 Best Director
Well, you know it was inevitable. This is the thread for the last major category not mentioned yet. And this year is not that easy to predict in this category. Will Michael Moore get nominated for his "documentary"? Will Mel Gibson be rewarded for his risky project? Or will Scorsese finally receive his well-deserved award?
What do you think?
My predictions for the nominations are (winner in bold):
Mel Gibson (The Passion of the Christ)
Mike Nichols (Closer)
Martin Scorsese (The Aviator)
Terry George (Hotel Rwanda)
Oliver Stone (Alexander)

Mike Nichols-Closer
Martin Scorsese-The Aviator
Oliver Stone-Alexander
Mel Gibson-The Passion of the Christ
Michel Gondry-Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Long shot, but who knows)
I see Martin winning Best Director, but I don't see The Aviator winning Best Picture.

Well, Scorsese, one of the greatest living American directors, hasn't really made a bad movie yet, and The Aviator didn't have any advanced bad buzz as Gangs of the New York did last year, and Gangs got 10 nominations even with all the controversies.

hehe
I just needed to point out that all of Scorsese's films weren't stellar, not that these 3 were horrible. But the idea that he hasn't made a "bad" film, well, it's just not true.
Very few directors are without clunkers.

I'd actually say, none are.

There will definitely be a 3/5 split for picture/director this year.
1. Mike Nichols (Closer)
2. Marc Forster (Finding Neverland)
3. Michael Moore (Fahrenheit 9/11)
4. Oliver Stone (Alexander)
5. Jean-Piere Jeunet (A Very Long Engagement) - Alejandro Amenábar or Walter Salles could get this 'foreign picture director' slot too

You are right... bad isn't a good word...
I would classify Gangs of New York as...
Atrocious. Awful. Disgusting. Pointless. Masterbatory. Misdirected.

Walter Salles - The Motorcycle Diaries
Marc Forster - Finding Neverland
Michael Gondry - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Martin Scorcese - The Aviator
Jean Pierre Jeunet - Un long dimanche de fiançialles
Clint Eastwood - Million Dollar Baby
Quentin Tarantino - Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (illegible?)
Or maybe the directors of:
Bad Education (Almodovar), Closer (Nichols) or Hotel Rwanda

Martin Scorcese (The Aviator)
Robert Linklater (Before Sunset)
Michael Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)
Mike Nichols (Closer)
Alexander Payne (Sideways) - look at the reviews!
Scorcese shall win.

Here goes Oliver Stone's chance for a nod this year, while Marc Foster keeps gaining buzz. Mel Gibson's decision not to promote The Passion also lowers his chances, but he might still get a nod considering all the risk he took upon him with this project.
My new predictions:
Marc Foster (Finding Neverland)
Mel Gibson (The Passion of the Christ)
Mike Nichols (Closer)
Michael Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)
Martin Scorcese (The Aviator)

I think you would have seen a thread or 2 about it, if it was coming out. But then again maybe they are going to surprise us with the little known 4th book.

I just don't think that he can land such a rave-filled hit like Mystic River twice in a row.

This film is starting to coem just out of nowhere and beginnign to stor ALOT of buzz.
I think it will play out like Mystic River if it's good enough and fast enough to keep up.
However.... I can really see 3 acting nods and even a Best Pic nod.... but if it is nominated for best pic, my guess would be this will be the traditional film to be nominated for best pic and not for best director...
I, too, don't think Eastwood will get nominated for a character driven film twice in a row, especially since he lost out last year and this year oesn't even look like a chance for a win. but the biggest factor, he might get nominated for Best Actor!!!
