 Re: September 10-12 Predictions
Virginity Hit is moved back two weeks, so it should no longer be showing this weekend.

Maybe they'll refund people for those tickets when they find out it's not playing .

 Re: September 10-12 Predictions
My theater is getting FLIPPED and they even have it in stadium seating. I think I may go see it. Gotta support the indies.
They're also getting ECLIPSE back.

Two straight weeks of all R-rated wide releases, no family films since Nancy McPhee Returns, which isn't doing much to begin with, and it will give the film an extra week before Legend of the Guardians. I know the post Labor Day weekend isn't ideal for family flicks, but it feels this weekend would fit Alpha and Omega better.
Despicable Me and Nanny McPhee should really benefit this weekend from the complete lack of competition.

 Re: September 10-12 Predictions
Summit must be trying to get Eclipse past 300M for marketing purposes. I seriously doubt they're trying to beat HP6. What's the point? It's just going to get destroyed by HP7.1 in a month and a half anyway.

Despicable and Nanny will suffer from post-LD drops though.

 Re: September 10-12 Predictions
I'm interested to see what percentage of RE's gross comes from 3D screens. It's obvious that 3D fatigue has set in and audiences are expecting more from the technology. Most of the folks I speak to walk out disappointed because the 3D doesn't "jump out" at you or seem like you can reach out and grab it. I think that's the direction films need to start going because simple "immersion" isn't enough to justify the premium.

 Re: September 10-12 Predictions
I expect 80+% of RE's gross to be 3D. While animated and family-skewing 3D have been hurting, live action 3D aimed at older demographics like Step Up and Piranha had ridiculous 81% and 95% respectively. The IMAX 3D #'s will help further skew RE's 3D % higher as well.

 Re: September 10-12 Predictions
I'd expect 80% as well. The Final Destination had 70% of its opening gross from 3D screens, and I expect the percentage of 3D screens for RE4 will be quite a bit higher.

 Re: September 10-12 Predictions
Yeah, it won't hurt that it has been advertised as filmed in James Cameron fusion camera system.
As far as attendance I figure if Apocalypse didn't kill off much audience then Extinction shouldn't have much affect on this one - may have helped bring a few back even. This one has a mini-Fast/Furious reunion theme and seems to promise to breathe some life back into the series so to speak.

 Re: September 10-12 Predictions
It's logical family movies are getting lower 3D percentage of their gross. It's harder for a family to buy expensive 3D tickets + popcorn, drinks etc. than for group of single guys, couples etc. It's different when you have to spend like $100 for your whole family, than $20 for a night out.

You make a great point here. Plus it's the single people and couples that generally have more disposable income.

 Re: September 10-12 Predictions
I don't know why but the IMAX screen at AMC Universal Citywalk is holding on to Avatar rather than playing Resident Evil this weekend. That's so stupid and very unfortunate for me because that cinema is the closest and one of the few "real" IMAX screens in southern California while the rest of AMC's are all fake IMAX.
Any other theaters nearby you are choosing to hold onto Avatar on their IMAX screen?
Edit: They actually have a valid reason for this, I now understand the reasoning from a very informative and well-written PM.

I'm very confused as to why Alpha and Omega didn't open this weekend.

Any other theaters nearby you are choosing to hold onto Avatar on their IMAX screen? Mine isn't, but I wouldn't blame them if they did. They could keep Avatar on 3D screens until this time next year and I bet it would still be making over a million per weekend.

How would it make a million per weekend when no one is seeing it already?
