Wow that's pretty bad timing for a re-release....anyways here goes some quick questions

What to expect from Umizaru 3 I know it already opened to record breaking 11.3 according to BOM but what to expect in the end ?
How do you think will Gahoole (yes the Owl pic) will do since animation is always a good new in Japan :) ?
Avatar: Special Edition will be counted separately or with it be added to the original run ?
What is Red Requiem?
How does Saw generally fair there?
Is there any love for DM there? Have those minions been heavily marketed there as well?

If you have already answered these before (specially Umizaru 3) then sorry I was out for a week or so and did not read any of the posts last week

Well, $11.3m isn't record breaking, just very big and on par (slightly better) than BS3, TS3, and Arrietty from July.

A final total is hard to project because it's the first major local 3D release in Japan. But with just the opening number (it did $16.7m in 3days, Monday being a holiday), expect no less than $75m, with a solid chance at $100m.

As for the other questions,

All Hollywood animated films do poor numbers in Japan, with the exception of Pixar. People just don't care for any of them. So don't expect much for Legends of the Guardians and Despicable Me. High single digits/Low teens maybe.

Red Requem is the 3D movie adaptation of a television show from a few years back. It's being released by an independent studio, so it likely won't see a wide release.

Saw films do next to nothing.

Now I probably made it sound like Avatar's 3D competition is almost nothing now, with only Umizaru 3 among them doing big numbers until Battle Royale (3D) and Harry Potter 7 open in November, but getting enough 3D screens is the problem it will have opening in the middle of several 3D releases. And having only been out of theaters 5 months ago won't help it.

You did make it sound like huge competition for it :D and I think it is a terrible date (could have waited for January or so), though my question was for adding up the grosses what do they generally do in reporting re-release grosses?

The first Umizaru in 2002 only grossed about $15m.

The second film was huge back in 2006, the second biggest local-film behind Ghibli's Tales From Earthsea. It grossed Y7.1 billion which was $58.4m back then, but that would be $84m today.

And I'm not sure what will be done with the re-release of Avatar's gross. It is listed as a separate film at Eiga.com and other movie sites, but may be included with an asterisk or something. The two re-releases of This Is It was included in the original gross if that's any indication, but those re-releases were close to the original release of the film.

I wonder if the Battle Royale rerelease will perform well. I'd love to see this in theatres!

1 1 Umizaru 3: The Last Message (Toho) 2
2 N Kimi ni Todoke (Toho) 1
3 2 Resident Evil: Afterlife (Sony) 3
4 N Thirteen Assassins (Toho) 1
5 3 Mobile Suit Gundam: Awakening of the Trailblazer (Shochiku) 2
6 4 Villain (Toho) 3
7 5 Beck (Shochiku) 4
8 8 The Borrower Arrietty (Toho) 11
9 7 Flowering Dogwood (Toho) 6

Everything is looking great for Kimi ni Todoke, Bluebomb!

This might be the first weekend ever that only one Hollywood film will be in the Top 10. Eat, Love, Pray will need a great hold to prevent that from happening. Tsunami is a 2009 Korean film. I'm curious to know how well it did in Korea.

So what are we looking at here? Am I too optimistic in hoping for a $5m opening?

Yeah, that's a little too optimistic now that some admission figures have been released.

At the usual locations, Kimi ni Todoke is tracking at about 70% of Flowering Dogwood's admissions. If it remained around 70% of Flowering Dogwood for both days, we should be looking at an opening of approx. Y300m ($3.6m). I was hoping for $4m, but an opening a little below that mark should still get it over Y2b ($24m). It opened on 285 screens, which is lower than I expected too (I was thinking 310-320), but Toho have so many (big) films in release right now, 6 will make up the top 10 this weekened, that 285 is respectable.

Thiteen Assassins (also Toho) wasn't far behind Kimi ni Todoke in admissions from the usual locations on Saturday, so it will probably manage $3m or a little more this weekend.

And Umizaru 3 dropped 37% at the usual locations compared to last Saturday. If it maintained similar ticket sales for Sunday as well, we're looking at a 9day total of Y3b ($35.5m) or even a little more which is bigger than any film this year aside from Alice in Wonderland ($37.7m 9day total).

Alice in Wonderland - 3,536,898,695 ($37.7m), 9day total. Final gross - Y11.8b ($135.1m)
Umizaru 3 - 3,000,000,000+ ($35.5m+), 9day total. Final projected gross - ???)
The Borrower Arrietty - 2,617,703,408 ($29.9m), 9day total. Final projected gross - Y9.3b ($111m)
Bayside Shakedown 3 - 2,501,584,528 ($28.4m), 9day total. Near final projected gross - Y7.3 ($87m)
Toy Story 3 - 2,373,157,759 ($27.3m), 9day total. Near final projected gross - Y10.7b ($126.5m)

Umizaru 3: The Last Message:
2day total - Y956,960,566 ($11.3m), 612,211 admissions
3day total - Y1,430,954,460 ($16.7m), 939,950 admissions
6day total - Y2.25b ($26.7m), 1.5m admissions
7day total - Y2.5b ($29.6m), 1.67m admissions

The 7day total was released and given that total, over a Y3 billion 9day total is definitely happening.

Umizaru 3 is looking at a 9day (two week) total of about Y3.2b ($38m). That's just about $10m higher than all three big July releases (Arrietty, Toy Story 3, and Bayside Shakedown 3) after 9days, and even edges Alice in Wonderland's massive 9day USD total out if it does Y3.2b.

This seriously puts $100m+ in play.

THR is reporting a $2.8m third weekend (approx. -45%), and a $38.3m total for Resident Evil: Afterlife after 17 days.

It dropped harder this weekend than last weekend if THR is accuracte. That is still a huge third week total, already outgrossing the previous installments with ease. A final gross of $50m is certainly doable, but not being able to stabilize is a bit concerning and a total in the mid/high 40's is probably safer (slightly more likely) at the moment.

Major Chain Weekend Rankings will be released soon.

What a terrific number for RE4! I'm sure it's mostly 3D helping.

Seriously, I think Harry Potter has a shot at $150 million...

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Weekend Forecast
In admissions it's a No.2 opening. But the audience for Thirteen Assassins is much older, so the higher tickets allowed it to edge Kimi ni Todoke out in gross.

However, it's a little less than expected either way. Showtimes may have suffered with Toho monopolizing the Top 11 (Flowering Dogwood ranks 11th) with 6 films. $20m is still in reach, but it'll be a challenge.

We're in luck, the actual for Kimi ni Todoke came in at Y233.9m ($2.8m) which is good enough to beat Thirteen Assassins in admissions and gross opening weekend. The average ticket price came in a good bit below the national average, so the majority of the audience are teens/young adults.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); Umizaru 3 continues to impress
Image

Umizaru 3: The Last Message has now grossed Y3,205,745,040 ($38.1m) with 2,113,264 admissions after only 9 days in release.

3D vs 2D Breakdown

3D (277 screens) - Y2,347,463,950 ($27.8m), 1,449,401 admissions
2D (190 screens) - Y858,281,090 ($10.3m), 660,863 admissions

A total over $100m is looking very likely now, as it's easily outpacing the big summer releases. Over $50m is also pretty much locked after just 16 days (probably up to $55m) in release, too, and very few films have managed that. With little competition this October, and good reviews, legs should be just fine.

After 9 days (two weeks in release),

Umizaru 3 - Y3,205,745,040 ($38.1m) with 2,113,264 admissions
The Borrower Arrietty - Y2,617,703,408 ($29.9m) with 2,062,166 admissions
Bayside Shakedown 3 - Y2,501,584,528 ($28.4m) with 2m admissions
Toy Story 3 - Y2,373,157,759 ($27.3m) with 1.5m admissions

The 9day Yen total is about Y300m lower than Alice in Wonderland (Y3.54b, 2.25m admissions / $37.7m), but $400k higher in USD.

One of the biggest if not the biggest year ever in Japan BO. Very strong grosses and i don't think we've seen this many $100m+ grossers. And that doesn't even include HP7-I, which may revive the franchise there being in 3D and all.

What other big movies are coming up at the end of the year?

Narnia will also do very well. The first one made $57 million in Japan, the second $27 million. With 3D, I expect no less than $40-45 million for the third.
