Weekend Summary: Inception and Step Up 3D had solid holds this week. Step Up 3D, in particular, is holding up better than its predecessor even though it grossed more OW and being shown in 3D. Inception will rule again this weekend although Step Up will come within $100,000 of Inception. Cats & Dogs did slightly better than The Last Airbender and should debut just above The Last Airbender's OW. Toy Story 3 will come in at #4 in terms of gross but Vampires Suck may edge out Toy Story 3 this week in admissions. Toy Story 3 will make $11.3-$11.8m when all is said and done. Next week: Big weekend coming up. It should be a doozy.

August 26 PreviewIntense competition from the new openers will pulverize the remaining holdovers as 5 new releases vie for #1. The last week in August will bring much needed business back to the box office as last week was underwhelming with Vampires Suck/Cats & Dogs 2 disappointing and with the aftermath of the hostage situation in Manila, theaters hope to take advantage of the unfortunate event and entertain people for 2 hours to take their minds off this tragic incident. Avatar is the most talked about new release this week as 9 extra minutes are being added into the film. Many theaters are opting not to show this in favor of other movies and ticket prices are not as expensive as last time. Still, this will draw a considerable amount in IMAX and several locations. I think around $250,000-700,000 is a good estimate of the range it will gross. Even in IMAX, the bigger IMAX theatre is not giving the screen solely to Avatar. Instead, Avatar will share the screen with Inception and Toy Story 3. This has a shot at #1 but with the lack of screens, it is becoming seemingly unlikely that it will return to the #1 spot. It will generate a HUGE PSA though. The Expendables is one of the most anticipated movies this week. It's summer action fun packed into 2 hours and it could be just what the public needs after yesterday's hostage situation in Manila. It will be shown in most theaters although some places have given it limited amount of screenings on Thursday. It could gross anywhere from $500,000 to $1.2m. Unfortunately, it'll have big competition from... The Stool Pigeon is the other big release this week. It stars Nicholas Tse and Nick Cheung and is a role reversal for both men from The Beast Stalker. This is playing in almost all theaters and is being given prime spot release times (night time). The Beast Stalker only grossed $375,000 but this has gotten better reviews than that movie and should be able to generate more. I also see this in a rage of about $500,000 - $1m. The mitigating factor with these 2 movies not grossing over $1m is that there are so many releases this week. Besides these 3 movies, 2 more movies are expected to do solid business this weekend. Shanghai will finally be released this weekend as it searches for an audience not interested in 80's nostaglia, blue aliens part deux, cop/criminal drama relationships or lesbian affairs. This will be expected to pick up business as it deals with Chinese history: the invasion of China by Japanese forces. This will open semi-saturated as about 70% of theaters will show this. It could get lost in the shuffle with 6 other new releases this week but it is generating some buzz. Look for a weekend opening about $150,000 - $500,000. It won't be enough to challenge for the top spot but it will definitely take away some business from other films. The final semi-major release will be All About Love. This controversial movie held special screenings last week to generate more buzz in advance of the forthcoming release date. This movie is less mainstream than the others but will generate the more artsy folks to take a look at this. With special screenings already added in, this could generate anywhere from $150,000 - $350,000. Bright Star and Curse of the Deserted are the other two releases this week. These movies won't generate much. Curse of the Deserted looks to be the bigger one of the two and will gross around $5,000-25,000 while Bright Star (playing in only 1 theater) looks to get around $1,000-$15,000. Holdovers: Inception - No matter how you cut it, Inception will lose the #1 crown this week. The only question is by how much? Theater owners are being semi-generous. Some have given it Thursday night screenings while others have cut this completely. I am going to predict about a 50-60% drop. Not horrendous but it will effectively cut off its chances of reaching $7m. Cats & Dogs 2 - It will suffer a horrendous drop thanks to loss of screens and even theaters. A 60% drop is in store. Vampires Suck - Not only is this movie frontloaded, but it will lose many theaters this weekend. I am going to predict a 70-80% drop here. Toy Story 3 - Depending on how much it made last weekend, it will determine whether or not if Toy Story 3 can pass $11.5m. No one will be saved this week so expect a horrible drop of about 65-75%. Step Up 3D - It will be very close but with a fall of about 70-75%, it may just miss $2m.

Missing: The Stool Pigeon, Shanghai, Avatar That is pretty weak for The Expendables. Terrible for every holdover except Cats & Dogs 2. Cats & Dogs 2 may only drop -50% from last Thursday which would be quite good. Not good but expected for All About Love.

Re: HK 8/29 SUN: 80,000 protest against handling of bus crisis
80,000 people protest against Philippine government and police, demand justice An estimated 80,000 people took part in a rally held on Sunday to demand justice for the victims and vented their anger at how the Philippine government and police has handled the crisis. Thursday's Stool Pigeon number looks way off. Anyways, for now, it looks like Expendables will open with about $800,000, good enough to place in the top 10 for 2010 OW's, while Stool Pigeon will open with around $500,000, Inception with $275,000 and Step Up with $220,000.

Re: HK: 9/9 WKD Preview: 9 films hits theaters. 4 #1 contenders.
9 new films invade theaters this week and holdovers are already feeling the effects with theaters rolling out their schedules for Thursday. Every holdover will lose a massive amount of screens or showtimes this weekend.
The #1 contenders are:
Piranha 3D - Solid reviews and the most likely of the three III-rated films to succeed. Will battle it out with Street Dance 3D for #1. The III rating might hurt its chances of grabbing #1.
Street Dance 3D - Buoyed by the success of Step Up, it hopes to capitalize on the dance fever that is going around and grab most of the audience that came out for Step Up. This and Piranha are prime candidates for #1.
Frozen - Another suspense/thriller movie coming out this week. This probably would have been a major #1 contender had Piranha been released any other week but, it looks like it will have to settle for a top 5 placing. Piranha will steal away most of its audiences but one thing that is going for it is that it is rated IIB, which means teens can satisfy their thriller craving with this flick and it gives this movie a chance to claim #1.
Going The Distance - Those not interested in suspense thrillers will flock to this romance movie. It avoided the III rating which will help to generate major business from teen couples. This could turn out to be a surprise #1.
Holdovers will suffer. Weekend holds will plummet. As of right now, it looks like Inception will make around 7.2m while Toy Story 3 will miss the 11.5m milestone by about $100,000. Step Up is looking like it will drop about 80-90%. The Expendables is fading and won't survive this massacre. The Stool Pigeon may be the lucky winner and could avoid severe showtime cuts. It may also come out on top if all newcomers underperform. Avatar will definitely get cut as business has been poor. It'll survive in IMAX due to bristling business there. Last week's openers will not get any relief as only one opener made the top 5 in admissions.

What has Step Up 3D grossed overall? And how does it compare to Step Up 2 if you have that information.
I ask because some has mentioned how well Step Up 3D has done OS so far this year.

I ask because some has mentioned how well Step Up 3D has done OS so far this year. Let me post last week's chart. Weekend of August 26-29, 2010: 1 N The Expendables Golden Scene $622,860 - 36 - $17,302 $622,860 1 2 N The Stool Pigeon Lark $582,136 - 42 - $13,860 $582,136 1 3 1 Inception WB $264,989 -57.6% 42 -11 $6,309 $6,899,556 5 4 2 Step Up 3-D Golden Scene $220,587 -57.6% 30 -4 $7,353 $2,146,440 3 5 N Duk haan chau faan (All About Love) Newport $198,745 - 35 - $5,678 $198,745 1 6 3 Cats & Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore WB $153,060 -58.4% 34 - $4,502 $688,392 2 7 N Avatar: Special Edition Fox $134,178 - 11 - $12,198 $134,178 1 8 N Shanghai Cable $93,261 - 26 - $3,587 $93,261 1 9 4 Toy Story 3 Disney $82,343 -54.8% 22 -15 $3,743 $11,327,304 7 10 5 Despicable Me EDKO $55,601 -62.0% 17 -14 $3,271 $1,368,012 4 11 10 Kureyon Shin-chan: Chôjikû! It has already made the top 10 highest grossing movies of the year which is a HUGE surprise. Even without 3D prices, this movie still would have beaten Step Up 2 by a large margin. Comparison: Step Up - $313,659 - In 2006, BOM only tracked the top 10 films each week so this could have ended up with around $340,000. Step Up 2 - $1,051,045 October must be Japan movies month. Confessions, Bayside Shakedown 3 and Liar Game (after being pushed back 4 times) all come out. I have no data for the first 2 Bayside Shakedown movies but it'll be interesting to see how well all these movies do.

The Expendables had a pretty average 2nd week drop and 3rd weekend is showing signs of major collapse. More on that later. $1.3-1.4m is looking final. The Hole opened to decent results. It'll bank around $350,000-400,000. Inception had a good hold although next weekend will be another story. Half of the theaters are cutting this next weekend to make room for new releases. The total looks a bit off as well. $100,000 should be coming off of its total so it should stand at about $7.06m. $7.2-7.3m sounds about right. Step Up continues its amazing run. Already in the top 10 highest grossing movies of the year. Street Dance will open next weekend so it should be able to cross the $2.5m milestone before it gets crushed. All About Love actually had a solid hold considering previews were included in last week's weekend total. Total will be around $0.5m. Girl$ had a nice opening with a good PSA of almost $8,000. Unfortunately, it has little time left before it gets its screens cut so $200,000 seems like the most it will make. Avatar had a decent hold thanks to IMAX. It may claw to $500,000 if demand is still high enough in IMAX. Toy Story 3 continues its amazing run with a 32% drop. Even though its total is slightly inflated, it won't reach $11.5m. It will finish with $11.47m. The Chinese movie Frozen opened to weak response and only managed a $1,777 PSA. A total of around $85,000 should be its ending point. Opening in limited release, The Secret In Their Eyes opened to very big crowds thanks to the Oscar and rave reviews. It could even push past $70,000-80,000 which would be terrific for a foreign language release.

Not bad for Piranha but solid for StreetDance. StreetDance should overtake Piranha from now on as the target audience will watch it over the weekend rather than on the weekdays as schools are now in session. Going The Distance opened to ok results. Comparing its opening day to When In Rome, it is beating it by about 500 admissions. A total near or just above When In Rome will probably be its weekend total. The Stool Pigeon had a good hold. While a 66% drop may look horrendous, it's not bad considering how many screens the new openers took away from it. At least it's doing better than The Expendables... Speaking of which, I compared last Thursday's presale admissions for it with this Thursday's 5th place finisher (since it did not make the top 5) for presales (Frozen with 455 admissions) and Expendables fell by 92.2%. Drops for today will be inflated though due to school and new openers so the weekend drops should be much better.

This is quite shocking. Not only did StreetDance barely increase over the weekend, but Piranha bucked the trend of most horror/thriller films. Ok for The Stool Pigeon. Decent for Going The Distance. Weak for Frozen.

Re: HK: RE4/Wall Street/Chen Zhen/Devil open 9/22! Who will win?
Notes: - Advanced ticketing for Resident Evil 4, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, The Legend of Fist: Return of Chen Zhen and Devil are now available. Sneak peeks start September 22. Right now, it is looking like Resident Evil will come out on top, Wall Street in 2nd and Chen Zhen in 3rd. - No changes in IMAX. Avatar: Special Edition is still showing in both theaters but it is sharing the bigger IMAX screen with Inception. - New theater The ONE has just opened. It is the first theater that offers both vibrating and non-vibrating seats.

Re: HK: RE4/Wall Street/Chen Zhen/Devil open 9/22! Who will win?
Notes: - The theater in Kwai Fong has suspended all of their screens except for 1 for renovations. It will re-open in mid December. - Next Thursday is a holiday so business will be booming Wednesday night and Thursday. As I previously reported, Resident Evil 4, Wall Street, Chen Zhen and Devil are all being released early to take advantage of this.

Do you expect big numbers for RE4?

Corpse wrote: Do you expect big numbers for RE4? I do. For now, I'm expecting it to beat RE3's gross ($1.389m) to become the highest grossing film of the series (RE2 stands at about $943,000, RE - $827,000). I am, however, still waiting on how they will schedule this coming weekend first before I make any predictions for its opening weekend and total. Chen Zhen, Devil and Wall Street were originally scheduled to be released on Sept. 23 (Thursday) and Resident Evil the following week but the holiday has changed things. I don't know if these special screenings are for 1-2 days or if the sneak previews will continue on for the weekend or even for the whole week. Theaters have not released their Thursday schedules yet and most have not scheduled Wednesday either. I will post some theater schedules later on when they come out.

_______________________ The Borrower Arrietty has been scheduled for release on Christmas Day. This is a blow to all films released that week as it targets their main demographic which is children. Japanese films have a huge following here. Ponyo banked just over $3m ($3,029,041). Non-animated films like Okuribito, the Death Note movies, Yôgisha X no kenshin (Suspect X) have all made off with more than $1.5m. As it stands right now, Christmas is going to be huge with Harry Potter leading the way. Unfortunately, this does not bode well for Narnia. Narnia will be released on December 9th but is unlikely to move up a week or after January. I really hope it reconsiders in the event that the Christmas Weekend release schedule is final.

Early Thursday admission rankings: Judging based on a few select theaters (non-business areas), here's how I would rank the new openers so far: 1. Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen 2. Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D 3. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps 4. Devil Resident Evil's #s are all over the place. In some theaters, it is doing poorly while flourishing in others.

Business districts are another story. Wall Street is well out in front. Chen Zhen is in 2nd. Resident Evil is running 3rd which is somewhat surprising. Early Thursday rankings (business): 1. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps 2. Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen 3. Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D 4. Devil For the rankings, I only compared the showtimes after 3 PM for the 3 films.

The first official numbers of the weekend is here! Chen Zhen is really maximizing the holiday and is distancing itself from the other openers. Wall Street is having a strong holiday Thursday. No surprise that Resident Evil fell to 3rd place. It hasn't looked that great in presales in most theaters (although there are a few outliers). It would be a shock if it decreases from its opening day since Thursday is a holiday and sneaks started at 3 PM compared with 9 PM on Wednesday. It is looking like it will barely finish ahead of Wednesday's tally. Chen Zhen is looking at 30,000-40,000 admissions today and around 90,000-110,000 total for the weekend. Wall Street should be around 18,000-24,000 admissions and a weekend tally of about 70,000-85,000 admissions. Resident Evil hasn't played well and is decreasing in showtimes as the weekend goes along so a total of about 35,000-48,000 admissions sounds right. The good thing for Resident Evil is that it officially comes out next week so next week's drop shouldn't be too bad. It still has a chance of beating RE3. Devil, meanwhile, may just scrape by 20,000 admissions when all is said and done.

Frozen UA Films $40,412 2 11 $3,674 -64 $188,406 Piranha has done well for itself. It will finish with around $1.2 or $1.3m. Killers and Splice opened to underwhelming results. The Housemaid couldn't capitalize on its III rating and only opened with a slightly better PSA than Killers. Inception is still playing well but time is running out and it won't make $7.5m. $7.38m seems final. The Stool Pigeon is a HUGE success. It has already increased 33% over The Beast Stalker. StreetDance suffered from being British and for being virtually unknown. Terrible for Going the Distance. It won't even beat The Bounty Hunter (made just over $300,000). Really poor for Adventure of the King. Bad for Frozen. People are pretty much waiting for Resident Evil 4, Wall Street and Chen Zhen to open.

Re: HK 9/23 THU: Chen Zhen #1; WStreet, RE4 neck and neck for #2
Movies like Wall Street are not known for good business in Singapore and Malaysia. Not sure about HK but from what I have seen they don't do very good business in HK as well. Being a financial hub does not really mean that a movie will breakout even if it is HK and the movie's name is Wall Street. I mean it is in contention with Chen Zhen (though a bit far but not as much as I first expected it to be)
