 Re: The Tech thread
i think epic 4g is way superior to droid 2. super amoled screen 1ghz cortex a8 hummingbird cpu, sgx545(best gpu for a phone) plus all goodies. it is getting 2.2 next month as well.
Best thing is if you dont like sprint you can get it in verizon(fascinate),tmobile(vibrant) AT@T(captivate).

 Re: The Tech thread
WTF, Oracle is suing Google for writing software in Java because of GPL? This is seriously messed up and could have serious effects on the open source community. I guess Larry Ellison is friend of Steve Jobs and bought Sun to purposely try to screw Google.

 Re: The Tech thread
OK, it's more about interpreting JVM bytecodes. Still the timing and everything are just weird. They could go after a lot of companies if using the same ground.

 Re: The Tech thread
if oracle takes that approach it will kill java. Main reason it proliferated big time was because it was "open" despite Sun controlling the changes.

 Re: The Tech thread
Got my Android 2.2 update.
I'm still finding some of the new additions. Anyone find anything note worthy yet?
My only gripe is that I'm used to using the slide motion to access my apps....now it's a click to get there. Not a big deal though. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

 Re: The Tech thread
The Oracle lawsuit is very, very interesting. It's been brewing for 5+ years, and is certainly part of the reason Oracle bought Sun. This will take years to sort out in court, and no matter the result, it can't end well.

 Re: The Tech thread
It's pretty good. With Google voice and Gmail call, I'm thinking Skype is facing big problems.

I've had Google Voice for over a year, really like it, but can't use it to it's entirety until Apple let's it take over their damn phone

 Re: The Tech thread
So I am getting an upgrade from Sprint on Oct 1st. For the first time I am going to drop a pretty penny on a smart phone (I got my pre for pretty cheap)
I will be getting either the new Samsung Epic 4G or the HTC EVO
Thoughts?

 Re: The Tech thread
Epic has Super AMOLED, much better gpu (if you are looking at mobile gaming down the line) and KEYBOARD.
Evo has slightly larger screen( 4.3" to 4"), 8MP camera(Epic has just 5MP camera) and HDMI and is thinner than EPIC. it is also slightly cheaper than Epic
I dont think you can go wrong with either. Better play with both and pick the one you like the most.
I am thinking you have wimax in your area. Otherwise neither phones are worth it as you have to pay $10 per month extra for these phones.

 Re: The Tech thread
BTW, Evo allows you to turn off HTC sense - follow these directions: http://www.gadgetsdna.com/turn-off-sens ... -2-1/3142/Not sure about Epic, but if all they did was replace the Home app, then it should be just as easy. Edit: same thing with Epic: http://phandroid.com/2010/09/01/how-to- ... e-epic-4g/

I've played around with various Android phones of my friends, of the more popular phones, I've monkeyed with: G1 Nexus One Droid Incredible Droid X I also pay a lot of attention to OS releases, changes, different UI's, etc. All in all, I greatly prefer stock Android, aka Google Experience phones, and I really hope these phones become more prominent with Android 3.0.

 Re: The Tech thread
Should also add that it'll be very interesting to see how things go if Verizon continues to use Android to neuter and restrict phones, especially if they get their own app store.

Just to point something out: so far they have not done any of that (meaning neuter or restrict phones), at least not with the Droid, so I don't see how you can accuse of "continuing" to do so.

 Re: The Tech thread
I have played around with both at the Sprint store, and both are amazing phones. I THINK I like the Epic a little better due to the beautiful AMOLED screen HOWEVER I am a bit worried about future lack of support. I know HTC is very good with updates and support (even on older phones) whereas samsung (in the past) has not been...i.e. the samsung moment that just got ditched, or even the intercept which is starting to fall apart...
thoughts?

You mean like the Fascinate where it's impossible to change your search engine from Bing without rooting the device and voiding your warranty? You also can't get Google Latitude, they broke multi-touch in the map app, no integration with GMAIL, etc. I won't even go into the pre-installed bloat ware they throw on android devices which you can't do a damn thing about.

 Re: The Tech thread
I wasn't aware of this, but after a quick googling, you can see that it's not true; switching to Google does not require a root: http://www.androidcentral.com/verizon-f ... search-fixYou can also easily download Google Maps if you so desire. And I'm sure the syncing with Gmail issue is also not true. Remember, Android is an open-source Operating System, not a Google OS; carriers are free to choose what they like on it - and they are doing it - but that doesn't mean they're locking you out of choice. Compare that approach with AT&T/Apple.
