I'd still take Federer's 2006.

3 Grand Slams, 1 Final
17 total tournaments. 12 Titles. 16 finals.
92-5. Only lost to two players (Nadal and Murray)

Nadal right now is 65-8, 8 titles. 10 Finals. 2 GS 1 GS SF and Olympic Gold. Even if he wins the US Open, it would depend on his performance in the indoor season in the fall to get an accurate picture of how his year stacks up with Federer's 06.

ETA: Edited Nadal's stats, I don't think the ATP Profile has updated todays match.

i agree Federer's 2006 is still the best season of the modern era imo. if nadal wins the U.S. Open, i'd compare his year with Federer last year possibly.

US Open starts tomorrow.

Nadal is the last match on Arthur Ashe stadium in the afternoon session, while Serbian number 2 Jelena Jankovic kicks off the night session.

Yeah, Ivanovic isn't having a great second half of 08. It's really been all downhill after the French. I miss the days of a dominant woman number one.

I miss the days of Steffi Graf, but that's a different issue entirely :)

So lets see what's happening with the seeds...

1 Rafael Nadal
2 Roger Federer
3 Novak Djokovic
4 David Ferrer vs.
5 Nikolay Davydenko
6 Andy Murray vs.
7 David Nalbandian
8 Andy Roddick
9 James Blake
10 Stanislas Wawrinka
11 Fernando Gonzalez
12 Richard Gasquet lost to Tommy Haas RND 1
13 Fernando Verdasco
14 Ivo Karlovic
15 Tommy Robredo
16 Gilles Simon
17 Juan Martin Del Potro
18 Nicolas Almagro
19 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
20 Nicolas Kiefer lost to Ivo Minar RND 1
22 Tomas Berdych lost to Sam Querrey RND 1

23 Igor Andreev
24 Paul-Henri Mathieu lost to Mardy Fish RND 2
25 Philipp Kohlschreiber lost to Viktor Troicki RND 2

26 Dmitry Tursunov
27 Feliciano Lopez lost to Jurgen Melzer RND 1
28 Radek Stepanek
29 Juan Monaco lost to Kei Nishikori RND 1
30 Marin Cilic
31 Andreas Seppi
32 Gael Monfils

Pretty good start for the top men's seeds really, no major upsets. And i have to admit, it's pretty nice to see Nadal at the top of that list :D

1 Ana Ivanovic lost to Julie Coin RND 2
2 Jelena Jankovic
3 Svetlana Kuznetsova
4 Serena Williams
5 Elena Dementieva
6 Dinara Safina
7 Venus Williams
8 Vera Zvonareva lost to Tatiana Perebiynis RND 2
9 Agnieszka Radwanska
10 Anna Chakvetadze lost to Ekaterina Makarova RND 1
11 Daniela Hantuchova lost to Anna-Lena Groenefeld RND 1

12 Marion Bartoli
13 Agnes Szavay lost to Tathiana Garbin RND 2
14 Victoria Azarenka
15 Patty Schnyder
16 Flavia Pennetta
17 Alize Cornet
18 Dominika Cibulkova
19 Nadia Petrova
20 Nicole Vaidisova lost to Severine Bremond RND 2
21 Caroline Wozniacki
22 Maria Kirilenko lost to Tamira Paszek RND 1
23 Lindsay Davenport
24 Shahar Peer lost to Na Li RND 1
25 Francesca Schiavone lost to Anne Keothavong RND 2
26 Anabel Medina Garrigues lost to Jie Zheng RND 2
27 Alona Bondarenko
28 Katarina Srebotnik
29 Sybille Bammer vs. Tatiana Perebiynis RND 3
30 Ai Sugiyama vs. Serena Williams [4] RND 3
31 Virginie Razzano lost to Timea Bacsinszky RND 1
32 Amelie Mauresmo vs. Julie Coin RND 3

A bit more of a culling on the women's side, what's going on with Ivanovic? can't take being number one?

I'm looking forward to seeing Dementieva vs Keothavong, as she's the first female brit to get to the third round since 1991. Also Jankovic vs Zheng should be a great match, i think Zheng stands a pretty good chance.

Jankovic v Zheng turned out to be a very entertaining match. Zheng had a huge nuber of chances in second set but just couldn't manage to take one, such a shame.

omg

I was looking at the end of this thread and suddenly drew a blank as to if either Venus or Serena has won a grand slam this year. That's so shameful.

I didn't even know Roger had fallen to #2 in the world apparently.

How about Roddick last night? Gulbis really had a shot at him. I'm just so sick of Roddick and his damn hat he has to wear every single freaking match. It's beyond annoying for me. I always want him to lose simply because of that.

I didn't learn until later that Blake had escaped past Young. Let's see if Blake can actually do something for once now.

Is this the first time Fish has done anything noteable at a major? Good for him I guess.

Querrey gave a pretty good showing against Nadal.

With Roddick still in too, it's been a pretty good event for the Americans.

Djokovic's fatigue could be an issue I think, he gets tomorrow off then plays 3 in 4 days if he gets to the final. These long matches won't help him.

Post Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '08
Davydenko lost, to unseeded Muller. Doesn't make much difference anyways, even in his prime he was too limited to challenge a big gun.

Roger's in a 5 setter, but up 4-1 at the moment.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the winner of the presumable Nadal/Murray match takes the tournament.

Dementieva made it to the semis on the women's side... oppurtunity's there to at least make the finals, I don't trust Jankovic in any big match. Elena seems to be pretty hot in all senses of the word since adjusting her serve, too.

Btw, here's the current outlook on the women's points list, updated before the tournament started:

1 Ana Ivanovic Serbia & Montenegro - 3612.0
2 Jelena Jankovic Serbia & Montenegro - 3515.0
3 Serena Williams USA - 3341.0
4 Svetlana Kuznetsova Russia - 3181.0
5 Maria Sharapova Russia - 3131.0
6 Elena Dementieva Russia -3070.0
7 Dinara Safina Russia - 3047.0
8 Venus Williams USA - 2586.0

It'll be even closer at the top after this tournament, Dementieva and Safina will move up, Ivanovic won't drop too much (lost in the 3rd round last year), Serena may move up, but I don't think she can get #1, both her and Jankovic lost in the semis last year and the difference between a win and a SF loss is 110 points, it's not enough. Sharapova lost in the 3rd round last year, she'll still be in sight. Kuznetsova will fall right out of the mix, though.

Roddick's looking pretty sharp. Would love to see him play Federer in the semis for nostalgic value... I miss those beatdowns, while the announcers try to make it seem like he has any shot at all. :tears:

I would think given their current form, Roddick would be a favourite to take it. I know that's what I'd think would happen.

I'd need a lot of convincing to ever pick Roddick over Fed. Their past meetings are just too gruesome. :ninja:

Thinking about it though, if he beats Djokovic, the announcers will be OUT OF CONTROL. :funny:
