Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Weekend Rankings
Kimi ni Todoke had the best hold this weekend and will be 7th (slight chance at 6th) this weekend. It'll remain in the Top 10 for at least one more week, too.
SHOCHIKU
1. Umizaru 3: The Last Message (Toho) 6 2. Knight and Day (Fox) 3 3. The Incite Mill: 7-Day Death Game (WB) 2 4. The Lady Shogun and Her Men (Ohoku) (Asmik Ace) 4 5. The Expendables (Shochiku) 2 6. Lightning Cherry Blossom (Raiou) (Toho) 1 7. From Me to You (Kimi ni Todoke) (Toho) 5 8. Sakuradamon-gai no Hen (TOEI) 2 9. You Are Umasou (TTC) 2 10. Resident Evil IV: Afterlife
Switch You Are Umasou with Thirteen Assassins, and this will likely be the National Top 10 Rankings as well since both chains almost matched up.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Weekend Rankings
Sometime last month I posted that "Confessions" was selected as Japan's entry for the Best Foreign Film Oscar this year at the Academy Awards. I don't think the film has a chance of actually winning if it's nominated at the Oscars, but there's been an update that might help in the nomination process. Japan's Oscar entry keeps company with other int'l award winners, including Mexico's 'Leap Year' and Canada's 'Oliver Sherman.' TORONTO -- Tetsuya Nakashima's Confessions, Japan's entry in the foreign language Oscar race, earned the People's Choice Award at the 39th Festival of Nouveau Cinema in Montreal.
The revenge thriller that stars Takako Matsu as a high school teacher who suspects her students may be implicated in the murder of her 4-year-old daughter, was a commercial box office success in Japan this summer.
The Montreal festival also gave its juried Louve d'Or for best international feature to the Mexican film Ano Bisiesto (Leap Year), a debut feature by Australian ex-pat director Michael Rowe, while the festival jury gave U.S. director Mike Ott a special mention for Littlerock.
Other Montreal winners: The best acting award was shared by Avtandil Tetradze for his star-turn in Susa, the Georgian film from Rusudan Pirveli, and Sibel Kekilli for the German film When We Leave, by Feo Aladag.
And the best feature from the Focus sidebar was the Canadian film Oliver Sherman, by Ryan Redford.
In all, 295 films from 51 countries screened in Montreal over 12 days to October 24.http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/c ... veau-32264In my opinion, Confessions had the best performance of the Summer, and arguably the year (Avatar being it's competition). Confessions opened on 266 screens on June 5th, and topped the Box Office for 4 straight weekends. It never gained any screens, and had no Holiday boosts many leggy films benefit from. The film also remained in the Top 10 for 8 weeks, increasing it's gross for 3 consecutive weekends, to achieve a multiplier of 15. Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Weekend Rankings
Weekend Summary, Oct. 23-24, 2010

Int'l $2,070,273 2 278 $7,447 -18 $6,977,203 4. Expendables, The Shochiku $1,463,281 2 280 $5,226 -33 $6,010,792 5. The Lady Shogun and Her Men (Ohoku) Asmik Ace $1,365,813 4 311 $4,392 -19 $22,267,102 6. From Me to You (Kimi ni Todoke) Toho $879,579 5 285 $3,086 -21 $15,877,248 7. Sakuradamongai No Hen TOEI $827,543 2 296 $2,796 -27 $3,788,047 8. The Lightning Cherry Blossom Tree (Raiou) Toho $790,965 1 300 $2,637 0 $1,059,626 9. Resident Evil: Afterlife Sony Int'l $645,124 7 372 $1,734 -24 $55,778,563 10. Thirteen Assassins Toho $545,983 5 312 $1,750 -23 $17,147,823Umizaru 3 remains at No.1 for the 6th consecutive weekend, coming closer to $100 million. It should clear the milestone towards the end of November. Knight and Day is still doing well, targeting a $25 million total. The Incite Mill may reach a total in the mid-teens rather than low-teens with that second weekend hold. The Expendables has the largest drop in the Top 10, but it's still a solid second weekend. If it can maintain these early legs, it just might make it to $10 million. Ohoku stays strong in it's 4th weekend. A total in the high 20's looks likely. Kimi ni Todoke wasn't have the best holds it's first few weeks in release, but the last couple weeks have turned that around as it has another good week. Pretty confident it will cross $20 million now. Sakuradamongai No Hen edges out Raiou's opening weekend, and will become a decent release from TOEI. Raiou opened early on Friday, so the opening weekend is slightly deflated. But it's still a rather weak debut, opening a bit less than projected. Resident Evil IV's last weekend in the Top 10 brings it less than $1 million away from becoming the 7th Biggest Film of 2010 (in USD). As long as it doesn't nosedive this weekend with several 3D films opening, it'll make it. Thirteen Assassins will have a tough struggle to $20 million.

The Incite Mill: 7-Day Death Game (WB) 3 5. Knight and Day (Fox) 4 6. Despicable Me (Toho/Towa) 1 7. Saw 3D (Asmik Ace) 1 8. The Lady Shogun and Her Men (Ohoku) (Asmik Ace) 5 9. And finally some fresh new films in the Top 10. The bottom half of the Top 10 was becoming quite low in gross.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Weekend Forecast
Security Police opened on 396 screens. That's one of the wider local releases (6th I think) of the year.
Early reports for Saturday are also strong, with Y500 million ($6.1 million) for the weekend looking possible.

Thanks Last weekend, 4 4 118,965,903 ($1.46 million) *,488,682,237 ($6 million) 280 2 エクスペンダブルズ Looks like it'll finish with around Y700-750 million (about $8.5 million). Regarding this weekend, Security Police: Chapter of Ambition is performing above expectations and may even reach Y600 million ($7.4 million) this weekend. That'd give it the 8th biggest opening of the year in USD, and 11th in Yen (8th is possible here, but it needs Y630 million to beat Up and Pokemon). Such an opening would result in a $40 million+ gross as well, with the average multiplier bringing it to Y3.5 billion ($43 million). Toho announced a goal of Y5 billion ($62 million) today, but they almost always overproject. Y4 billion ($50 million) is a more realistic and likely goal. http://www.daily.co.jp/gossip/article/2 ... 1447.shtmlThe sequel, Liberal Revolution, will be released in March.

This marks the pair’s first time acting together, but Omori claims portraying a couple felt completely natural and being able to play with a dog made the atmosphere on the set even more comfortable.
Dog ownership encompasses a wide range of emotions, so the film will not be exclusively dramatic. In particular, Kie Kitano will be playing a character who has a more light-hearted, comedic relationship with a dog.January 29thWhite Night A man is murdered shortly after his release from prison. Re: Japan Box Office (2011); Early Preview
2008 thread - viewtopic.php?f=12&t=43995&start=02009 thread - viewtopic.php?f=12&t=48809&st=0&sk=t&sd=a2010 thread - viewtopic.php?f=12&t=55322&start=0TOKYO -- The Japanese box office had an all-time record year in 2010, pulling in 220.7 billion yen ($2.66 billion), defying a stagnant economy and a shrinking population to register the highest attendances since 1974.
Domestic films had their best ever year, grossing 118.2 billion yen – just topping last year’s record numbers, while overseas fare recovered strongly from a poor 2009 to clock up 102.5 billion yen, according to figures from the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan.
2010 was the third year in a row that domestic product outsold imports, after having only so once in the previous 20 years.
Nevertheless, foreign films clawed back a few points of market share, from 43.1 percent in 2009, to 46.4 percent, mainly on the back of Hollywood 3D blockbusters; Avatar (15.6 billion yen), Alice in Wonderland (11.8 billion yen) and Toy Story 3 (10.8 billion yen), were the three biggest hits of the year, irrespective of origin.
The top domestic movies were the animated Karigurashi no Arrietty (The Borrowers) from Studio Ghibli, with 9.25 billion yen, 3D sequel Umizaru 3 The Last Message with 8.04 billion yen and another third installment, Bayside Shakedown 3 - Set the Guys Loose!, with 7.31 billion yen.
The fourth-placed film, Toei animation One Piece Strong World, with 4.8 billion, was the only non-Toho distributed movie in the top 13 grossing domestic films of the year.
Kokuhaku (Confessions), which missed out this week making the cut from short list to Foreign Language Oscar nominee, pulled in 3.85 billion yen to put it in seventh place domestically, produced and distributed by Toho.
3D ticket premiums helped boost average admission prices by around 50 yen to 1,266 yen, the first significant rise after years of gradual declines in an economy experiencing deflation.
The population is also falling: at this month’s coming of age ceremony, a record low of 1.24 million people celebrated the fact that they will reach the age of majority (20) this year. And yet despite this demographic disadvantage, admissions neared 175 million, with the number of screens creeping up to 3,412.
Toho, after another record year, is to experiment with reducing ticket prices in a number of areas from this spring in an attempt to boost attendances.http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/2 ... sets-766592010Eiren (Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan) 2010, Top 101. Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Weekend Forecast (SP is a big hit)
Cool. Thanks.
I'm really surprised with The Expendables' gross in Japan. Before it opened I thought it would have a shot at $15M, but now its toying with half that.

Weekend Admission Rankings, (TOHO, SHIKOKU, WARNER locations)
TOHO

1. SP: Chapter of Ambition (Toho) 1 2. Despicable Me (Toho/Towa) 1 3. Saw 3D (Asmik Ace) 1 4. Umizaru 3: The Last Message (Toho) 7 5. Knight and Day (Fox) 4 6. The Incite Mill: 7-Day Death Game (WB) 3 7. HeartCatch Pretty Cure: Fashion in the City of Flowers (TOEI) 1 8. TOHOSHINKI EXPO 2010 (Toho) 1 9. The Expendables (Shochiku) 3 10. The Lightning Cherry Blossom Tree (Raiou) (Toho) 2http://www.tohotheater.jp/index.htmlThe rankings by locations will be quite misleading this weekend. The previous Pretty Cure film ranked 9th at Toho locations last Spring, but was 2nd in the National Top 10. So the new film will be much higher than 7th. And Saw 3D is playing primarily on Toho screens, so it will be much lower than 3rd.

I don't know the reason behind the long delay. Anyway, the National Top 10 will be released in the early morning, but with all three major locations having reported their weekend rankings, I'd predict the National Top 10 (admissions) to look like: 1. SP: Chapter of Ambition (Toho) 1 2. HeartCatch Pretty Cure: Fashion in the City of Flowers (TOEI) 1 3. Despicable Me (Toho/Towa) 1 4. Umizaru 3: The Last Message (Toho) 7 5. Knight and Day (Fox) 4 6. Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Umizaru 3 clears 90 million USD
I made a mistake with the Saw 3D weekend number above. The 103 was actually the screen count. It's weekend gross was Y69 million ($.8 million), 39,785 admissions.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Umizaru 3 clears 90 million USD
I know BOM sucks and all for accurate final grosses in international markets, but when/why did their figure for Avatar jump up to $186.8m when last I saw it was at around $160m or so? Exchange rate deal?
Usually they end up shortchanging the films in their final gross, not the other way around.
