 Re: Conviction
. Guess what?!? Conviction is like the bestest After School Special ever!!!
As a feature film? Errrr... it got the job done, but not much more.
Of course, you can't ignore the acting elite on parade here in funny bad age makeup and pleasantly overstarched characterizations - - I mean, listen to the cast beyond Hillary Swank (who we all know is a specialist in this role) and Sam Rockwell (who does this character in his sleep) - -
Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis, Melissa Leo, Peter Gallagher
- - that's the cast of an imaginary Academy Award® winning indie movie I saw in my dreams in 1995!
So, yeah... ummmm - - it's very okay.
Catch it on TV in a few years and you'll likely be mildly delighted with it's message of dogged hope and dauntlessness.
4 out of 5.

B, good acting ensemble. Slow to get into but picks up along the way.

 Re: Conviction
This is maybe the toughest call of the year for me. On one hand, Conviction is compelling. On the other, it felt like a 100 minute outline of what should've been a movie that was at least an hour longer than that. For example, in the first third of the movie, Waters (Swank) is barely getting by in law school. Then she "acts" as a lawyer, stuff happens, and the movie ends. I'm guessing she passed, but the movie never quite explains how exactly she does it. And other things like her divorce, and Nancy Taylor's (Melissa Leo's) motivation against Kenny (Rockwell) causing his false imprisonment, and how he was even tied to the case in the first place; they're all just glossed over.
Instead the movie is more about the bond between brother and sister, and on that level it works.
It's worth a look, but I wouldn't got out of your way to see it.

 Re: Conviction
Really good movie. It does seem to leave out quite a few details, but it's an effective film and a moving story. Much better than I was expecting.

 Re: Conviction
I'm still not expecting much. You also loved North Country.

Like this guy told me Sanctum was pretty solid, but I was like, "No. Fuck you. You liked friggin' North Country. Jog on!"

 Re: Conviction
They are comparable films and I didn't enjoy North Country. It's not like it doesn't make sense.

 Re: Conviction
They both star an Oscar-winning actress and are based on true stories.
