-day weekend on 210 screens.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Estimates
I haven't read or watched Gantz, but I'm sure it was toned down in theaters to attract a wide audience since Toho allowed a budget of a whopping 4 billion yen ($48.5 million) for both parts.
The movie does look pretty good though, and Japan is definitely producing better visual appealing films these days.
Trailer:
The film is rated PG-12.
G: General audiences, all ages admitted.
PG-12: Some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 12. Parental or adult accompaniment recommended. The film contains mature themes, partial nudity, explicit language, some violence, etc. which is inappropriate for people under 12.
R15+: No children under 15 admitted. The film contains adult themes, nudity, explicit language, violence, sexual situations, etc. which is inappropriate for people under 15.
R18+: No children under 18 admitted. The film contains adult themes, detailed violence, explicit sex, sexual violence, pornographic content, hentai, drug use, etc. which is inappropriate for people under 18.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Estimates
No updated totals from this past weekend have been released.
However, The Social Network did drop 28% this weekend (for 125 million yen or $1.5 million) though, and should be around 775 million yen ($9.5 million) when totals are released. The King's Speech is going to steal much of the award buzz The Social Network was counting on, so it's too early to really say.
It needs to gross about 1.7 billion to hit $20 million.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Estimates
The Social Network comes in at an estimated 788 million yen ($9.6 million); 600,000 admissions after 3 weeks. So it added approx. 281 million yen ($3.4 million) for the week.
1.65 billion yen ($20 million) is doable, but will prove to be much more difficult now without the award buzz it once had, and a likely Best Picture loss next month (same weekend the likely winner, The King's Speech, happens to open). 1.4 billion yen ($17 million) looks like the more reasonable finish, IMO.

Mother's Day (Shochiku) may debut in the Top 10 ahead of Goseiger vs Shinkenger and Partners 2.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
Gantz exceeded 800,000 admissions after 7 days in release.
The average ticket price during the weekend was 1,305 yen, which would put Gantz at approx. 1.05 billion yen ($12.8 million) heading into it's second weekend. However, ticket prices were only 1,000 yen on Tuesday, so the gross is probably closer to 950 million - 1 billion yen right now.
Still looking good for about 1.1 million admissions; 1.3/1.4 billion yen after just 9 days in release.

Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Weekend Forecast
Saturday Results from the Usual Locations:
Openers:
Mother's Day is exceeding expecations, and has sold 53.1% more than White Night last Saturday. -If that remains in range tomorrow too, then Mother's Day will open to 95-105,000 admissions or 110-120 million yen ($1.3/1.4 million).
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps sold 38.1% of the tickets Red sold last Saturday. -If that remains accurate for the weekend, then Wall Street 2 will open to 65-70,000 admissions or 85-100 million yen ($1-1.2 million) for the 2-day. The film opened on a Friday, so the 3-day would likely be 100-120 million yen ($1.2-1.4 million).
Jeanne Waltz sold just 59.5% of the tickets White Night sold last Saturday. -If that number remains accurate for the weekend, then Jeanne Waltz will open to 35-40,000 admissions or 45-50 million yen ($550-600,000).
The Town only sold 23.9% of the ticket Red sold last Saturday. -If that holds for the weekend, then The Town will only open to about 40-45,000 admissions or 55-60 million yen ($650-750,000).
Holdovers:
Gantz dropped 46.3% compared to last Saturday. -If that holds for tomorrow (should be better though coming off the opening weekend), then Gantz will have about 225-250,000 admissions or 315-330 million yen ($3.8-4.1 million). That's comparable to SP: The Motion Picture's second weekend of 316 million yen, but likely out of range of Space Battleship Yamato's second weekend of 395 million yen.
Red dropped 42.2% compared to last Saturday. -If that holds for the weekend (again, coming off the opening weekend should give it better hold), then Red will have about 100-110,000 admissions or 130-140 million yen ($1.6/1.7 million).
The Social Network dropped 37.2% compared to last Saturday. -If that holds tomorrow, then The Social Network will gross about 75-80 million yen ($900,000-1 million).
1,778 Stories of Me and My Wife dropped 36.4% compared to last Saturday. -If that holds, then 1,778 Stories will gross about 55-60 million ($650-750,000).
White Night dropped 50.9% compared to last Saturday. -If that holds for the weekend (same as Gantz and Red above being in their second weekends), then White Night will have about 30-35,000 admissions or 40-45 million yen ($475-550,000).

So, based on the partial Saturday Results, I would guess the Top 10 this Weekend being:
