Re: Critics' top picks of 2010
I alway enjoys these types of lists.
Nice showing for Never Let Me Go (no. 35), considering it divisive reputation! Higher on the list than Rabbit Hole, Fish Tank, How to Train Your Dragon, etc.

Re: Critics' top picks of 2010
Take a look back at the picks for the past ten years to see how meaningless this type of list really is - - corporate media critics are the last place I go for opinion on films.

I really can't remember the last time the #1 pick for critics was so unanimous than it is for TSN. Perhaps Schindler's List? Yeah, this is just crazy. It already has exactly as many top spots as Eternal Sunshine and Sideways did overall. And more than There Will Be Blood. ROTK and NCFOM had more, but since there are probably 200+ lists to go, The Social Network will become the first film with over 100 top picks.

Re: Critics' top picks of 2010
The website updated - nearly 500 lists in now. The Top 10 contains the same films, just in a different order.
Top 10:
10. The Ghost Writer 9. The Kids Are All Right 8. 127 Hours 7. True Grit 6. The King's Speech 5. Winter's Bone 4. Black Swan 3. Toy Story 3 2. Inception 1. The Social Network
Most #1 spots:
1. The Social Network - 100 (holy shit) 2. Inception - 39 3. Black Swan - 34 4. Toy Story 3 - 29 5. Carlos - 26
Highest-ranked film with not a single top spot - Kick Ass (#22)
Interesting how little passion there is for The Fighter. It is at #12 with 103 list mentions, but has only one single top spot.

Re: Critics' top picks of 2010
Hmm. If there's a backlash against The Social Network (won't happen, I know ) maybe Black Swan could win Best Picture at the Oscars with all of those #1 ranks . Wishful thinking on my part.

Re: Critics' top picks of 2010
They're at over 550 lists now. The Social Network's domination continues...that's quite insane!
Though Inception is picking up with #1 spots - 55 already. TDK got 77, so let's see how close thsi can get.

i feel like idiots are just defaulting to the social network at this point, because it is supposedly "the movie of NOW™".
if you can even justify it being a GOOD movie (let alone a great one), then you are probably full of shit. the trailer is a better film than the actual product.

What's with the Social Network's critical reaction? It's a solid Oscar movie but no better than like Slumdog Millionaire, which wasn't anything more than an above average bait movie itself. It's a Joe Johnson not a Lebron
They're treating it like a No Country for Old Men landmark masterpiece. Not even close IMO.

The Social Network is a very good, quite compelling legal drama with strong acting and a fantastic score, but I'm so tired of hearing how it's DEFINING THIS GENERATION IN A WAY NO OTHER FILM CAN EVER DREAM OF. I just didn't connect with it in that way. At all.

Re: Critics' top picks of 2010
The problem is that NCFOM also had There Will Be Blood, each of which is on the shortlist of the most acclaimed films of the last decade. If TSN was released then or vise versa, the domination will not be as obvious or even exist. It's all about relative to the competitions, and this year, no one comes close to TSN in term of # of 100s at Metacritic for example, so the result of the top 10 lists should not be a surprise.

I hate years like this when the Best Picture winner is so obvious. I wish enough voters would figure The Social Network is going to win anyway so they placed something else at #1 on their ballots .

I guess. not trying to be condescending. if anything, i'd say the people trumpeting this movie as a generation defining what-the-fuck-ever are being far more condescending than i am in dismissing them. the idea that the social network is some deep statement on culture and youth and society is being manufactured out of thin air, because it certainly isn't present in the movie.

Re: Critics' top picks of 2010
I love how Ebert gave Black Swan *** 1/2, then a few days later he named it the third best film of the year--over several films he gave **** to, including The American, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, Never Let Me Go, Somewhere, Winter's Bone, and several more.
With respect to Ebert, his top three (destined-winner The Social Network, noble runner-up The King's Speech, cool-dark-horse Black Swan) felt very inorganic, as if he was trying to contribute to the established Oscar-season narrative with his list rather than just naming his honest-to-God favorites.

Ebert has long since passed the point of relevancy.
