Meryl Streep is a legend. I suppose Judi Dench is a legend. Kate Winslet, might, eventually end up a legend. Annette Bening is a good actress, due for a win..but a legend, she ain't.

She's also married to Warren Beatty. "Hollywood royalty" is perhaps a more apt term, but you get the idea. She's in a prestigious echelon above most others, including the other actresses in the category.
You can choose whatever exact word floats your boat.

I hope not. I know Bening is due for an Oscar but if you just see the difference in acting this year it cannot be matched by what TKAAR had to offer.

You can choose whatever exact word floats your boat. That has not prevented her from losing TWICE to the same actress (who is now 2/2 as far as nominaitons/wins go). Also, Peter O'Toole is definitely a legend, no other words to describe it. Yet, he lost his 8th nomination against Forest Whitaiker for whom it was his first.

Nothing you said is news to anyone. To call such a rant "banal" would be too kind even. The Oscar race is what it is. If you don't find it entertaining, don't click into the section, right? You could be working the phones, raising money for relief in Darfur. Hmm. I don't recall saying my post was ground-breaking (I actually said the opposite a couple times) or reading the rule where you can only post things if they contain new information in a positive light. Opinion-based comments on a movie forum? Jeez, I was pretty out of line

No, if she loses, I'll be angry. When I'm angry, I post more. I thought that was apparent.

Most of you are probably right in Bening winning this over Portman as in the Academy will feel she's too young for the Oscar and has an entire career ahead of her to win the big one, plus that goofy laugh of hers..

Re: Portmania peaked; Bening will win Best Actress - Club
I don't know. I definitely can see her winning over Portman and if she did, I'd be happy. Best Actress was a huge category this year (four of the five nominees are giving the performances of their careers, IMO).
In a perfect world, Michelle Williams or Nicole Kidman would be taking home the Oscar during Oscar night. Obviously neither of these will happen so I would be happy with Portman or Bening winning. In fact, I may even be pulling for Bening a little more than Portman.

I would love to see Bening win. I thought she was wonderful in AB and I think she's definitely overdue. I wouldn't be upset if Portman still won though, but I think she'll have more chances in the future.

Meh, the ethnicity factor doesn't matter that much when it comes to winning. It is not like Washington's win was that long ago back in 2006.

Outside the little bubble of the Oscar talkers, nobody is talking about Benning.

Among a shitload of others Portman has BFCA, drama Globe, SAG. Benning has what? Comedy Globe, NYFCC and one of those female critics awards. LOL.

Indeed. The whole "common man" angle doesn't matter much in terms of the Oscars. No one outisde the Oscar bubble was talking much about movies like The Hurt Locker or La Vie en Rose. Not really.

Um, lots of people were talking about The Hurt Locker.

Then you move in a very different circle than I do, 'cos I heard almost no "mainstream" people discussing it until after it won the Oscar and was available on DVD.

Am I the only person who could see Jennifer Lawrence pulling a huge upset?

If by mainstream you mean your friends then that's not really a good indicator at all. But last year it was THL as the obvious frontrunner and Avatar/IB as possible upsets.

Well, yeah, I do mean my friends, but I think it still speaks to the original point: in the Oscar race, it doesn't necessarily always matter if "average Joes" aren't talking about something or someone.
