 Re: The Secret of Kells
Beautifully drawn in the manner of the celtic illuminations of the book referred to in the title, The Secret of Kells is a splendid animated feature film that captures the light of the dark ages. Rife with symmetries, knots, and nature the animation is a reminder that stylization can trump cgi technology when imaginatively applied. The story is a snapshot of the era in which the Irish saved civilization. Hard to believe that this splendid film didn't get a theatrical run in North America, though it did get nominated for the best animated film Oscar. If works of art like this remain unseen, we will surely be plunged into a new dark age before too long. 15 out of 5. Note: One doesn't have to look further than The Secret of Kells to find the source of inspiration for the design of Disney's Tangled lead character...

C+ It is only 75 minutes long, but that's okay - - there can always be another screening of How To Train Your Dragon for the ADHD crowd.

I quite enjoyed it. Great fun to look at and follow. One doesn't have to look farther than the 80s TV show The Critic to find the source of inspiration for the design of The Secret of Kells. In all honesty, I think Disney's "Rapunzel" had been in production long before this film was released.

They decided to do something similar with Irish art.

 Re: The Secret of Kells
Below Wolfwalkers, but above Song of the Sea, Kells may have been their first film, but for me it was the tiebreaker, and the Irish Folk-Fantasy trilogy comes out with a thumbs up!
It's got the usual mix of lore, people turning into animals, unreasonable guardians, etc... That are the core of these films. The main character is very likeable, as are his friends, and I was rooting for them to succeed in their quest even if I didn't fully understand what it was at all times. I also didn't really understand the time jump at the end, but it was still a heart warming reunion when he returned to his uncle as a man of victory.
