Thankfully the totals are not going backwards due to the exchange rate with cinematoday.jp and BOM confirming this. Instead, the weekly (or weekend) gross seems to be added to last weekend's totals.

And with that possible annoyance resolved,

Security Police stays on top for the third consecutive week as it comes closer to $30 million. The film should still finish in the low/mid 40 millions. The sequel will be released in the Spring.

Decent/Solid opening for Ghost. With as much buzz that seemed to be around it, I was expecting a more though.

Despicable Me clears $10 million! I think it's the first non-Pixar Hollywood animated film to do so since... Bolt maybe? I'll have to do some research. Mid teens here.

Pretty Cure is still holding pretty well, and will soon reach $10 million as well.

And I do believe Eclipse has already grossed more than Twilight after just two weeks in release. May go as high as $6 million (2x Twilight's gross).

Umizaru's chances at $100 million are still alive, and strong after another good weekend. There really shouldn't be anything stopping it from achieving the milestone.

The Incite Mill nears $15 million. A total of $16 million or so is a great success.

Knight & Day is starting to fall back now, but it just might be able to crawl to $30 million. It's the second biggest Hollywood film of the year that was not released in 3D.

Like Eclipse, Saw 3D is now the highest grossing Saw film of the franchise. Admissions probably aren't much higher, if at all, but 3D has done wonders for Hollywood this year in Japan.

The Lady Shogun and Her Men, like Knight & Day, still has a slim chance of hitting $30 million.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Weekend Rankings
Still no Friday number reported, but Saturday (would be the bigger day anyway) admissions from the usual locations (10-15% of the market) have been released:

Title/ticket sold/tickets available

Harry Potter 7 - 40,540/80,657

For comparison with other big openers this year (Saturday):

Looks like Harry Potter 7 will come in with about Y1.1 billion ($13.5 million) for the 2-day weekend, and something like Y1.4/1.5 billion ($17.5 million) for the 3-day. The film opened on 880 screens, the third highest all-time.

Surprisingly, news about Harry Potter this weekend has been quite dead. Still no actual numbers released, besides the Saturday admission figure at certain locations I posted about above.

However, people are predicting the film did gross around Y1.1 billion (just over $13 million) for the weekend. That doesn't included the early Friday opening day which should again, bring it near Y1.4/1.5 ($17/18 million) for the 3-Day.

If it turns out to be true (may know later today), it's not really that great of an opening. It's only better than Half-Blood Prince in the series, but HBP opened on a Wednesday. And the other two Friday openers, GOF and OOTP, both opened higher, too. Also, not to keep piling on before solid numbers are released, but it's very likely DHpI will see a decrease in gross and admissions once again.

"THE LAST MESSAGE: Umizaru," currently the highest-grossing Japanese live-action movie of this year, has been picked up for distribution in 12 other countries, with more being negotiated. Since the film's opening on September 18, it has been seen by roughly 5.22 million people and earned more than 7.8 billion yen, and it is still playing in theaters across the country.

So far, the countries with confirmed distributors are France, Russia, Brazil, Hong Kong, India, China, Taiwan, Singapore, United States, Mexico, Peru, and Argentina. The Japanese press has highlighted the fact that the list includes all 4 BRICs (an economic term referring to Brazil, Russia, India, and China).

"THE LAST MESSAGE" is the third film in the "Umizaru" series, but it is the first to be done in 3D. The second film, "Umizaru: Limit of Love," grossed 7.1 billion yen during its theatrical run in 2006, making it the #1 domestic live-action film of that year.

The news was just revealed yesterday/today, so it may take awhile for more details. The international release will begin next March, starting with the rest of Asia according to the original source here

BOM:

Quote:
Japan was Deathly Hallows Part 1's fourth-highest territory, conjuring up $14 million on 885 screens. Elsewhere in Asia, China notched $9 million on 3,100 screens, though that's currently a very rough estimate.

not sure if those numbers are just for Saturday and Sunday or the 3 days opening

It would be for the 2-Day. The estimated $14m would give it the second biggest opening weekend of the year, and possibly the 10th biggest all-time (can't drop any percentage point to make it), but probably 11th all-time opening weekend in USD. The opening in Yen is fairly low, unfortunately though.

The 3-Day should be around $17/18 million.

I was assuming the $14 million was for Harry Potter's 2-day, but it's actually the 3-day...

The 2-day weekend gross was Y937,409,100 ($11.2 million) with 766,633 admissions , while the 3-day was Y1.176 billion ($14.1 million) with 960,000 estimated admissions.

In Yen, that's the 6th biggest opening weekend of the year, and last in the Harry Potter series in USD and Yen. In USD this year, it'll come down to actuals because Toy Story 3, Bayside Shakedown 3, and Umizaru 3 all opened between $11.0-11.4 million. So it'll be as high as the 3rd biggest opening in USD this year, or as low as the 6th biggest opening weekend of the year in USD.

It's a big opening, but definitely underwhelming.

SP: The Motion Picture crossed 2 million admissions, exceeded Y2.5 billion ($30 million) after 4 weeks in release.

More numbers will be available later today.

Y900 million (almost $11 million). It's pretty much finished now though, so a total of about $11 million for it.

Most of the weekend numbers:

SP: The Motion Picture - Y186 million ($2.3 million) estimated fourth weekend / Y2.5 billion ($30 million) total.
Paranormal Activity 2 - Tokyo Night - Y41,685,000 ($500,000) estimated opening on 208 screens.
Eclipse - Y44 million ($530,000) estimated third weekend.
Despicable Me - Y76 million ($915,000) estimated fourth weekend.
Heart Catch Pretty Cure - Y65 million ($780,000) estimated fourth weekend.

Y900 million (almost $11 million). It's pretty much finished now though, so a total of about $11 million for it.

Cool. Thanks.

9. Leonie Kadokawa Pictures $231,210 1 60 $3,854 0 $231,210
10. Saw 3D Asmik Ace $193,208 4 99 $1,951 -44% $3,732,371

Slightly higher opening than estimates had Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I. The opening still comes in as the second lowest in the series just ahead of the Half-Blood Prince that opened to $10.3 million (2-day), $17.8 million (5-day) in 2009. In Yen and admissions, the film ranks last in opening weekends in the series, unfortunately. It really need that 3D boost.

With this being the first Potter in the fall/winter since Goblet of Fire, it'll be interesting to track, and projecting a total so early is definitely not easy. However, it's probably safe to predict $100 million or more is highly unlikely with this opening. But thanks to the exchange rate being more favorable this time than for previous films, it should manage to match the $88-91 million range the last three films finished with despite likely attendance lose yet again.

Another strong weekend for SP: The Motion Picture, now having grossed over $30 million after 4 weeks in release. The TV police drama adaptation is still targeting a total in the mid-40 millions.

So-so second weekend for the remake of the classic, Ghost. A total near $10 million is probably a little disappointing.

Despicable Me is still holding strong, and should make it to $15 million before it's finished. Definitely one of the more surprising runs this fall.

Heart Catch Pretty Cure! sees the second best hold in the Top 10 as it edges closer to $10 million. The film looks to gross nearly identical the amount of it's predecessor ($12 million) from this past March.

In USD, Eclipse has now grossed more than Twilight and New Moon combined. With New Moon decreasing from Twilight, it looked like Eclipse was destinated for failure. And it too is a small surprise from this fall. Eclipse will end it's run around $7 million.

Expected and predictably average opening for Paranormal Activity 2. Might crawl it's way to $3 million.

I thought Umizaru 3 would hit $100 million this weekend a few weeks ago, or at least during this week, but the last few drops haven't been too good. So it's still going to be a little bit longer before it hits the milestone. Most likely the Dec. 3-4th weekend. And it needs one more weekend in the Top 10 to match Bayside Shakedown 3, Toy Story 3, and The Borrower Arriety which all three remained in the Top 10 this year for 11 weeks each. I'm hoping it can squeak out a 12th weekend.

Nice opening for Leonie in limited release. I didn't see anyone predicting a Top 10 debut.

... Saw 3D is still hanging around in the Top 10 after 4 weeks even though it ranked 15th in admissions. Pretty much all of it's screens must be 3D. It prevented Knight & Day, The Lady Shogun and Her Men, and The Incite Mill from making it this weekend. It's probably grossed more than all the previous Saw films combined by now. It's gonna gross $4m!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows opens high as expected, but a few other films this year opened higher.

SP: The Motion Picture debuts on the charts after 4 weeks and will continue to climb several positions over the next few weeks.

And there is a very close battle between Knight & Day and The Lady Shogun and Her Men at the bottom of the Top 20 Films of 2010 by Gross (USD). It'll come down to which one plays longer. Both are also very, very close to taking the 20th position away from Liar Game on the Top 20 Films of 2010 by Gross (Yen).

But besides Harry Potter appearing, and zooming up the charts soon, and SP: The Motion Picture climbing as well, this year is almost finished with no other significant movement going on. The new Box Office Year begins in just 6 days from today, with several December films (Space Battleship Yamato, Norwegian Wood, Tron: Legacy, and Partners: The Movie II) looking to start off 2011 strong.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 2010 Charts Updated

*Harry Potter is locked to be No.1 for the last weekend of 2010, so including it above with 2 weeks.

*Umizaru 3 is 99% certain to remain in the Top 10 for the last weekend of 2010, so including it above with 11 weeks.

I will likely post a few more lists similar to the ones above before I move over to the 2011 thread I created last month on Dec. 1st.

Weekend Forecast
Nov. 27-28, 2010

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part I) (WB) 2
2. SP: The Motion Picture (Toho) 5
3. Ghost: I Want To Hold You Again (Paramount/Shochiku) 3
4. Despicable Me (Toho-Towa) 5
5. Heart Catch Pretty Cure! Fashion and Adventures in Paris!? (TOEI) 5
6. Paranormal Activity 2 - Tokyo Night (Presido) 2
7. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Kadokawa Pictures) 4
8. Umizaru 3: The Last Message (Toho) 11
9. Leonie (Kadokawa Pictures) 2
10. The Incite Mill: 7-Day Death Game (WB) 7

May have to include The Incite Mill in the Most Weeks in the Top 10 list above since it'll likely take the No.10 spot away from Saw 3D this weekend, which would then give it 6 weeks (non-consecutive) in the top 10. It ranked 11th last weekend.

No wide openers this weekend, but Toho starts the new BO year off with Space Battleship Yamato on Wednesday, Dec. 1st.

Most recent trailer:

The theme from the anime was also played by the NYPD Marching Band during yesterday's Macy's Day Thanksgiving Parade.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010)
2009 only added two films (Rookies and HP6) to the Top 50 films of all time in local currency despite being the second biggest year of the decade, but this year we have five new entries (one in each tier  ), only behind 2004.

Six (matching 2004) if Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows can develop very strong legs, but making 7.9+ is a very difficult mark with the numbers that are known so far during it's run.
