The game is over. The King's Speech is in position to win 7 Oscars, maybe even more. I can't remember the last time the game has turned so quickly and decisively.

Re: Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) wins DGA!
It's so sad because while The King's Speech is a pleasantly tony diversion, the film represents a war: a great cast with spot-on instincts fighting against a misguided director's overbearing visual style.

Re: Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) wins DGA!
The Best Director Oscar is definitely still a race rather than conceded to Hooper. A lot of tv voters in the Director's Guild are familiar with Hooper and have great respect for acclaimed TV miniseries/movies like John Adams and Elizabeth 1, but not sure if that love translates to Academy film industry voters. Nolan's omission also helps Fincher a lot in the Oscar race.

Re: Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) wins DGA!
Fincher could still win Best Director, agreed.
But it's hard not to think Best Picture is completely tied up for TKS now.

My mind still goes crazy whenever I think about how the race was looking last Saturday before PGA was announced comparing how it is looking now. This must be the quickest turnaround ever.

Well I guess The King's Speech is going to win Best Picture now.
I really don't think it deserves to but I still loved the movie so i guess I can't complain.

Re: Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) wins DGA!
It is my favorite film of the year overall, so I'm happy for the development, even though I'm still stunned at the force of such development. I will still be pulling for Fincher in Best Director, not just because what he did before but also I agree with the majority that he is deserving this year too.

Re: Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) wins DGA!
While Hooper isn't at all deserving, Fincher losing steam would be more upsetting if the film earning him these plaudits was Zodiac rather The Social Network.

I agree with you there Gunslinger - had it been Zodiac losing out i'd be devestated. Then again i'd be greatful that it was atleast acknowledged with nominations rather than be criminally overlooked like it was.
Kings Speech winning DGA is a little sickening. Solid but average film, unfortunately clicking with the masses and the Academy. Now guaranteed to sweep the oscars. Damn. Best thing about it was Helena Bonham Carter.

I'm shocked. King's Speech definitely gets the Oscar.
I will never again underestimate the Borgnine factor.

It's sad when not even directors can recognize good directing.

This also shows TSN was never the frontrunner for Oscar in retrospect. The correlation between Oscar and critics awards the last few years made us jump to conclusion too hastily. Guilds are still by far the more important indicators.

Yeah. Unless the BP presenter says "And the Oscar goes to...The Social Network". That'd be the right time to question life and universe and all sorts of things.

I still think there is a race, I'm not entirely convinced TKS is going to win it.

Guilds are still by far the more important indicators. Yeah I'm wondering if TSN is even a #2, or rather more likely a #3 or lower like Sideways and LA Confidential. The younger generation/writing community/critics/Internet users total underestimated the backlash/non-interest of the older generation that make up a big portion of the Oscar voters. This isn't really a demographic-transcendent mass-appeal movie, as reflected by the lower box office for TSN compared to other Oscar nominees. True Grit or The Fighter just might have more support than TSN in the Academy, especially after we saw how Inception didn't get a directorial nomination.

Mark Zuckerberg is buying all of TKS' prizes. His revenge for the way TSN portrays him.

It doesn't even portrayal him poorly. Inaccurately sure, but poorly? Perhaps only for those who didn't pay attention to the movie closely enough.

SPEECH is getting Best Picture. It doesn't deserve it, but it will likely get it. Best Director would be the bigger joke. Wasn't impressed by the directing at all.
